EthnicityIndividuals who consider themselves, or are considered by others, to share common characteristics that differentiate them from the other collectivities in a society, and from which they develop their distinctive cultural behaviour, form an ethnic group.Raceeach of the major divisions of humankind, having distinct physical characteristics简言之,Race应该翻译成种族,它是以“外表”来区别,正如我们常说的黄种人,白种人,黑种人。

关于racism(种族歧视),在线等!

Racism, by its simplest definition is the belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race.[1] People with racist beliefs exhibit stereotype-based prejudices towards individuals and groups of people according to their race. In the case of institutional racism, certain racial groups may be denied rights or benefits, or get preferential treatment. Racial discrimination typically points out taxonomic differences between different groups of people, even though anybody can be racialised, independently of their somatic differences. According to the United Nations conventions, there is no distinction between the term racial discrimination and ethnic discrimination.

there"s no way I could be a racist... it just wouldn"t make any sense.

Even though some people do not show raci *** against other races on the surface they still have subconscious mind that people with different skin colour is inferior. The reason for those who do not join the racist is because they are have a more mature mind and have higher tolarence than those who are racist. Most cases of raci *** in the world are against the black race because their geic country - Africa falls behind from other countries in terms of economy as well as civilization and they suffer from poverty and hunger. In face every races have a certain level of bias towards other races. For instance some Hong Kong people discriminate against the white race by giving them unpolite nicknames regardless of their strong economic background. Consequences from raci *** can be very serious in terms of racial wars it also interrupts the exchange of cultures on a international scale. So you can see how raci *** causes losses to human. To put an end in raci *** our society should educates its citizens about equal opportuities and the ernment should also establishes and strengthenes laws on equlity.

Obama"s success isn"t all good news for black Americans As Erin White watched the election results head towards victory for Barack Obama, she felt a burden lifting from her shoulders. "In that one second, it was a validation for my whole race," she recalls. "I"ve always been an achiever," says White, who is studying for an MBA at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. "But there had always been these things in the back of my mind questioning whether I really can be who I want. It was like a shadow, following me around saying you can only go so far. Now it"s like a barrier has been let down." White"s experience is what many psychologists had expected - that Obama would prove to be a powerful role model for African Americans. Some hoped his rise to prominence would have a big impact on white Americans, too, challenging those who still harbor racist sentiments. "The traits that characterize him are very contradictory to the racial stereotypes that black people are aggressive and uneducated," says Ashby Plant of Florida State University. "He"s very intelligent and eloquent." Sting in the tail Ashby Plant is one of a number of psychologists who seized on Obama"s candidacy to test hypotheses about the power of role models. Their work is already starting to reveal how the "Obama effect" is changing people"s views and behavior. Perhaps surprisingly, it is not all good news: there is a sting in the tail of the Obama effect. But first the good news. Barack Obama really is a positive role model for African Americans, and he was making an impact even before he got to the White House. Indeed, the Obama effect can be surprisingly immediate and powerful, as Ray Friedman of Vanderbilt University and his colleagues discovered. They tested four separate groups at four key stages of Obama"s presidential campaign. Each group consisted of around 120 adults of similar age and education, and the test assessed their language skills. At two of these stages, when Obama"s success was less than certain, the tests showed a clear difference between the scores of the white and black participants—an average of 12.1 out of 20, compared to 8.8, for example. When the Obama fever was at its height, however, the black participants performed much better. Those who had watched Obama"s acceptance speech as the Democrats" presidential candidate performed just as well, on average, as the white subjects. After his election victory, this was true of all the black participants. Dramatic shift What can explain this dramatic shift? At the start of the test, the participants had to declare their race and were told their results would be used to assess their strengths and weaknesses. This should have primed the subjects with "stereotype threat" u2013 an anxiety that their results will confirm negative stereotypes, which has been shown to damage the performance of African Americans. Obama"s successes seemed to act as a shield against this. "We suspect they felt inspired and energized by his victory, so the stereotype threat wouldn"t prove a distraction," says Friedman. Lingering racism If the Obama effect is positive for African Americans, how is it affecting their white compatriots (同胞)? Is the experience of having a charismatic (有魅力的) black president modifying lingering racist attitudes? There is no easy way to measure racism directly; instead psychologists assess what is known as "implicit bias", using a computer-based test that measures how quickly people associate positive and negative words—such as "love" or "evil"—with photos of black or white faces. A similar test can also measure how quickly subjects associate stereotypical traits—such as athletic skills or mental ability—with a particular group. In a study that will appear in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, Plant"s team tested 229 students during the height of the Obama fever. They found that implicit bias has fallen by as much as 90% compared with the level found in a similar study in 2006. "That"s an unusually large drop," Plant says. While the team can"t be sure their results are due solely to Obama, they also showed that those with the lowest bias were likely to subconsciously associate black skin colour with political words such as "government" or "president". This suggests that Obama was strongly on their mind, says Plant. Drop in bias Brian Nosek of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, who runs a website that measures implicit bias using similar test, has also observed a small drop in bias in the 700,000 visitors to the site since January 2007, which might be explained by Obama"s rise to popularity. However, his preliminary results suggest that change will be much slower coming than Plant"s results suggest. Talking honestly "People now have the opportunity of expressing support for Obama every day," says Daniel Effron at Stanford University in California. "Our research arouses the concern that people may now be more likely to raise negative views of African Americans." On the other hand, he says, it may just encourage people to talk more honestly about their feelings regarding race issues, which may not be such a bad thing. Another part of the study suggests far more is at stake than the mere expression of views. The Obama effect may have a negative side. Just one week after Obama was elected president, participants were less ready to support policies designed to address racial inequality than they had been two weeks before the election. Huge obstacles It could, of course, also be that Obama"s success helps people to forget that a disproportionate number of black Americans still live in poverty and face huge obstacles when trying to overcome these circumstances. "Barack Obama"s family is such a salient (出色的) image, we generalise it and fail to see the larger picture—that there"s injustice in every aspect of American life," says Cheryl Kaiser of the University of Washington in Seattle. Those trying to address issues of racial inequality need to constantly remind people of the inequalities that still exist to counteract the Obama"s effect, she says. Though Plant"s findings were more positive, she too warns against thinking that racism and racial inequalities are no longer a problem. "The last thing I want is for people to think everything"s solved." These findings do not only apply to Obama, or even just to race. They should hold for any role model in any country. "There"s no reason we wouldn"t have seen the same effect on our views of women if Hillary Clinton or Sarah Palin had been elected," says Effron. So the election of a female leader might have a downside for other women. Beyond race We also don"t yet know how long the Obama effect—both its good side and its bad—will last. Political sentiment is notoriously changeable: What if things begin to go wrong for Obama, and his popularity slumps? And what if Americans become so familiar with having Obama as their president that they stop considering his race altogether? "Over time he might become his own entity," says Plant. This might seem like the ultimate defeat for racism, but ignoring the race of certain select individuals—a phenomenon that psychologists call subtyping—also has an insidious (隐伏的) side. "We think it happens to help people preserve their beliefs, so they can still hold on to the previous stereotypes." That could turn out to be the cruelest of all the twists to the Obama effect. 1. How did Erin White feel upon seeing Barack Obama"s victory in the election? A) Excited.

