我说，让我们看看明天晚上有没有办法整他。于是第二天晚上我们特别把话题拐到魔法。Gell-Mann说，你们知道James一世在1623年写的Malleus Maleficarum吗？ 不对，Murray，Malleus 有一次我和Gell-Mann和Feynman一起聊起我们收到的古怪的电话和信件。Feynman提到说，有一次他收到一个女士打到他办公室的电话，向他阐述一个荒谬至极的电磁理论。Feynman说，他想了各种办法也不能说服那位女士挂断电话。Gell-Mann说，哦，我想起那位女士了，她给我也打过电话，不过我没用半分钟就把她搞定了。“你是怎么做到的？”Feynman问。“我只不过过跟她说，你最好去找Feynman，他是我们这儿这个领域的专家！” 标 题: Feynman的传说(4) 脑袋有包 -------- 1984年初的时候，Feynman和MIT的Gerald Sussman一起在Caltech教一门有关计算的课程。有一次Feynman在黑板前讲课，Sussman要不时地纠正他的错误。那个礼拜周末我们请Feynman吃饭，他妻子打电话来说Feynman住院来不了了。事情的起因是Feynman在去买新计算机的路上，兴奋过度，在人行道上滑倒，重重地磕在了马路牙子上。当时他的头受了震荡，还有点淤血。事故发生后Feynman没怎么在意，流着血去铺子买了电脑。不过这以后他开始渐渐地失去一些感觉。首先是他想不起把车子停在哪儿了。然后有一天他跟他的秘书Helen Tuck说他要回家了，接着就在办公室里脱衣服躺下来睡觉。他想不起来他要去Hughs公司做一场报告……等等。事后Feynman抱怨说，在我不正常的那段日子里，为什么没有人来提醒我？我跟他说，哦，因为你平时总是举止奇怪，大家早就习以为常了——再说，天才和变态本来就很难区分。Feynman叫道，听着！你这个类人猿！下回我再变态的时候你可一定要告诉我！ 标 题: Feynman的传说(5) 有一次Feynman和我一起听一个特邀教授的报告。我们早去了一会，就选了前排坐下。Feynman注意到讲演者把一个笔记本放在了他旁边的座位上，就拿起来翻阅，边看边记在心里。随后他把笔记本放回原处。不一会讲演者来了，开始报告。讲到中间一个关键处时，那个教授说，我花了很长的时间精力才导出这个公式…… Feynman插道，啊~~~这个解是显然的嘛！不就是……那个教授，以及台下的听众，都被Feynman震住了。报告结束之后，我向Feynman送了一个会心的微笑，他很快还了我一个鬼脸。 标 题: Feynman的传说(6) 我有时候和Feynman一起外出野营。一般Feynman会开着他的大卡车，车身画满了Feynman图，车牌上写着Quantum（量子）（Murray Feynman的传说(7) 若干年以前，我被邀请参加一个奇怪但是有趣的聚会。会上杂七杂八三教九流云集。会间，一个极其丰满的女人走到我跟前自我介绍，说她是一个三级影星，名叫Candi Samples。她听说我是研究物理的，马上问我认不认识一个叫Dick Feynman的。是的，我认识，我回答道。。。我必须承认当时我非常惊讶，因为我不能想象Feynman和眼前这个女人联系在一起。那个女的接着说，Dick是我的狂热影迷之一。。。几天后我见到Feynman的时候问他，是不是认识一个叫Candi Samples的。Feynman马上露出笑容，然后从他的大保险柜里（我原来一直以为里面装满了他最重要的科研成果）很快翻出一张大个的黑白裸照，正是Candi Samples。照片上还写着：To Big Dick, Love From Candi! 标 题: Feynman的传说(8) Penrose和Feynman ---------------- 不久前我在牛津讲学，有幸与著名物理学家、数学家Penrose共进午餐。Penrose以其关于黑洞的工作闻名天下。Penrose给我讲了下面这个关于Feynman的故事。一次 Penrose和Hawking一起访问Caltech，Hawking问Penrose是否想见Caltech的什么人。两个显然的选项是Feynman和Gell-Mann。Penrose提出要见见Feynman，于是Hawking打电话给Feynman安排一次会面。当时Feynman正在家里休假，所以有点不太情愿，不过第二天还是如期而至。两人讨论的主要话题是量子引力，互相争论得不可开交。Penrose回忆说，Feynman实在是太快了，他通常都比我超前五步。有的时候他根本不听我在讲什么。跟他说话实在是太累了！我以前从来没有碰到过反应这么快的人！讨论结束的时候我已经彻底虚脱了。。。Penrose和其他一些物理学家不知道的是，Feynman之所以在很多领域都反应奇快，其实是因为这些问题他多少都在以前想过了。