Subsurface formations containing w ater may be divided vertically into several horizontal zones according to the relative proportion of the pore space w hich is occupied by w ater. Essentially，w e have a zone of saturation in w hich all pores are completely filled w ith w ater， and an overlying zone of aeration in w hich the pores contain both gases ( mainly air and w ater vapor) and w ater.Figure 3. 1 show s a schematic distribution of subsurface w ater in a homogeneous soil. Water ( e. g. ，from precipitation and / or irrigation ) infiltrates through the ground surface， moves dow nw ards，primarily under the influence of gravity，and accumulates，filling all the interstices of the rock formation，above some impervious bedrock. The saturated zone in Figure 3. 1 is bounded from above by a water table ( phreatic surface) . We shall see below that under different circumstances，the upper boundary can be an impervious one. The term groundw ater is used by groundw ater hydrologists to denote the w ater in the zone of saturation. Wells，springs， and effluent streams act as outlets of w ater from the zone of saturation. The phreatic surface is an imaginary surface at all points of w hich the pressure is atmospheric ( conveniently taken as p = 0) . In Figure 3. 1 it is revealed by the level at w hich w ater stands in a w ell just penetrating the aquifer. When the flow in the aquifer is essentially horizontal，the depth of penetration is immaterial. Actually saturation extends a certain distance above the w ater table，depending on the type of soil.Figure 3. 1 The schematic distribution of subsurface waterThe zone of aeration extends from the w ater table to the ground surface. It usually consists of three subzones: the soil w ater zone ( or belt of soil w ater) ，the intermediate zone ( or vadose w ater zone) ，and the capillary zone ( or capillary fringe) .The soil water zone is adjacent to the ground surface and extends dow nw ard through the root zone. Vegetation depends on w ater in this zone，as the roots require aeration as w ell as w ater. The moisture distribution in this zone is affected by conditions at the ground surface ( seasonal and diurnal fluctuations of precipitation，irrigation，air temperature，and humidity) ， and by the presence of a shallow w ater table. When the w ater table of the aquifer is deep，it does not affect the moisture distribution in this zone. Water in this zone moves dow nw ard during infiltration ( e. g. ，from precipitation，flooding of the ground surface or irrigation) ，and upw ard by evaporation and plant transpiration. Temporarily，during a short period of excessive infiltration，the soil in this zone may be almost completely saturated.After an extended period of gravity drainage w ithout additional supply of w ater at the soil surface，the amount of moisture remaining in the soil is called field capacity. Below field capacity，the soil contains capillary water in the form of continuous films around the soil particles and menisci betw een them，held by surface tension. Water in these films is moved by capillary action and is available to plants. Below some moisture content，called the hygroscopic coefficient ( maximum moisture w hich an initially dry soil w ill adsorb w hen brought in contact w ith an atmosphere of 50% relative humidity at 20℃ ) ，the w ater in the soil is called hygroscopic water. It also forms very thin films of moisture on the surface of soil particles，but the adhesive forces are very strong，so that this w ater is unavailable to plants.The intermediate zone extends from the low er edge of the soil w ater zone to the upper limit of the capillary zone. Its thickness depends on the depth of the w ater table below the ground surface; it does not exist w hen the w ater table is too high，in w hich case the capillary fringe may extend into the soil w ater zone，or even to the ground surface. Non-moving，or pellicular， w ater in the intermediate zone is held in place by hygroscopic and capillary forces. It is equivalent to the field capacity in the soil w ater zone. Temporarily，w ater moves dow nw ard through this zone as gravitational water.The capillary fringe extends from the w ater table up to the limit of capillary rise of w ater. Its thickness depends on the soil properties and on the homogeneity of the soil，mainly on the pore size distribution. The capillary rise ranges from practically nothing in coarse material，to as much as 2 m to 3 m and more in fine materials ( e. g. ，clay) . Within the capillary fringe there is a gradual decrease in moisture content w ith height above the w ater table. Just above the w ater table，the pores are practically saturated. Moving higher，only the smaller connected pores contain w ater. Still higher，only the smallest connected pores are filled w ith w ater. Hence，the upper limit of the capillary fringe has an irregular shape. For practical purposes，some average smooth surface is taken as the upper limit of the capillary fringe，such that below it the soil is assumed practically saturated ( say ＞ 75% ) .In the capillary fringe，the pressure is less than atmospheric and a vertical as w ell as horizontal flow of w ater may take place. When the saturated zone below the w ater table is much thicker than the capillary fringe，the flow in the latter is often neglected as far as groundw ater flow is concerned. In drainage problems，the flow in the unsaturated zones may be of primary importance.Obviously，numerous complications are introduced into the schematic moisture distribution described here by the great variability in pore sizes， the presence of layers of different permeability，and by the temporary movement of infiltrating w ater.