A homosexual male of non-Asian descent who is predominantly attracted to Asian males. Contrary to derisive stereotype, rice queens may fall within a wide age range, as may the objects of their physical and romantic attraction. The professed rice queen does not necessarily project a racist ideal of the submissive Asian onto his desired partner, though cases of this kind of projection do exist. Moreover, relationships between rice queens and potato queens in which the Asian partner enacts the sexualbottom role are not inevitably plagued by an unequal or exploitative power dynamic. Nor does rice queen status necessarily signal an Orientalist fetish; in many cases, the rice queen will simply tend to be attracted to certain physical features genetically common among males of Asian descent.

He had a beautiful hat, and he often put his head out of the window during the trip and looked at the mountains. But the wind pulled his hat off. Mr Jones quickly took his old bag and threw that out of the window too. The other people in the carriage laughed. "Is your bag going to bring your beautiful hat back?" they asked. She went to the man, put the keys in his hand and said, "Young man, you"re stupid! Never leave your keys in your car: someone"s going to steal it!" The man looked at the old woman for a few seconds. Then somebody gave one of the boys a magazine, and they saw a picture of a beautiful lawn-mower in it. There was a seat on it, and there was a woman on the seat. The boy took the picture to his mother and brother and said to them, "Look, that woman"s sitting on the lawn-mower and driving it and cutting the grass. We want one of those." "One of those lawn-mowers?" his mother asked. "No," the boy said. "We want one of those women. Then she can cut grass every week." 5 One of Harry"s feet was bigger and the other. He wrote something on a piece of paper and gave it to Harry. Harry went to the shoemaker in Dick"s village a few days later, and the shoemaker made him some shoes. He likes driving very fast, and he always buys small, fast, red cars. He sometimes takes his mother out in them, and then she always said, "But, Fred, why do you drive these cars? We"re almost sitting on the road!" Then Fred laughs and is happy. He likes being very near the road. Fred is very tall and very fat. Last week he came out of a shop and went to his car. There was a small boy near it. He was looking at the beautiful red car. Then he looked up and saw Fred. "How do you get into that small car?" he asked him. Fred laughed and said, "I don"t get into it. I put it on." 8 Mr and Mrs Yates had one daughter. Her name was Carol, and she was nineteen years old. Carol lived with her parents and worked in an office. She had some friends, but she did not like any of the boys very much. Then she met a very nice young man. His name was George Watts, and he worked in a bank near her office. They went out together quite a lot, and he came to Carol"s parents" house twice, and then last week Carol went to her father and said, "I"m going to marry George Watts, Daddy. He was here yesterday." "Oh, yes," her father said. "He"s a nice boy—but has he got any money?" "Oh, men! All of you are the same," the daughter answered angrily. "I met George on the first of June and on the second he said to me, "Has your father got any money?"" 9 Miss William was a teacher, and there were thirty small children in her class. They were nice children, and Miss Williams liked all of them, but they often lost clothes. It was winter, and the weather was very cold. The children"s mothers always sent them to school with warm coats and hat and gloves. The children came into the classroom in the morning and took off their coats and hats and gloves. They put their coats and hats on hooks on the wall, and they put their gloves in the pockets of their coats Last Tuesday Miss Williams found two small blue gloves on the floor in the evening, and in the morning she said to the children, "Whose gloves are these?", but no one answered. Then she looked at Dick. "Haven"t you got blue gloves, Dick?" she asked him. "Yes, miss," he answered, "but those can"t be mine. I"ve lost mine." 10 Whitebridge was a small village, and old people often came and lived there. Some of them had a lot of old furniture, and they often did not want some of it, because they were in a small house now, so every Saturday morning they put it out, and other people came and looked at it, and sometimes they took it away because they wanted it. Every