　　IPK是1879年制造的三个圆柱体之一。1883年，IPK的质量被发现跟八十四年前的档案局千克的一致，并在1899年的第一届国际度量衡大会中被正式指定为千克。维也纳标准海水（有严格同位素控制的纯净水）密度的现代测量指出一立方分米的水，在最大密度时（3.984°C）比一千克只差25.05ppm。这个微小的差别，与IPK跟档案局千克质量一致这个事实，说明了超过209年前科学家们在量度水密度及制造档案局千克的技艺是相当高超的。 　　需要指出的是，没有一个复制品的质量准确地等于IPK；它们的质量经过校准，得出的偏差值会被存盘。比方说，美国的国家首席标准K20，1889年最初的正式质量为1 kg-39μg；也就是说K20比IPK轻39 μg。1999年的上一次核准指出其质量准确地等于1889年的原值。跟这种小差异相当不同的是，美国的检核标准，K4的质量持续地相对于IPK下降——这都是有原因的。检核标准比首席标准要常用得多，所以很容易被刮及受到各种磨损。K4最初送抵时的正式质量为1 kg-75 μg，但到1989年经正式校准后质量为1 kg-106 μg，而十年后则是1 kg-116 μg。在这110年间，K4相对于IPK轻了41 μg。
