I went to a group activity, “Sensitivity Sunday”, which was to make us more aware of the proble.

小题1:去掉were或加which/that小题2:加a小题3:去掉on小题4:as--like小题5:other--others小题6:is--was小题7:awkwardly--awkward小题8:with—because/as 或去掉were小题9:how--where小题10:expression--impression 试题分析:文章讲述了我参加了一个社会活动,在某个周日,自己坐上轮椅去体验一下残疾人的生活是多么的困难,从而更加理解他们,帮助他们。小题1:去掉were或加which /that 非谓语动词的用法。 小题8:with—because/as 或去掉were 连词的用法或with复合结构。 故应表原因将with改为because/as.

Jack tossed the papers on my desk—his eyebrows knit into a straight line as he glared at me. "What"s wrong?" I asked. He jabbed a finger at the proposal. "Next time you want to change anything, ask me first," he said, turning on his heels and leaving me stewing in anger. How dare he treat me like that, I thought. I had changed one long sentence, and corrected grammar, something I thought I was paid to do. It"s not that I hadn"t been warned. Other women who had worked my job before me called Jack names I couldn"t repeat. One coworker took me aside the first day. "He"s personally responsible for two different secretaries leaving the firm," she whispered. As the weeks went by, I grew to despise Jack. His actions made me question much that I believed in, such as turning the other cheek and loving your enemies. Jack quickly slapped a verbal insult on any cheek turned his way. I prayed about the situation, but to be honest, I wanted to put Jack in his place, not love him. One day another of his episodes left me in tears. I stormed into his office, prepared to lose my job if needed, but not before I let the man know how I felt. I opened the door and Jack glanced up. “What?” he asked abruptly. Suddenly I knew what I had to do. After all, he deserved it. I sat across from him and said calmly, “Jack, the way you"ve been treating me is wrong. I"ve never had anyone speak to me that way. As a professional, it"s wrong, and I can"t allow it to continue.” Jack snickered nervously and leaned back in his chair. I closed my eyes briefly. God help me, I prayed. “I want to make you a promise. I will be a friend,” I said. “I will treat you as you deserve to be treated, with respect and kindness. You deserve that. Everybody does.” I slipped out of the chair and closed the door behind me. Jack avoided me the rest of the week. Proposals, specs, and letters appeared on my desk while I was at lunch, and my corrected versions were not seen again. I brought cookies to the office one day and left a batch on his desk. Another day I left a note. “Hope your day is going great,” it read. Over the next few weeks, Jack reappeared. He was reserved, but there were no other episodes. Coworkers cornered me in the break room. “Guess you got to Jack,” they said. “You must have told him off good.” I shook my head. “Jack and I are becoming friends,” I said in faith. I refused to talk about him. Every time I saw Jack in the hall, I smiled at him. After all, that"s what friends do. One year after our "talk," I discovered I had breast cancer. I was thirty-two, the mother of three beautiful young children, and scared. The cancer had metastasized to my lymph nodes and the statistics were not great for long-term survival. After my surgery, friends and loved ones visited and tried to find the right words. No one knew what to say, and many said the wrong things. Others wept, and I tried to encourage them. I clung to hope myself. One day, Jack stood awkwardly in the doorway of my small, darkened hospital room. I waved him in with a smile. He walked over to my bed and without a word placed a bundle beside me. Inside the package lay several bulbs. "Tulips," he said. I grinned, not understanding. He shuffled his feet, then cleared his throat. "If you plant them when you get home, they"ll come up next spring. I just wanted you to know that I think you"ll be there to see them when they come up." Tears clouded my eyes and I reached out my hand. "Thank you," I whispered. Jack grasped my hand and gruffly replied, "You"re welcome. You can"t see it now, but next spring you"ll see the colors I picked out for you. I think you"ll like them." He turned and left without another word. For ten years, I have watched those red-and-white striped tulips push their way through the soil every spring. In a moment when I prayed for just the right word, a man with very few words said all the right things. After all, that"s what friends do.

Fish and chips has always been a favourite dish in Britain, but as the oceans have been overfished, fish has become more and more expensive. So it com, es as a surprise to learn that giant fish are terrifying the divers on North Sea oil rigs. Oil rigs have to be repaired frequently and divers, who often have to work in darkness a hundred feet under water, have been frightened out of their wits by giant fish bumping into them as they work. Now they have had special cages made to protect them from these monsters. The fish are not sharks or killer whales, but favourite eating varieties like cod and skate which grow to unnatural sizes, sometimes as much as twelve feet in length. Three factors have caused these fish to grow so large: the warm water round the hot oil pipes under the sea; the plentiful supply of food thrown overboard by the crews on the rigs; the total absence of fishing boats around the oil rigs. As a result, the fish just eat and eat and grow and grow in the lovely warm water. Who eats who? People will do anything to see a free show -- even if it is a bad one. When the news got round that a comedy show would be presented at our local cinema by the P. and U. Bird Seed Company, we all rushed to see it. We had to queue for hours to get in and there must have been several hundred people present just before the show began. Unfortunately, the show was one of the dullest we have ever seen. Those who failed to get in need not have felt disappointed, as many of the artistes who should have appeared did not come. The only funny things we heard that evening came from the advertiser at the beginning of the programme. He was obviously very nervous and for some minutes stood awkwardly before the microphone. As soon as he opened his mouth, everyone burst out laughing. We all know what the poor man should have said, but what he actually said was: "This is the Poo and Ee Seed Bird Company. Good ladies, evening and gentlemen!" Six men have been trapped in a mine for seventeen hours. If they are not brought to the surface soon they may lose their lives. However, rescue operations are proving difficult. If explosives are used, vibrations will cause the roof of the mine to collapse. Rescue workers are therefore drilling a hole on the north side of the mine. They intend to bring the men up in a special capsule. If there had not been a hard layer of rock beneath the soil, they would have completed the job in a few hours. As it is, they have been drilling for sixteen hours and they still have a long way to go. Meanwhile, a microphone, which was lowered into the mine two hours ago, has enabled the men to keep in touch with their closest relatives. Though they are running out of food and drink, the men are cheerful and confident that they will get out soon. They have been told that rescue operations are progressing smoothly. If they knew how difficult it was to drill through the hard rock, they would lose heart.