Saturday, Mr and Mrs Morton put a very ugly old bear"s head out at the side of their gate, but nobody wanted it. Then last Saturday, they wrote, "I"m very lonely here. Please take me," on a piece of paper and put it near the bear"s head. They went to the town, and came in the evening. There were now two bears" heads in front of their house, and there was another piece of paper. It said, "I was lonely too."The poor are very wonderful people. One evening we went out and we picked up four people from the street. And one of them was in a most terrible condition, and I told the sisters: You take care of the other three. I take care of this one who looked worse. So I did for her all that my love can do. I put her in bed, and there was such a beautiful smile on her face. She took hold of my hand as she said just the words "thank you" and she died. I could not help but examine my conscience[良心]before her and I asked what would I say if I was in her place. And my answer was very simple. I would have tried to draw a little attention to myself. I would have said I am hungry, that I am dying, I am cold, I am in pain, or something, but she gave me much more-she gave me her grateful love. And she died with a smile on her face. As did that man whom we picked up from the drain[阴沟、下水道], half eaten with worms, and we brought him to the home. "I have lived like an animal in the street, but I am going to die like an angel, loved and cared for." And it was so wonderful to see the greatness of that man who could speak like that, who could die like that without blaming anybody, without cursing anybody, without comparing anything. Like an angel-this is the greatness of our people. And that is why we believe what Jesus had said: I was hungry, I was naked, I was homeless, I was unwanted, unloved, uncared for, and you did it to me. A Boy and His TreeA long time ago, there was a huge apple tree. A little boy loved to come and play around it every day. He climbed to the tree top, ate the apples, took a nap under the shadow… He loved the tree and the tree loved to play with him. Time went by…The little boy had grown up and he no longer played around the tree. One day, the boy came back to the tree and looked sad. “Come and play with me,” the tree asked the boy. “I am no longer a kid, I don"t play around trees anymore.” The boy replied, “I want toys. I need money to buy them.” “Sorry, but I don"t have money…but you can pick all my apples and sell them. So, you will have money.” The boy was so excited. He picked all the apples on the tree and left happily. The boy didn"t come back after he picked the apples. The tree was sad. One day, the boy returned and the tree was so excited. “Come and play with me.” The tree said. “I don"t have time to play. I have to work for my family. We need a house for shelter. Can you help me?” “Sorry, but I don"t have a house. But you can cut off my branches to build your house.” So the boy cut all the branches of the tree and left happily. The tree was glad to see him happy but the boy didn"t appear since then. The tree was again lonely and sad. One hot summer day, the boy returned and the tree was delighted. “Come and play with me!” the tree said. “I am sad and getting old. I want to go sailing to relax myself. Can you give me a boat?” “Use my trunk to build the boat. You can sail and be happy.” So the boy cut the tree trunk to make a boat. He went sailing and did not show up for a long time. Finally, the boy returned after he left for so many years. “Sorry, my boy. But I don"t have anything for you anymore. No more apples for you.” the tree said. “ I don"t have teeth to bite.” The boy replied. “ No more trunk for you to climb on.” “I am too old for that now.” the boy said. “I really want to give you something…the only thing left is my dying roots.” The tree said with tears. “I don"t need much now, just a place to rest. I am tired after all these years.” The boy replied. “Good! Old tree roots are the best place to lean on and rest. Come here, please sit down with me and have a rest.” The boy sat down and the tree was glad and smiled with tears… This is a story of everyone. The tree is our parent. When we were young, we loved to play with Mom and Dad… When we grow up, we leave them, and only come to them when we need something or when we are in trouble. No matter what, parents will always be there and give everything they could to make you happy. You may think that the boy is cruel to the tree but that"s how all of us are treating our parents.
