And I am just so glad that all could join us today. And I want to thank Wakefield for being such an outstanding host. Give yourselves a big round of applause. (Applause.)　　I know that for many of you, today is the first day of school. And for those of you in kindergarten, or starting middle or high school, it"s your first day in a new school, so it"s understandable if you"re a little nervous. I imagine there are some seniors out there who are feeling pretty good right now -- (applause) -- with just one more year to go. And no matter what grade you"re in, some of you are probably wishing it were still summer and you could"ve stayed in bed just a little bit longer this morning.　　I know that feeling. When I was young, my family lived overseas. I lived in Indonesia for a few years. And my mother, she didn"t have the money to send me where all the American kids went to school, but she thought it was important for me to keep up with an American education. So she decided to teach me extra lessons herself, Monday through Friday. But because she had to go to work, the only time she could do it was at 4:30 in the morning.　　Now, as you might imagine, I wasn"t too happy about getting up that early. And a lot of times, I"d fall asleep right there at the kitchen table. But whenever I"d complain, my mother would just give me one of those looks and she"d say, "This is no picnic for me either, buster." (Laughter.)　　So I know that some of you are still adjusting to being back at school. But I"m here today because I have something important to discuss with you. I"m here because I want to talk with you about your education and what"s expected of all of you in this new school year.　　Now, I"ve given a lot of speeches about education. And I"ve talked about responsibility a lot.　　I"ve talked about teachers" responsibility for inspiring students and pushing you to learn.　　I"ve talked about your parents" responsibility for making sure you stay on track, and you get your homework done, and don"t spend every waking hour in front of the TV or with the Xbox.　　I"ve talked a lot about your government"s responsibility for setting high standards, and supporting teachers and principals, and turning around schools that aren"t working, where students aren"t getting the opportunities that they deserve.　　But at the end of the day, we can have the most dedicated teachers, the most supportive parents, the best schools in the world -- and none of it will make a difference, none of it will matter unless all of you fulfill your responsibilities, unless you show up to those schools, unless you pay attention to those teachers, unless you listen to your parents and grandparents and other adults and put in the hard work it takes to succeed. That"s what I want to focus on today: the responsibility each of you has for your education.　　