I think that, from a biological standpoint, human life almost reads like a poem.It has its own rhythm and beat, its internal cycles of growth and decay. It begins with innocent childhood, followed by awkward adolescence trying awkwardly to adapt itself to mature society, with its young passions and follies, its ideals and ambitions;then it reaches a manhood of intenseactivities, profiting from experience and learning more about society and human nature; at middle age, there is a slight easing of tension,a mellowing of character like the ripening of fruit or the mellowing of good wine, and the gradual acquiring of a more tolerant, more cynical and at the same time a kindlier view of life;then in the sunset of our life, the endocrine glands decrease their activity, and if we have a true philosophy of old age and have ordered our life pattern according to it,it is for us the age of peace and security and leisure and contentment;finally, life flickers out and one goes into eternal sleep, never to wake up again. One should be able to sense the beauty of thisrhythm of life, to appreciate, as we do in grand symphonies, its main theme, its strains of conflict and the final resolution. The movements of these cycles are very much the same in a normal life, but the music must be provided by the individual himself. In some souls, the discordant note becomes harsher and harsher and finally overwhelms or submerges the main melody.Sometimes the discordant note gains so much power that the music can no longer go on, and the individual shoots himself with a pistol or jumps into a river. But that is because his original leitmotif has been hopelessly over shadowed through the lack of a good self education. Otherwise the normal human life runs to its normal end in a kind of dignified movement and procession. No one can say that a life with childhood, manhood and old age is not a beautiful arrangement; the day hasits morning, noon and sunset, and the year has its seasons, and it is good that it is so. There is no goodor bad in life, except what is good according to its own season. And if we take this biological view of life and try to live according to the seasons, no one but a conceited fool or an impossible idealist can denythat human life can be lived like a poem. First of all, love is a joint experience between two persons but the fact that it is a joint experience does not mean that it is a similar experience of the two people involved. There are the lover and the beloved, but these two come from different countries. Often the beloved is only a stimulus for all the stored uplove which has lain quiet within the lover for a long time hitherto. And somehow every lover knows this. He feels in his soul that his love is a solitary thing. He comes to know a new, strange loneliness and it is this knowledge which makes him suffer. So there is only one thing for the lover to do. He must house hislove within himself as best he can; he must create for himself a whole new inward world - a world intense and strange, complete in himself. Let it be added here that this lover about whom we speak need not necessarily be a young man saving for a wedding ring this lover can be a man, woman, child, or indeed any human creature on this earth. Now, the beloved can also be of any description. The most outlandish people can be the stimulus for love. A man may be a doddering great grandfather and still love only a strange girl he saw in the streets of Cheehaw one afternoon two decades past. The preacher may love a fallen woman. The beloved may be treacherous, greasy headed, and given to evil habits. Yes, and the lover may see this as clearly as anyone else - but that does not affect the evolution of his love one whit. A most mediocre person can be the object of a lovewhich is wild, extravagant, and beautiful as the poison lilies in the swamp. A good man may be the stimulus for a love both violent and debased, or a jabbering madman may bring about in the soul of someone a tender and simple idyll. Therefore, the value and quality of any love is determined solely by the lover himself. It is for this reason that most of us would rather love than be loved. Almost everyone wants to be the lover. And the curt truth is that, in a deep secret way, the state of being beloved is intolerable to many. The beloved fears and hates the lover, and with the best of reasons. For the lover is forever trying to strip bare his beloved. The lover craves any possible relation with the beloved, even if this experience can cause him only pain. My friend said cars are a pain. What he meant was that his car was a lot of trouble. I supposehe must have bought a “lemon”, that is, a car full of problems and not worth its keep. Not everybody feels the same way about cars. To some, cars are just machines onwheels. These people hunt for the best value. They look for vehicles that are affordable butreliable, gas efficient, comfortable enough, reasonably safe and not too expensive to repair.Incontrast, you have also seen owners who lovingly polished their machines, dressing them infancy seat covers, and attaching cute little doodads to the windows. To some, cars are not machines. They are the emotional extensions of their owners.Thinkabout the adrenalin high when one looks at a BMW. The status, speed and wealth identifiedwith the BMW are certainly tempting. Think Jaguar, and we picture the sleek, dangerous, fastand powerful black cat with rippling muscles leaping after its prey. What about the latest hotwheels - the mini-vans and jeeps? They spell outdoors, young, sporty, carefree, cool. Or cutelittle Smart cars - trendy, city, efficient, modern. There is also a special class of car owners - the sentimental. To them, modern day vehicles areartistic disasters - tasteless and boring. For them, the only real cars are vintage those reallyold-fashion vehiclesyou see in movies about the days of our great grandparents. These carsmay be antique but not ugly. They are polished to a dazzling shine, with spotless chrome andbright clean tires. As for me, I shudder at the cost of a new vehicle. So for now, just get me a sturdy used carthat can bring me from here to there without breaking down. Besides, I do not have to fretabout someone running an initiation scratch on the new paint job.