像量子引力这样的问题，Feynman不知道在上面花过多少个不眠之夜呢。 标 题: Feynman的传说(9) 一次报告会上，一个学生问Feynman：您认为是否有朝一日我们可以把全部的物理浓缩到一个公式中？ Feynman：当然，这个公式是（在黑板上写） *F* = 0 学生：式子里的*F*是什么？ Feynman：*F*是伟大的Feynman函数，它的定义是 *F* = (作用力-反作用力)^2 + (F-ma)^2 + (div B)^2 + ... 注：x^2代表x的平方。 标 题: Feynman的传说(10) 1960年初类星体刚被发现的时候，著名的天文学家Fred Hoyle做了一个报告，说类星体很可能是特大质量的星星。Feynman（当时已经是著名的量子理论权威，但在引力方面还不知名）马上站起来说，不可能，那样的一个东东在引力上是不稳定的。事实上，Feynman在几年之前自己搞出了一套有关特大质量星体的理论，给出了基于广义相对论的严格结论。Feynman的这项工作有上百页，但是他从未发表，也很少跟别人说起，只是为了自娱自乐。 注：Hoyle受过Hawking类似的打击。Hoyle一次讲宇宙膨胀问题，Hawking（那时还 是博士生）站起来说Hoyle的猜想是错的，因为他“已经求出了方程的严格解”。 ---------- 这里我借机再讲一个稍有不同的故事。Dirac讲量子力学的角动量理论，下面Weyl 站起来说，您这是在讲群表示论。Dirac说，我不知道什么是群表示论，照样能讲量子力学。 又注：无独有偶。王竹溪一次讲统计力学，下面钱敏站起来说，您这是在讲随机过程。王竹溪说，我不知道什么是随机过程，照样能讲统计力学。标 题: Feynman的传说(11) 1984年，Feynman在Caltech聆听了James Amazing Randi的一场报告。Randi是一个知名的魔术师，曾多次拆穿假冒特异功能的表演。那次报告会上，Randi表演了一个魔术：他看着一张报纸，然后念出密封在信封里的纸条上的字。第二天晚上Randi和Feynman在我家吃晚饭，我们一晚上聊得非常愉快。差不多到了凌晨1:30，Randi和Feynman仍毫无倦意。Feynman于是决定要分析出Randi的把戏是怎么玩的。Randi说，不，这不可能，你没有足够的信息！Feynman说，这是什么话？物理学家从来都没有足够的信息。然后Feynman开始茫然地盯着半空，一步一步地进行推理，并一步一步地告诉Randi，你一定是怎么怎么干的。。。Randi躺倒在椅子上大叫，你那个瑞典的奖（指Nobel）果然不是白得的！Feynman得意地狂笑连连。后来，Randi又一次到Caltech，和我们一起吃午饭。这回他给Feynman表演了一个纸牌的魔术。Randi说，我特意在表演的时候加进了一些误导你的把戏。Feynman根本没理他，不出三分钟就破解了这个戏法。Randi失落地向Feynman发誓，你这辈子都别想让我再给你变戏法了。 标 题: Feynman的传说(12) Feynman不喜欢的一类人是笨蛋，尤其是有一定学问的笨蛋。Feynman对那些理解力较差的人总是很宽容，但对那些拒绝思考问题的人却一向很冷漠。一次我的一个物理学家朋友Ron Unz问我他能不能见见他心目中的英雄Feynman。Ron得过很多荣誉：西屋科学奖、哈佛和剑桥的学位，而且还当过Hawking的研究生。Ron搞出一套反传统的电荷不守恒的理论，还在Physics Review上发了文章。Ron很想跟Feynman讨论这个问题，于是我帮他安排了一次会面。那天Ron很不幸地穿了一件正规西服，这给Feynman留下了不好的印象。然后我又犯了一个错误。我跟Feynman谈起Ron的理论，Feynman马上大叫着拒绝和这么笨的人说话。在我的一再坚持下，Feynman很不情愿地和Ron见了面。两个人说了没有五分钟，Feynman就问，好吧，你那个弱智的理论是怎么回事？Ron很自信地给Feynman阐述。Feynman不断地打断，你有没有想过这个。。。？你有没有考虑过那个。。。？ Ron无一例外地回答，没有。。。没有。。我必须说，我从来没有见过 Feynman这么不留情面的大屠杀。这是个悲剧。 标 题: Feynman的传说(13) Feynman的自传Surely You"re Joking, Mr. Feynman出版后不久，我遇到 Gell-Mann。Gell-Mann跟我说，他对书中关于他和Feynman一起建立Beta衰变理论那一段很不高兴，他觉得Feynman给了他不公正的描述。当天中午我和Feynman一起吃中饭。本来气氛很轻松愉快，但是当我跟他说起Gell-Mann的感受时，Feynman的笑容马上消失了。