I want to start with the responsibility you have to yourself. Every single one of you has something that you"re good at. Every single one of you has something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is. That"s the opportunity an education can provide.　　Maybe you could be a great writer -- maybe even good enough to write a book or articles in a newspaper -- but you might not know it until you write that English paper -- that English class paper that"s assigned to you. Maybe you could be an innovator or an inventor -- maybe even good enough to come up with the next iPhone or the new medicine or vaccine -- but you might not know it until you do your project for your science class. Maybe you could be a mayor or a senator or a Supreme Court justice -- but you might not know that until you join student government or the debate team.　　And no matter what you want to do with your life, I guarantee that you"ll need an education to do it. You want to be a doctor, or a teacher, or a police officer? You want to be a nurse or an architect, a lawyer or a member of our military? You"re going to need a good education for every single one of those careers. You cannot drop out of school and just drop into a good job. You"ve got to train for it and work for it and learn for it.　　And this isn"t just important for your own life and your own future. What you make of your education will decide nothing less than the future of this country. The future of America depends on you. What you"re learning in school today will determine whether we as a nation can meet our greatest challenges in the future.　　You"ll need the knowledge and problem-solving skills you learn in science and math to cure diseases like cancer and AIDS, and to develop new energy technologies and protect our environment. You"ll need the insights and critical-thinking skills you gain in history and social studies to fight poverty and homelessness, crime and discrimination, and make our nation more fair and more free. You"ll need the creativity and ingenuity you develop in all your classes to build new companies that will create new jobs and boost our economy.　　We need every single one of you to develop your talents and your skills and your intellect so you can help us old folks solve our most difficult problems. If you don"t do that -- if you quit on school -- you"re not just quitting on yourself, you"re quitting on your country.　　Now, I know it"s not always easy to do well in school. I know a lot of you have challenges in your lives right now that can make it hard to focus on your schoolwork.　　I get it. I know what it"s like. My father left my family when I was two years old, and I was raised by a single mom who had to work and who struggled at times to pay the bills and wasn"t always able to give us the things that other kids had. There were times when I missed having a father in my life. There were times when I was lonely and I felt like I didn"t fit in.　　So I wasn"t always as focused as I should have been on school, and I did some things I"m not proud of, and I got in more trouble than I should have. And my life could have easily taken a turn for the worse.　　