While explaining stress management to an audience the lecturer raised a glass of water and asked ‘How heavy is this glass of water?" Answers called out ranged from 20g to 500g. The lecturer replied “The absolute weight doesn"t matter. It depends on how long you try to hold it. If I hold it for a minute that"s not a problem. If I hold it for an hour I"ll have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day you"ll have to call an ambulance. In each case it"s the same weight but the longer I hold it the heavier it bees.” He continued “And that"s the way it is with stress management. If we carry our burdens all the time sooner or later as the burden bees increasingly heavy we won"t be able to carry on.” “As with the glass of water you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we"re refreshed we can carry on with the burden.” “So before you return home tonight put the burden of work down. Don"t carry it home. You can pick it up tomorrow. Whatever burdens you"re carrying now let them down for a moment if you can.” Here are 5 simple ways to increase your peace of mind: 1. Do your most daunting task first thing in the morning It"s tempting to start your day with easy tasks. Don"t. Pushing a daunting task back is like holding a glass of water in an outstretched arm. At first nothing happens but if you do it for hours or even days you will soon feel the stress. Do the most annoying task first thing in the morning and enjoy increased productivity and peace of mind for the rest of the day. 2. Let go of things you don"t control You make plans to go outside with friends. But at the last minute it starts raining. What"s your reaction? Some people upset and angry and find the nearest person and start plaining to them. “It"s not FAIR that it"s raining. This _always_ happens to me!…” That"s not going to acplish anything - the rain won"t stop just because you throw a tantrum. *The rain doesn"t care.* So make the best of the situation. What I do in such situation is go for a quick walk in the park (because rain has its own awesomeness) or just lie in bed reading a good Terry Pratchett book listening to the rain beating on my window. Make the most of what you do control and don"t worry about what you don"t. 3. Don"t worry about what others are thinking I used to be very self-conscious about my dancing. I would rarely go out with my friends and even if I did I wouldn"t dance instead just standing awkwardly by the side because I was worried of what others would think. Then one day in high school I decided that enough was enough. So the next time I went out with my friends I just went to the dance floor and danced like nobody was watching. And the funny thing was - nobody cared. In fact people only liked me MORE because I was having fun. Don"t worry about what others are thinking of you - most likely they"re too busy wondering what others are thinking of them. 4. List 3 things you love about your situation right now I first shared this technique with the Positivity Blog readers in my post The Plague of Happiness Ever After (it"s got a dragon and everything in it read it!) Just list 3 simple things about any part of your life that you love. Like “3 simple things I love about the room I"m in right now” or “3 simple things I love about this week” or anything else. This is a great technique if you"re ever bored while stuck in traffic or waiting in the grocery store checkout lane. You can immediately transform boredom into happiness and peace of mind! 5. Walk to a window look outside and take a single deep breath I got this technique from the Zen master Mary Jaksch. Just walk to a window look outside and then take a single deep breath focusing only on that breath and nothing else in the whole world. This technique sounds extremely simple but you won"t believe how much it can instantaneously increase your peace of mind. And because this is the last tip you can try it immediately when you finish reading this blog post. Just walk to a window look outside and take a single deep breath focusing on the air going in and out of your lungs and nothing else. The Plague of Happiness Ever After文章中第一次和读者分享这个技巧的。

1 The Oxen by Thomas Hardy Christmas Eve, and twelve of the clock. "Now they are all on their knees," An elder said as we sat in a flock By the embers in hearthside ease. We pictured the meek mild creatures where They dwelt in their strawy pen, Nor did it occur to one of us there To doubt they were kneeling then. So fair a fancy few would weave In these years! Yet, I feel, If someone said on Christmas Eve, "e; see the oxen kneel, "In the lonely barton by yonder coomb Our childhood used to know," I should go with him in the gloom, Hoping it might be so. 2 The Painted Bed by Donald Hall "Even when I danced erect by the Nile"s garden I constructed Necropolis. Ten million fellaheen cells of my body floated stones to establish a white museum." Grisly, foul, and terrific is the speech of bones, thighs and arms slackened into desiccated sacs of flesh hanging from an armature where muscle was, and fat. "I lie on the painted bed diminishing, concentrated on the journey I undertake to repose without pain in the palace of darkness, my body beside your body." 3 Caribbean Marsh by