　　能够长期保持其磁性的磁体称永久磁体。如天然的磁石（磁铁矿）和人造磁体（铝镍钴合金）等。磁体中除永久磁体外，也有需通电才有磁性的电磁体。永磁体也叫硬磁体，不易失磁，也不易被磁化。　　钢或其他材料能成为永磁体，就是因为它们经过恰当地处理、加工后，内部存在的不均匀性处于最佳状态，矫顽力最大。铁的晶体结构、内应力等不均匀性很小，矫顽力自然很小，使它磁化或去磁都不需要很强的磁场，因此，它就不能变成永磁体。通常把磁化和去磁都很容易的材料，称为“软”磁性材料。“软”磁性材料不能作永磁体，铁就属于这种材料　　就像你平时见到的那种带有磁性钢棒.永磁体是在外加磁场去掉后，仍能保留一定剩余磁化强度的物体。要使这样的物体剩余磁化强度为零，磁性完全消除，必须加反向磁场。使铁磁质完全退磁所需要的反向磁场的大小，叫铁磁质的矫顽力。钢与铁都是铁磁质，但它们的矫顽力不同，钢具有较大的矫顽力，而铁的矫顽力较小。这是因为在炼钢过程中，在铁中加了碳、钨、铬等元素，炼成了碳钢、钨钢、铬钢等。碳、钨、铬等元素的加入，使钢在常温条件下，内部存在各种不均匀性，如晶体结构的不均匀、内应力的不均匀、磁性强弱的不均匀等。这些物理性质的不均匀，都使钢的矫顽力增加。而且在一定范围内不均匀程度愈大，矫顽力愈大。但这些不均匀性并不是钢在任何情形下都具有的或已达到的最好状态，为使钢的内部不均匀性达到最佳状态，必须要进行恰当的热处理或机械加工。例如，碳钢在熔炼状态下，磁性和普通铁差不多；它从高温淬炼后，不均匀才迅速增长，才能成为永磁材料。若把钢从高温度慢慢冷却下来，或把已淬炼的钢在六、七百摄氏度熔炼一下，其内部原子有充分时间排列成一种稳定的结构，各种不均匀性减小，于是矫顽力就随之减小，它就不再成为永磁材料了。