But I was -- I was lucky. I got a lot of second chances, and I had the opportunity to go to college and law school and follow my dreams. My wife, our First Lady Michelle Obama, she has a similar story. Neither of her parents had gone to college, and they didn"t have a lot of money. But they worked hard, and she worked hard, so that she could go to the best schools in this country.　　Some of you might not have those advantages. Maybe you don"t have adults in your life who give you the support that you need. Maybe someone in your family has lost their job and there"s not enough money to go around. Maybe you live in a neighborhood where you don"t feel safe, or have friends who are pressuring you to do things you know aren"t right.　　But at the end of the day, the circumstances of your life -- what you look like, where you come from, how much money you have, what you"ve got going on at home -- none of that is an excuse for neglecting your homework or having a bad attitude in school. First Daughter is a second helping of a twice-filmed (this year!) fairy tale about the romantic rigors confronting an American president"s daughter. You"ve seen it all before-better and recently-as Chasing Liberty. Liberty was the Secret Service code name for Mandy Moore"s character in that film. Katie Holmes operates in this one as Lucky Charm. There are other plot differences-well, one, anyway. Whereas Moore had the happy advantage of scenic globe-hopping, Holmes focuses on her freshman year in a California college. Both fall for the first attractive young man who hovers over them a few seconds, never suspecting that he"s a Secret Service agent in Papa"s employ hired to protect her. The horror! The horror! If you take this practical necessity as betrayal and can imagine being hurt by it, then you are probably too young to vote-or too pampered to be bothered. Marc Blucas (View From the Top) is the collegiately camouflaged Galahad in question and, with his quiet-strength intensity, steals the picture from his time-hogging leading lady (as did, incidentally, Matthew Goode from Moore before him-both sterling examples of acting with economy). They create out of cardboard characters to care about. First Daughter marks the screenwriting debut of actor Jerry O"Connell, who started writing it in 1999 with the idea of playing the Secret Service Samaritan himself, but, once the ball got rolling, he opted to stay on board to executive-produce. Jessica Bendinger and Kate Kondell, who penned Bring It On and Legally Blonde 2, did the script follow-through. Another actor, Forest Whitaker, took up the directorial reins-as he"s prone to do these days (Waiting to Exhale, Hope Floats). The most notable thing about his direction-and this becomes an annoyance-is that he begins a scene with actors reacting to the words of the preceding scene. It"s editing-made-easy, but it irritates. The most