GLOCK17是最早也是最基本的型号，由于9mm Para口径是北约成员国的军用手枪标准口径，而在其他非北约国家中也是应用很广的军用手枪口径，所以GLOCK17的应用范围最广、产量最大．20世纪80年代初，奥地利陆军寻求一支新手枪以取代服役了多年的德国华尔特P38自动手枪，他们首先试验了著名的奥地利斯太尔(Steyr)公司在70年代开发的斯太尔GB手枪，但试验的结果并不理想。于是，订单落到了GLOCK公司手上。 Glock17手枪作为一家还没有名气的年轻的枪械制造公司，GLOCK公司十分珍惜这次难得的机会。他们首先邀请了奥地利军方人士及北约组织的高级将领，听取他们的意见，然后组织研究人员将这些意见整理出一个清晰的框架要求，作为开发新手枪的研制起点，并要求外形、结构要全新设计，采用新材料和新的工业技术制造。在1983年，GLOCK公司的新手枪问世。并开始接受奥地利陆军的各种严格的试验，试验结果十分满意，于是奥地利陆军正式采用，并命名为M80。而这支新手枪的商业名称就是GLOCK17，发射北约口径的9×19mm Para手枪弹。GLOCK17的外形非常简洁，简洁到看来起方头方脑，完全不像传统的手枪外形设计那样讲究曲线的运用。实际上这样的设计十分符合实战应用，便于随身携带和使用。手枪握把与枪管轴线的夹角比任何手枪都要大，这个角度是根据人体手臂自然抬起的瞄准姿势与身体的角度而定的，因此几乎不用瞄准便可举枪射击，这样的设计在突然遭遇的近战中瞄准反应速度特别快而且准。GLOCK17的扳机式保险看起来好像一些双管猎枪所用的双扳机，但前面突出的小扳机是保险杆。只要手指扣动扳机时就打开了保险，这样设计的好处不但提高了安全性(对于那些忘记关上保险的人而言)，而且也提高的反应的速度，当需要发射时，不需要事先打开保险。虽然HK P7手枪以握把保险来代替传统保险，是最早尝试改变传统手枪保险方式的，但这种保险方式没有得到推广。而现在很多枪械制造商都开始采用扳机保险装置，尽管由于专利权的问题，这些设计和GLOCK手枪的扳机保险在结构上有分别，但其设计思想和基本原理却是源自GLOCK17的。GLOCK17经受了奥地利陆军的严格试验，包括冰冻、风沙、浸泡海水、烂泥等环境，据说在经过10吨重军用卡车碾压过后，它的工程塑料部件都没有损坏，可以继续射击。有人说在一些枪展上看到GLOCK摊位上的人把手枪使劲扔到地上来吸引参观者的注意，并同时展示GLOCK手枪坚固的塑料部件．GLOCK17还能在水中射击，虽然不是专用的水下手枪，但一些蛙人作战部队都会装备这支手枪以便应急使用。Glock手枪系列中的第一支型号为什么编号是“17”呢？到目前我听过三种解释。第一种解释是因为这是Glock公司生产的第17种产品。相信这种讲法的人极少，因为没人能列出以前的16种产品为证。第二种解释是广为流传的，因为这支手枪的弹匣容量是17发，而当时流行的双排手枪弹匣是15发(这个流行的定义其实是以流行的意大利伯莱达92F为基准的)，所以就决定编号为17了。第三种解释是我比较相信的说法，因为Glock公司的人对外界宣称：他们以公司的门牌号码“17号”来命名新枪，以庆祝和纪念新枪的诞生。对于弹匣容量是17发，我认为只是一个巧合：Glock17的弹匣长度和其他15发容量的弹匣长度差不多，但Glock17所采用的众多新技术中的其中一项名为“扁钢丝绕制弹簧”，这种弹簧的剖面是扁的而不是传统的圆形，所以在保持相同弹力的情况下可以减少弹簧压缩时的长度，所以当双排弹匣里的弹簧压缩时便可以多容纳两发弹。除了17发的弹匣外，GLOCK17还可以使用19发弹匣和GLOCK18所用的33发弹匣。这支GLOCK装有LMS2000激光瞄准器，是专为GLOCK17研制的。扳机护圈前方的突出物是激光器，握把后的红色部件是激光瞄准器的按钮开关，电池则在握把内的弹匣后方。枪管上开孔的手枪不是Glock17C，而是美国一家名为ARO-TEK的公司改装的。