Muna Lee Acres of mangrove, crowding the sea-streaked marsh, Acres of mangrove, wading toward the beaches, And here and there a milky-white bloom tossed On fragile boughs above the flooded reaches. Mangrove thrusts deep in salty mud, Balances uneasily upon its three-pronged roots, Huddles from wind in its dissonance of leaves. Tempest and drought it has withstood, This straggling orchard that bears no fruits, This field where none will garner sheaves. Sucking life up from the acrid marsh, Drawing life down from the burning sun, All the year offers of crude and harsh There between sea and shore it has known. Wave and glare, sea-urge, sea-drift, It has been their victim, proved their power, Persisting bleakly for one end alone- Through an unheeded hour Briefly, awkwardly, to lift This frail, inconsequent flower. 4 Carmel Point by Robinson Jeffers The extraordinary patience of things! This beautiful place defaced with a crop of surburban houses- How beautiful when we first beheld it, Unbroken field of poppy and lupin walled with clean cliffs; No intrusion but two or three horses pasturing, Or a few milch cows rubbing their flanks on the outcrop rockheads- Now the spoiler has e: does it care? Not faintly. It has all time. It knows the people are a tide That swells and in time will ebb, and all Their works dissolve. Meanwhile the image of the pristine beauty Lives in the very grain of the granite, Safe as the endless ocean that climbs our cliff.-As for us: We must uncenter our minds from ourselves; We must unhumanize our views a little, and bee confident As the rock and ocean that we were made from. 5 The Paper Nautilus by Marianne Moore For authorities whose hopes are shaped by mercenaries? Writers entrapped by teatime fame and by muters" forts? Not for these the paper nautilus constructs her thin glass shell. Giving her perishable souvenir of hope, a dull white outside and *** ooth- edged inner surface glossy as the sea, the watchful maker of it guards it day and night; she scarcely eats until the eggs are hatched. Buried eight-fold in her eight arms, for she is in a sense a devil- fish, her glass ram"shorn-cradled freight is hid but is not crushed; as Hercules, bitten by a crab loyal to the hydra, was hindered to succeed, the intensively watched eggs ing from the shell free it when they are freed,—— leaving its wasp-nest flaws of white on white, and close- laid Ionic chiton-folds like the lines in the mane of a Parthenon horse, round which the arms had wound themselves as if they knew love is the only fortress strong enough to trust to.

原则二:Just like 是wordy, like就可以了。Like**, **also 也是redundant。 (e.g.,og119.C) 3. like (e.g.,og091)但like+n.也可作表语 (looks like, reads like (e.g.,大全568)),或普通状语 (说普通是区分独立成分)(v.+like+n.,e.g., og119)。平时我们说“work like a dog”,即属此类。 4.当like+n. 5. 当like+n.作状语时,感觉GMAT接受v.+like+n.,很少用v.+n.+like+n.,除非是固定用法(如:treat...like... 例如下面的句子,GMAT会认为confusing: Tom drives his car like a tank. (drive like a tank, or car like a tank?) 6. like, as, 和 as if。 Tom drives his car as he drives a tank。 Tom drives his car as if it were a tank。 "n1, like n2" 和 "n1, such as n2"。 时,用like。 8. "like this/these" 和 "sth. of this kind",改成"such+n." (e.g.,大全792) 9. like和unlike。 He works unlike a dog (别扭)。注意 "is not unlike" 表强调,不要改成"is like"。 (e.g., og051) 例: og091:like独立成分,平行比较 og060,大全844,大全045:like 歧义 og119/og189:v.+like 普通状语,as过于死板大全310/大全973: as if,treat...like 大全568:系表结构,read like... 大全792:like these => such+n. 大全229:表“象..”,用like,不用such as og208:表“比如...”,只能用such as,不用like二. 1. Like many self-taught artists, Perle Hessing did not begin to paint until she was well into middle age. (A) Like (B) As have (C) Just as with (D) Just like(A) (E) As did Choice A, the best answer, is concise and grammatically correct, using the comparative preposition like to express the comparison between many self-taught artists and Perle Hessing. Choices B and E, which replace A"s prepositional phrase with clauses introduced by as, use auxiliary verbs that cannot properly be completed by any part of the verb phrase in the main clause: neither have... did not begin nor did... did not begin is logically or grammatically sound. In C and D, Just as with and Just like are both unnecessary wordy. 2. Like Auden, the language of James Merrill is chatty, arch, and conversational—given to complex syntactic flights as well as to prosaic free-verse strolls. (A) Like Auden, the language of James Merrill (B) Like Auden, James Merrill"s language (C) Like Auden"s, James Merrill"s language (D) As with Auden, James Merrill"s language(C) (E) As is Auden"s the language of James Merrill At issue is a comparison of Auden"s language with Merrill"s language. Only C, the best choice, uses the elliptical like Auden"s (language being understood), to compare Auden"s language with Merrill"s language. A, B, and D compare Auden (the person) with Merrill"s language. Choice E is awkward and unidiomatic. 