unusual aspect of First Daughter is that it elects to put Beetlejuice in the White House-Michael Keaton, who, truth to tell, is too short for that gesture. (Almost all the women tower over him.) Where Keaton truly falls short is, simply, in connecting with the character. Anyone who has seen him in, say, Clean and Sober knows he has talent to spare. Here, he seems to be walking through the part as if protesting the shallowness of the scripting. "That whole China thing was real good," he is told by one particular constituent, who plummets what little political depth that there is in the film. Actually, the line is uttered by a cloyingly politically correct character-Holmes" African-American roommate and sidekick. R&B singer Amerie, as lacking in acting skills as she is a last name, plays the part with a crowd-displeasing chip on her shoulder. As the first lady, the excellent Margaret Colin exudes her preconditioned charm and poise (she played Jackie O on Broadway in 1998 and won a Theatre World Award for it). 1.莱布尼茨（1646-1716） 德国哲学家、数学家、自然科学家。 莱布尼茨生于莱比锡，卒于汉诺威。他自幼丧父，但作为莱比锡大学伦理学教授的父亲，给他留下了丰富的藏书，他的母亲很有学识和远见，从小送他进莱比锡最好的学校学习，使他自幼受到良好的家庭及学校教育。他从小就学习用多种语言表达思想，并表现出超常的哲学天赋。1661年入莱比锡大学学习法律，又曾到耶拿大学学习几何，接触了伽利略、培根、霍布斯、笛卡儿等人的科学和哲学思想。1666年他在纽伦堡阿尔特多夫大学取得法学博士学位。莱布尼茨博览群书，他的研究领域和研究成果遍及数学，逻辑学，物理学，地质学，哲学等，在化学，生物学，气象学，心理学等领域也做了重要的工作。莱布尼茨善于吸收别人的思想，他善于用访问和通信方式与人们讨论问题，一生中曾与千余人有过书信交往，留下了一万五千多封信件。与他通信的有各种各样的人士，既有科学界、哲学界的知名学者，也有各国的王侯皇妃，距离远至中国。内容涉及历史学、哲学、语言学、数学、逻辑学、化学、生物学、物理学、工程技术等等。这些信件记载着他的思想、见解和种研究成果。他的许多著作生前未发表，大量的手稿和书信现在还存放在汉诺威图书馆中。法国科学院准备在20世纪末出版《莱布尼茨全集》。 2.笛卡儿（1596-1650） 法国哲学家、数学家、物理学家、生理学家、解析几何学奠基人之一。笛卡儿出生于法国，父亲是法国一个地方法院的评议员，相当于现在的律师和法官。一岁时母亲去世，给笛卡儿留下了一笔遗产，为日后他从事自己喜爱的工作提供了可靠的经济保障。8岁时他进入一所耶稣会学校，在校学习8年，接受了传统的文化教育，读了古典文学、历史、神学、哲学、法学、医学、数学及其它自然科学。笛卡儿后来回忆说，这所学校是“欧洲最著名的学校之一”。1612年到巴黎的普瓦捷大学攻读法学，4年后获博士学位。1618年从军。1625年返巴黎。1628年，他从巴黎移居荷兰，开始了长达20年的潜心研究和写作生涯，先后发表了许多在数学和哲学上有重大影响的论着。1649年冬，因患肺炎逝世。笛卡儿是欧洲近代哲学的创始人之一。黑格尔称他为“现代哲学之父”，恩格斯称他为“辩证法的卓越代表”。同时笛卡儿又是一勇于探索的科学家，在物理学、生理学等领域都有值得称道的创见，特别是在数学上他创立了解析几何，从而打开了近代数学的大门，在科学史上具有划时代的意义。 3.狄德罗( Denis Diderot，1713-1784) 法国杰出的唯物主义哲学家、无神论者。出生于朗格勒手工业者家庭。早年曾学神学和法律。1746年发表具有反宗教倾向的《哲学思想录》，被政府当局下令焚毁。1749年发表《供明眼人参考的谈盲人的信》，触怒教会而被捕入狱三个月。出狱后着手主持编写《百科全书》，用了近30年时间，完成这部科学巨著，从而成为百科全书派的领袖。他肯定物质是唯一的实体，物质之外不存在超自然的精神实体。提出物质具有“感受性”，说明人的思维是物质长期发展的产物。认为万物由物质元素构成，元素数日无穷，性质相异，由此组成各种不同事物。肯定运动是物质固有的属性，物质处于永恒的运动之中，静止只是相对的，“移动”和“激动”是物质运动的两种基本形式。提出发展进化观点，认为自然现象之间没有绝对不可逾越的界限。在认识论上，旨定自然界是认识的唯一对象，认识起源于感觉经验。主张把感觉和思维结合起来，认识应当“从感觉回到思考，又从思考回到感觉”，但否认抽象的作用。提出认识的三种主要方法：观察、思考和实验。认为宗教是愚昧无知的产物，宣称“上帝是没有的；上帝创造世界是一种妄想”。主要著作还有《对白然的解释》、《达朗贝尔和狄德罗的淡话》、《关于物质和运动的哲学原理》、《拉摩的侄儿》等。 4.苏格拉底 苏格拉底出生于雅典一个普通公民的家庭；据说他父亲是石匠，母亲是助产婆。他早年继承父业，从事雕刻石像的工作，后来研究哲学。他在雅典和当时的许多智者辩论哲学问题，主要是关于伦理道德以及教育政治方面的问题。当时有人将他看作是智者，但他自认为和智者不同。智者是以各种虚假的知识教授青年，而他所要寻求的则是真正的知识。他被认为是当时最有智能的人。作为公民，他曾三次参军作战，在战争中表现得顽强勇敢。他曾在雅典公民大会中担任过陪审官，在任上他不顾众人的反对，否决过对6位将军的不正义的判决。30僭主复辟时，他曾拒绝和他们合作。在雅典恢复奴隶主民主制后，苏格拉底被控，以藐视传统宗教、引进新神、败坏青年和反对民主等罪名被判处死刑。他拒绝了朋友和学生要他乞求赦免和外出逃亡的建议，饮鸩而死。苏格拉底本人没有写过什么著作。他的行为和学说，主要是通过他的学生柏拉图和克塞诺芬尼著作中的记载流传下来。在柏拉图的对话中，《申辩篇》、《克里多篇》和《斐多篇》直接叙述了苏格拉底被审判时的自辩以至服毒前的谈话；他的其它早、中期的对话，也都以苏格拉底作为主要对话者，阐述各种哲学思想。 5.霍尔巴赫 (Paul Henri Dietrich baron d"Holbach，1723-1789)法国杰出的唯物主义哲学家、无神论者。出生于德国巴伐利亚一个商人家庭。幼年应伯父邀请，随同父亲移居巴黎。曾就学于荷兰莱顿大学，毕业后回巴黎取得法国国籍。不久即结识狄德罗等人，成为《百科全书》主要撰稿人之一。最大成就是把18世纪法国唯物主义世界观加以系统化。认为自然是物质和运动的总汇，物质是以任何一种方式刺激我们感官的东西，具有质的多样性。肯定运动是物质固有的本质属性，从不同角度对运动形式作了分类，但最终又把运动归结为机械运动。强调一切事物都处于必然的因果联系之中，但把因果性和必然性等同起来，否认偶然性的客观存在。认为人是自然界的产物，受自然必然性的制约；人的灵魂是肉体的一部分，与肉体同生共死。坚持唯物主义反映论，认为感觉是认识的唯一来源，它是客观事物作用于感官的结果。否认上帝的存在，指出宗教是“神圣的瘟疫”，宗教起源于人们的恐惧和无知以及神学家的欺骗，提出消灭宗教的唯一途径，就是宣传无神论，教育人民，启发人的理性。主要著作有：《揭穿了的基督教》、《神圣的瘟疫》、《自然的体系》、《健全的思想》、《社会的体系》等。 6.黑格尔（1770年一1831年） 德国哲学家，德国古典哲学的集大成者。早年在图宾根大学学习，曾经向往法国资产阶级革命，但后来畏惧雅各宾派专政，并与普鲁士专制王朝妥协。从1801年起，先后在耶拿大学、纽伦堡中学，海得尔堡大学和柏林大学任教，1830年升为柏林大学校长。黑格尔的哲学反映了当时德国资产阶级既想革命而又怯懦的阶级特性。他的哲学体系是保守的，而其辩证方法本质上是革命的。恩格斯指出：黑格尔哲学的“真实意义和革命性质，正是在于它永远结束了以为人的思维和行动的一切结果具有最终性质的看法。”黑格尔把个人意识的阶段、社会意识的阶段以及观念在宗教、艺术和哲学的形式之下最终达到其自我认识的最高阶段都列入第三阶段。他宣布哲学是“绝对知识”，并认定自己的哲学就是观念自己发展的最后阶段。这就是黑格尔的唯心主义哲学体系。黑格尔哲学中最有价值的是他的辩证方法，但是，黑格尔哲学的唯心主义体系窒息了他辩证法的革命精神。马克思和恩格斯在革命实践的基础上，批判地吸收了黑格尔哲学中辩证法的“合理内核”，摈弃它的唯心主义外壳，加以革命的改造，创立了唯物辩证法。黑格尔哲学是马克思主义哲学的理论来源之一。黑格尔的主要著作有：《法哲学原理》、《历史哲学讲演录》、《美学讲演录》、《宗教哲学讲演录》、《哲学史讲演录》、《精神现象学》、《逻辑学》、《哲学全书》、《小逻辑》、《自然哲学》等。 7.恩格斯(Friedrich Engels，1820．11．28-1895．8．5)马克思主义创始人之一，唯物主义哲学家，全世界无产阶级的伟大导师和领袖，马克思的亲密战友。生于普鲁士莱茵省巴门市（现为乌培塔尔市），父亲是纺织厂的厂主。1837年中学没有毕业就被父亲所迫去经商。1841年去柏林服兵役期间经常到柏林大学听课，参加了青年黑格尔小组。1844年2月发表《政治经济学批判大纲》，从无产阶级立场出发，用社会主义观点对资本主义经济制度进行了批判。1844年8月底，会见了马克思，结成终生为无产阶级解放事业奋斗的亲密战友。同年合作了《神圣家族》，批判了青年黑格尔派的唯心主义哲学，阐明了人民群众的历史作用。1845年3月写成《英国工人阶级状况》一书，揭示了资本主义的内在矛盾，第一次指明了无产阶级的历史地位和作用。1845年移居布鲁塞尔，与马克思合着《德意志意识形态》，阐述了历史唯物主义的基本原理，第一次提出了无产阶级夺取政权的历史任务。1847年同马克思一起加入共产主义者同盟，先后为同盟起草了纲领草案《共产主义信条草案》和《共产主义原理》，并和马克思合写了同盟的正式纲领《共产党宣言》，创立了马克思主义。1877—1878年写了《反杜林论》，对大肆攻击马克思主义的杜林进行了全面的批判，第一次系统地阐述了马克思主义的三个组成部分。1883年马克思逝世后，担负起整理和出版马克思未完成的《资本沦》第二、第三卷等文献的工作，继续领导国际工人运动。1888年写了《路德维希·费尔巴哈和德国古典哲学的终结》，揭示了马克思主义与黑格尔和费尔巴哈哲学的关系，详尽地阐释了辩证唯物主义和历史唯物主义的基本原理。1889年亲自参加领导第二国际的建立，指导它的活动，并同形形色色机会主义进行斗争。1895年8月5日在伦敦病逝。 8.列宁（1870.4.22－1924.1.21）马克思和恩格斯事业和学说的继承者，全世界无产阶级和劳动人民的伟大导师和领袖，也是唯物主义哲学家。原名乌里扬诺大，生于伏尔加河畔辛比尔斯克（今乌里扬诺大斯克）。1887年进入喀山大学攻读法律，因参加革命活动曾被捕。1893年秋移居彼得堡。1894年写《什么是“人民之友”以及他们如何攻击社会民主主义者?》，批判民粹派，阐述了历史唯物主义基本原理。1900年12月在德国莱比锡创办了《火星报》，从思想上和组织上为建党作准备。1904年写成了《进一步，退两步》，提出无产阶级政党是按民主集中制原则建立起来的统一组织。1905年俄国第一次资产阶级民主革命爆发后，于7月写成《社会民主党在民主革命中的两种策略》，指出了将资产阶级民主革命进行到底，并把它转变为社会主义革命的道路。同年11月回国直接领导革命斗争。1908年写成《唯物主义和经验批判主义》，批判了唯心主义，发展了辩证唯物主义的认识论，捍卫了哲学的党性原则。1908-1912年，致力于总结俄国第一次革命的经验，反对取消派和召回派，并同第二国际机会主义首领进行了针锋相对的斗争。1915年8月写的《论欧洲联邦口号》第一次得出社会主义可能首先在少数甚至单独一个资本主义国家取得胜利的结论。 9.马克思（Karl Marx，1818．5．5- 1883．3．14）马克思主义的创始人，唯物主义哲学家，全世界无产阶级的伟大导师和领袖。生于普鲁士莱茵省特里尔城的一个犹太籍律师家庭。1835—1841年先后在波恩大学和柏林大学学习。1842年4月起为《莱茵报》撰稿，同年10月被聘为该报主编。1843年10月迁居巴黎，同德国、法国秘密工人团体建立联系。1844年初创办《德法年鉴》，发表了《黑格尔法哲学批判导言》，《论犹太人问题》等文章，第一次指出无产阶级是唯一能消灭剥削制度的阶级，工人运动必须与科学的世界观相结合。1844年与恩格斯合写了《神圣家族》，批判了青年黑格尔派的唯心主义哲学，阐明了人民群众是历史创造者这一唯物主义基本原理。1845年迁居比利时首都布鲁塞尔，在这里写了《关于费尔巴哈的提纲》，这个提纲是包含着新世界观的天才萌芽的第一个文件。1845—1846年与恩格斯合写了《德意志意识形态》，论述了历史唯物主义的基本原理，指明了资本主义的灭亡和共产主义的胜利是历史发展的必然结果，第一次提出了无产阶级夺取政权的历史任务