3. Like their male counterparts, women scientists are above average in terms of intelligence and creativity, but unlike men of science, their female counterparts have had to work against the grain of occupational stereotyping to enter a “man"s world.” (A) their female counterparts have had to work (B) their problem is working (C) one thing they have had to do is work (D) the handicap women of science have had is to work(E) (E) women of science have had to work E is the best choice. The meaning is clear despite the relative complexity of the sentence, the comparison of women with men is logical, and parallelism is maintained throughout. In A, the construction unlike men of science, their female counterparts violates rules of parallelism and syntax. It would best be rendered as unlike men of science, women of science.... Choice B incorrectly suggests that a comparison is being made between men of science and a. problem faced by female scientists. In C, the lengthy separation between women and they makes the pronoun reference vague, and the comparison between men of science and one thing (rather than women of science) is faulty. The phrasing is unnecessarily wordy as well. Choice D introduces unnecessary redundancy and awkwardness with the construction the handicap women... have had is to work. Choice D also incorrectly compares male scientists with a handicap faced by female scientists. 4. Like Rousseau, Tolstoi rebelled against the unnatural complexity of human relations in modern society. (A) Like Rousseau, Tolstoi rebelled (B) Like Rousseau, Tolstoi"s rebellion was (C) As Rousseau, Tolstoi rebelled (D) As did Rousseau, Tolstoi"s rebellion was(A) (E) Tolstoi"s rebellion, as Rousseau"s, was In choice A, the best answer, a clear and logical comparison is made between Rousseau and Tolstoi. Choice B illogically compares a person, Rousseau, to an event, Tolstoi"s rebellion. Also, Tolstoi"s rebellion was against is less direct than Tolstoi rebelled against. Inserting did after As would make C grammatical. Because As is a conjunction, it must introduce a clause; hence the noun Rousseau must have a verb. Choice D compares an implied action (As did Rousseau) with a noun (Tolstoi"s rebellion). Choice E is awkwardly formed, and like is needed in place of as to compare two nouns (rebellion is understood after Rousseau"s). Also, Tolstoi"s rebellion... was against is less direct than Tolstoi rebelled against. 5. Like the one reputed to live in Loch Ness, also an inland lake connected to the ocean by a river, inhabitants of the area around Lake Champlain claim sightings of a long and narrow “sea monster.” (A) Like the one reputed to live in Loch Ness, also an inland lake connected to the ocean by a river, inhabitants of the area around Lake Champlain claim sightings of a long and narrow “sea monster.” (B) Inhabitants of the area around Lake Champlain claim sightings of a long and narrow “sea monster” similar to the one reputed to live in Loch Ness, which, like Lake Champlain, is an inland lake connected to the ocean by a river. (C) Inhabitants of the area around Lake Champlain claim sightings of a long and narrow “sea monster” similar to Loch Ness"s, which, like Lake Champlain, is an inland lake connected to the ocean by a river. (D) Like Loch Ness" reputed monster, inhabitants of the area around Lake Champlain, also an inland lake connected to the ocean by a river, claim sightings of a long and narrow “sea monster.”(B) (E) Similar to that reputed to live in Loch Ness, inhabitants of the area around Lake Champlain, also an inland lake connected to the ocean by a river, claim sightings of a long and narrow “sea monster.” Choice A, D and E illogically compare the monster reputed to live in Loch Ness to the inhabitants of the area around Lake Champlain, not to the monster that some local inhabitants claim to have sighted. Furthermore, in E the phrase Similar to that reputed to live in Loch Ness is needlessly wordy and indirect. C is faulty because the pronoun which would refer to Loch Ness, not to the “sea monster” similar to Loch Ness"s. B, the best choice, uses which correctly and makes a logical comparison. The question is a little easier than middle difficulty. 6. Like Byron at Missolonghi, Jack London was slowly killed by the mistakes of the medical men who treated him. (A) Like Byron (B) Like Byron"s death (C) Just as Byron died (D) Similar to Byron(A) (E) As did Byron Choice A correctly compares two persons, Byron and Jack London. Choice B illogically compares Byron"s death to London. Choice C does not compare one person to another and could be read as saying Just at the time that Byron died. Choice D misstates the idea: the point is not that London was similar to Byron but that he was like Byron in the manner of his death. In choice E, did cannot grammatically be substituted for was in the phrase was slowly killed. This question is a little more difficult than the average. 7. Like Haydn, Schubert wrote a great deal for the stage, but he is remembered principally for his chamber and concert-hall music. (A) Like Haydn, Schubert (B) Like Haydn, Schubert also (C) As has Haydn, Schubert (D) As did Haydn, Schubert also(A) (E) As Haydn did, Schubert also Choice A is correct. In B, also is redundant after Like, which establishes the similarity between Haydn and Schubert. As in choices C, D, and E is not idiomatic in a comparison of persons; has in C wrongly suggests that the action was recently completed; and also in D and E is superfluous. This question is a little more difficult than the average.

您好:1Six men have been trapped in a mine for seventeen hours. If there had not been a hard layer of rock beneath the soil, they would have pleted the job in a few hours. As it is, they have been drilling for sixteen hours and they still have a long way to go. Meanwhile, a microphone, which was lowered into the mine two hours ago, has enabled the men to keep in touch with the closest relatives. Though they are running out of food and drink, the men are cheerful and confident that they will get out soon. They have been told that rescue operations are progressing *** oothly. If they knew how difficult it was to drill through the hard rock, they would lose heart. 2 People will do anything to see a free show--even if it is a bad one. When the news got round that a variety show would be presented at our local cinema by the P. and U. Bird Seed Company, we all rushed to see it. We had to queue for hours to get in and there must have been several hundred people present just be- fore the show began. Unfortunately, the show was one of the dullest we have ever seen. Those who failed to get in need not have felt disappointed as many of the artistes who should have appeared did not e. Good ladies, evening and gentlemen !" 好女士们,晚上好!” 3 Though Brazil is one of the richest countries in the world, much of it has not yet been developed. It was mainly for this reason that the Brazilian government decided to have a new city built 600 miles north-west of Rio de Janeiro. Designed by the great architect Lucio Costa, the new city, Brasilia, replaced Rio de Janeiro as the capital of Brazif in 1960. Brasilia has been carefully planned for modern living. Its wide roads, which can take fourteen lanes of traffic, have been kept away from living areas. Children do not have to cross busy streets to go to school. Housewives can visit-shopping centres on foot, for in these specially designed living areas, cars are unnecessary. At first, the government had great difficulty in persuading people to leave Rio and to settle in Brasilia. Since 1960, however, the population has been growing all the time. Brasilia has quickly established itself as the capital of the country. The idea to have the capital moved so far inland will have a great effect on the future of Brazil. 4 A pilot noticed a balloon which seemed to be making for a Royal Air Force Station nearby. He informed the station at once, but no one there was able to explain the mystery. The officer in the control tower was very angry when he heard the news, because balloons can be a great danger to aircraft. He said that someone might by spying on the station and the pilot was ordered to keep track of the strange object. The pilot managed to circle the balloon for some time. He could make out three men in a basket under it and one of them was holding field-glasses. When the balloon was over the station, the pilot saw one of the men taking photographs. Soon afterwards, the balloon began to descend and it landed near an airfield. The police were called in, but they could not arrest anyone, for the basket contained two Members of Parliament and the Commanding Officer of the station! 英语完形填空when I was growing up I do not recall hearing the words

When I was growing up I do not recall hearing the words I love you from my father。 When your father never says them to you when you are a child, it gets tougher and tougher for him to say those words as he gets older。 To tell the truth, I could not honestly remember when I had last said those words to him either。 I decided to set my ego aside and make the first move。 After some hesitation, in our next phone conversation I blurted out the words, Dad I love you! There was a silence at the other end and he awkwardly replied, Well, same back at ya!I chuckled and said, Dad, I know you love me, and when you are ready, I know you will say what you want to say。Fifteen minutes later my mother called and nervously asked, Paul, is everything okay?A few weeks later, Dad concluded our phone conversation with the words, Paul, I love you。 I was at work during this conversation and the tears were rolling down my cheeks as I finally heard the love。 As we both sat there in tears we realized that this special moment had taken our father/son relationship to a new level。A short while after this special moment, my father narrowly escaped death following heart surgery。 Many times since, I have pondered the thought, if I did not take the first step and Dad did not survive the surgery, I would have never heard the love。

From a boat I scanned the shore of East Island for albatross chick .These largest of seabirds spend most of their lives far at sea, but at nesting time they concentrate ashore on remote islands like this one. Two albatross species had hatched their chicks four or five months earlier. I also noticed some big tiger sharks show up at the peak of the fledging season, looking to eat young albatrosses staying in the shallows. During the months of June and July the two separate worlds of bird and fish come together. Unaware of the danger, the 30 or 40 chicks knew only that their departure time was now. I watched as some of the birds caught the wind, sailed out awkwardly over the water, and flew off into the wild blue sky, safely beyond the danger zone. Others landed a mere 30 yards from the shore, where the situation was wilder. A shark would move in and an unfortunate chick would disappear in a microsecond, before I could even raise my camera. Tiger sharks routinely start feeding at twilight, but here they fed on albatrosschicks all day. The morning of June 20 was a fairly typical one. Between 6:45 and 7:45 a.m. sixteen albatross chicks flew from the beach at East Island. In that hour five were attacked and killed.

TEXT A young boy faces the impossible task of trying to soften the blow of tragic mews. You Go Your Way, I"ll Go Mine The messenger got off his bicycle in front of the house of Mrs. Rosa Sandoval. He went to the door and knocked gently. He knew almost immediately that someone was inside the house. He could not hear anything, but he was sure the knock was bringing someone to the door and he was most eager to see who this person would be -- his woman named Rosa Sandoval who was now to heat of murder in the world and to feel it in herself. The door was not a long time opening, but there was no hurry in the way it moved on its hinges. The movement of the door was as if, whoever she was, she and nothing in the world to fear. Then the door was open, and there she was. To Homer the Mexican woman was beautiful. He could see that she had been patient all her life, so that now, after years of it, her lips were set in a gentle and saintly smile. But like all people who never receive telegrams the appearance of a messenger at the front door is full of terrible implication. Homer knew that Mrs. Rosa Sandoval was shocked to see him. Her first word was the first word of all surprise. She said "Oh," as if instead of a messenger she had thought of opening the door to someone she had know a long time and would be pleased to sit down with. Before she spoke again she studied Homer"s eyes and Homer Knew that she knew the message was not a welcome one. "You have a telegram?" she said. It wasn"t Homer"s fault. His work was to deliver telegrams. Even so, it seemed to him that he was part of the whole mistake. He felt awkward and almost as if he alone were responsible for what had happened. At the same time he wanted to come right out and say, "I"m only a messenger, Mrs. Sandoval, I"m very sorry I must bring you a telegram like this, but it is only because it is my work to do so." "Who is it for?" the Mexican woman said. "Mrs. Rosa Sandoval, 1129 G Street." Homer said. He extended the telegram to the Mexican woman, but she would not touch it. "Are you Mrs. Sandoval?" Homer said. "Please," the woman said. "Please come in. I cannot read English. I am Mexican. I read only La Prensa which comes from Mexico City." She paused a moment and looked at the boy standing awkwardly as near the door as he could be and still be inside the house. "Please," she said, "what does the telegram say?" "Mrs. Sandoval," the messenger said, "the telegram says --" But now the woman interrupted him. "But you must open the telegram and read it to me," she said. "You have not opened it." "Yes, ma"am," Homer said as if he were speaking to a school teacher who had just corrected him. He opened the telegram with nervous fingers. The Mexican woman stooped to pick up the torn envelope, and tried to smooth it out. As she did so she said, "Who sent the telegram -- my son Juan Domingo?" "No, ma"am." Homer said. "The telegram is from the War Department." "War Department?" the Mexican woman said. "Mrs. Sandoval," Homer said swiftly, "your son is dead. Maybe it"s a mistake, Everybody makes a mistake, Mrs. Sandoval. Maybe it wasn"t your son. Maybe it was somebody else. The telegram says it was Juan Domingo. But maybe the telegram is wrong," The Mexican woman pretended not to hear. "Oh, do not be afraid," she said. "Come inside. Come inside. I will bring you candy." She took the boy"s arm and brought him to the table at the center of the room and there she made him sit. "All boys like candy," she said. "I will bring you candy." She went into another room and soon returned with an old chocolate candy box. She opened the box at the table and in it Homer saw a strange kind of candy. "Here," she said. "Eat this candy. All boys like candy." Homer took a piece of the candy from the box, put it into his mouth, and tried to chew. "You would not bring me a bad telegram," she said. "You are a good boy -- like my little Juanito when he was a little boy. Eat another piece." And she made the messenger take another piece of the candy. Homer sat chewing the dry candy while the Mexican woman talked. "It is our own candy," she said, "from cactus. I made it for my Juanito when he come home, but you eat it. You are my boy, too." Now suddenly she began to sob, holding herself in as if weeping were a disgrace. Homer wanted to get up and run, but he knew he would stay. He even thought he might stay the rest of his life. He just didn"t know what else to do to try to make the woman less unhappy, and if she had asked him to take the place of her son, he would not have been able to refuse, because he would not have known how. He got to his feet, as if by standing he meant to begin correcting what could not be corrected and then he knew the foolishness of this intention and became more awkward than ever. In his heart he was saying over and over again, "What can I do? What the hell can I do? I"m only the messenger." NEW WORDS soften v.

When he had killed the guard, the prisoner of war quickly dragged him into the bushes. Working rapidly in the darkness, he soon changed into the dead man"s clothes. Now, dressed in a blue uniform and with a rifle over his shoulder, the prisoner marched boldly up and down in front of the camp. He could hear shouting in the camp itself. Lights were blazing and men were running here and there: they had just discovered that a prisoner had escaped. At that moment, a large black car with four officers inside it, stopped at the camp gates. The officers got out and the prisoner stood to attention and saluted as they passed. When they had gone, the driver of the car came towards him. The man obviously wanted to talk. He was rather elderly with grey hair and clear blue eyes. The prisoner felt sorry for him, but there was nothing else he could do. As the man came near, the prisoner knocked him to the ground with a sharp blow. Then, jumping into the car, he drove off as quickly as he could. Lesson82 Monster or fish? Fishermen and sailors sometimes claim to have seen monsters in the sea. Though people have often laughed at stories told by seamen, it is now known that many of these "monsters" which have at times been sighted are simply strange fish. Occasionally, unusual creatures are washed to the shore, but they are rarely caught out at sea. Some time ago, however, a peculiar fish was caught near Madagascar. A small fishing-boat was carried miles out to sea by the powerful fish as it pulled on the line. Realizing that this was no ordinary fish, the fisherman made every effort not to damage it in any way. When it was eventually brought to shore, it was found to be over thirteen feet long. It had a head like a horse, big blue eyes, shining silver skin, and a bright red tail, The fish, which has since been sent to a museum where it is being examined by a scientist, is called an oarfish. Such creatures have rarely been seen alive by man as they live at a depth of six hundred feet.Lesson83 After the elections 大选之后The former Prime Minister, Mr Wentworth Lane, was defeated in the recent elections. He is now retiring from political life and has gone abroad. My friend, Crawley, has always been a fanatical opponent of Mr Lane"s Radical Progressive Party. After the elections, Crawley went to the former Prime Minister"s house. When he asked if Mr Lane lived there, the policeman on duty told him that since his defeat, the ex-Prime Minister had gone abroad. On the following day, Crawley went to the house again. The same policeman was just walking slowly past the entrance, when Crawley asked the same question. Though a little suspicious this time, the policeman gave him the same answer. The day after, Crawley went to the house once more and asked exactly the same question. This time, the policeman lost his temper." I told you yesterday and the day before yesterday," he shouted, "Mr Lane was defeated in the elections. He has retired from political life and gone to live abroad !" " I know," answered Crawley," but I love to hear you say it !" Lesson84 On strike 罢工Busmen have decided to go on strike next week. The strike is due to begin on Tuesday. No one knows how long it will last. The busmen have stated that the strike will continue until general agreement is reached about pay and working conditions. Most people believe that the strike will last for at least a week. Many owners of private cars are going to offer "free rides" to people on their way to work. This will relieve pressure on the trains to some extent. Meanwhile, a number of university students have volunteered to drive buses while the strike lasts. All the young men are expert drivers, but before they drive any of the buses, they will have to pass a special test. The students are going to take the test in two days" time. Even so, people are going to find it difficult to get to work. But so far, the public has expressed its gratitude to the students in letters to the Press. Only one or two people have objected that the students will drive too fast!Lesson85 Never too old to learn I have just received a letter from my old school informing me that my former head- master, Mr Regmald Page, will be retiring next week. Pupils of the school, old and new, will be sending him a present to mark the occasion. All those who have contributed towards the gift will sign their names in a large album which will be sent to the headmaster"s home. We shall all remember Mr Page for his patience and understanding and for the kindly encouragement he gave us when we went so unwillingly to school. A great many former pupils will be attending a farewell dinner in his honour next Thursday. It is a curious coincidence that the day before his retirement, Mr Page will have been teaching for a total of forty years. After he has retired, he will devote himself to gardening. For him, this will be an entirely new hobby. But this does not matter, for, as he has often remarked, one is never too old to learn. Lesson86 Out of control 失控As the man tried to swing the speed-boat round, the steering-wheel came away in his hands. He waved desperately to his companion, who had been water-skiing for the last fifteen minutes. Both men had hardly had time to realize what was happening when they were thrown violent1y into the sea. The speed-boat had struck a buoy, but it continued to move very quickly across the water. Both men had just begun to swim towards the shore. when they noticed with dismay that the speed-boat was moving in a circle. It now came straight towards them at tremendous speed. In less than a minute, it roared past them only a few feet away. After it had passed, they swam on as quickly as they could because they knew that the boat would soon return. They had just had enough time to swim out of danger when the boat again completed a circle. On this occasion, however, it had slowed down considerably. The petrol had nearly all been used up. Before long, the noise dropped completely and the boat began to drift gently across the water. At the time the murder was committed, I was travelling on the 8.0 o"clock train to London," said the man. "Do you always catch such an early train ?" asked the inspector. "Of course I do," answered the man." I must be at work at 10.0 o"clock. My employer will confirm that I was there on time." " Would a later train get you to work on time ?" asked the inspector. " I suppose it would, but I never catch a later train." "At what time did you arrive at the station ?" "At ten to eight. I bought a paper and waited for the train." "And you didn"t notice anything unusual ?" " Of course not." "I suggest," said the inspector, "that you are not telling the truth. I suggest that you did not catch the 8.0 o"clock train, but that you caught the 8.25 which would still get you to work on time. You see, on the morning of the murder, the 8.0 o"clock train did not run at all. It broke down at Ferngreen station and was taken off the line."Lesson88 Trapped in a mine 困在矿井里Six men have been trapped in a mine for seventeen hours. Its wide roads, which can take fourteen lanes of traffic, have been keptaway from living areas.

Lesson87 A perfect alibi 极好的不在犯罪现场的证据 "At the time the murder was committed, I was travelling on the 8.0 o"clock train to London," said the man."Do you always catch such an early train ?" asked the inspector."Of course I do," answered the man." I must be at work at 10.0 o"clock. My employer will confirm that I was there on time."" Would a later train get you to work on time ?" asked the inspector." I suppose it would, but I never catch a later train.""At what time did you arrive at the station ?""At ten to eight. I bought a paper and waited for the train.""And you didn"t notice anything unusual ?"" Of course not.""I suggest," said the inspector, "that you are not telling the truth. I suggest that you did not catch the 8.0 o"clock train, but that you caught the 8.25 which would still get you to work on time. You see, on the morning of the murder, the 8.0 o"clock train did not run at all. It broke down at Ferngreen station and was taken off the line." Lesson88 Trapped in a mine Six men have been trapped in a mine for seventeen hours. Meanwhile, a microphone, which was lowered into the mine two hours ago, has enabled the men to keep in touch with the closest relatives. Though they are running out of food and drink, the men are cheerful and confident that they will get out soon. They have been told that rescue operations are progressing smoothly. If they knew how difficult it was to drill through the hard rock, they would lose heart. Lesson89 A slip of the tongue 口误 People will do anything to see a free show--even if it is a bad one.

所以,亚洲的Hip-Hop音乐就别具一格,不同于美国式的NEW YORK style与L.A.style。 像被誉为“最年轻的R&B音乐诗人”的英国歌手Craig Daivid,其R&B音乐中的Garage成份较多,而且融入了较多的摇滚、JAZZ、福音元素,并在专辑《BORN TO DO IT》中开创“两步/Garage”曲风。 hip-hop 文化的四种表现方式包括rap (有节奏、押韵地说话)、b-boying(街 舞)、dj-ing(玩唱片及唱盘技巧)、raffiti writing(涂 鸦 艺 术)。 Hey man!