Feynman说，你知道，我写Gell-Mann时花了很多心思，费了很大力气，我真的非常小心。。。随后不久，Feynman把有关Gell-Mann的一段重写了一遍，直到Gell-Mann满意为止。 标 题: Feynman的传说(14) 英国的大数学家G.H.Hardy(1877-1947)有一天去医院探望他的朋友，印度天才数学家S.A.Ramanujan(1887-1920)。Hardy 的汽车号是1729。他向Ramanujan说，这个数目没有意思。Ramanujan说，不然，这是可以用两种不同方法写为2个立方之和的最小的数，如 3 3 3 3 1729 = 1 + 12 = 9 + 10 这结果可用椭圆曲线论来证明。 一次party上，一个数学家问Feynman，你对数字有没有兴趣？Feynman说，有一点。那个数学家问，那你能不能看出1729这个数有什么性质？Feynman 曾经听说过Ramanujan的那个故事，但是装作什么都不知道，做冥思苦想状，一通抓耳挠腮。五分钟后，Feynman说，它好像是能用两种不同方法写为两个立方之和的最小整数！数学家晕厥。。。 标 题: Feynman的传说(15) 战斗的物理学家 ------------ Feynman还在Cornell做教授的时候，曾受聘于Buffalo的航天实验室，每个礼拜去做一次讲座。一次Feynman想给自己到Buffalo的旅途增加点刺激，就半道拐进了一个叫Alibi Room的酒吧。Feynman很快喜欢上了那个地方，不久就成了那儿的常客。有一天他在那儿的洗手间里撞上一个醉汉。Feynman一进门，那个醉汉说，我不喜欢你这张脸。Feynman说，滚。。。突然，那个醉汉对着Feynman迎面就是一记重拳。没等他反应过来，Feynman立即用同等力量还了一拳！醉汉马上瘫软，灰溜溜地跑了。不过故事还没有完。Feynman从洗手间出来，觉得意犹未尽，就又坐下来要了一杯可乐。不一会，那个醉汉（事后知道他叫Curly）带着一帮同伙卷土重来，并提出要跟Feynman决一死战。Feynman毫无怯意，针锋相对。Curly的同伙见状逐一撤退。Curly怒火中烧，Feynman觉得只能用拳头说话了。这时Feynman一个朋友进了酒吧，向他引见Curly。一通寒暄之后， Feynman找个机会溜掉了。 Richard Feynman：物理学家、鼓手、撬锁专家、拳击手。 标 题: Feynman的传说(16) 二战期间Feynman应召入伍参加Los Alamos的原子弹研究。战后，按照规定， Feynman需要做一次体格检查。Feynman很快通过了大多数的检查项目：视力、听力等等，但是接下来他碰到了他平生最恨的检查：心理测试。心理医生跟Feynman聊了大概25分钟，然后不得不叫进来另外一个心理医生。在做测试的时候，Feynman没有直接回答他们的问题，而是信口胡说，有时候还故意蠢话连篇。第二个心理医生和Feynman谈话完毕后，Feynman发现自己的体格表上，被印了一个大大的红颜色的“不合格”。 标 题: Feynman的传说(17) 年轻的Feynman ------------- Feynman小时候的朋友回忆起他的时候，评价不是“Most Intelligent”，而是“Mad Genius”。上中学的时候，Feynman自己建了一个化学实验室，包括各种化学仪器和药品。可惜，他的实验室最后被邻居家几个坏小孩烧掉了。化学不成，Feynman的兴趣开始转向数学。Feynman最喜欢的是参加纽约高中的数学比赛，而且一直成绩不错。15岁的时候，Feynman熟练掌握了三角和微积分，接下来又学会了圆锥曲线和复数。他上大学四年级的时候获得了纽约大学生数学比赛的冠军。又有谁能相信这么一个才华横溢的天才，参加学校智商测试的时候竟然只得了125分呢？ 注：Armstrong，登月第一人。 标 题: Feynman的传说(19) Feynman年轻时在原子弹基地工作。该基地只有一个大门，有专人把守，出入都需证件。大门之外，另有一处矮墙可以翻过，基地里的小孩都知道。一天Feynman成心想戏弄一下那里的警卫，就从正门进去，飞快地跑到矮墙出翻出，再从正门进去。重复三次。那警卫只见Feynman进却不见Feynman出，大惑不解。 标 题: Feynman的传说(20) Feynman: 行星为什么会绕着太阳转呢？Kepler以及和他同时代的一些人认为，行星后面的隐藏的天使扇着翅膀，努力地推着它们绕太阳环行。当然，他们的理论是错误的，不过和事实也差不太多。事实是天使坐在行星外面，把行星向里（朝向太阳的方向）推。。。 标 题: Feynman的传说(21) Feynman在斯德哥尔摩领取Nobel奖期间，参加了由当地学生组织的一次聚会。在聚会中学生们授给每个Nobel奖获得者一枚“青蛙勋章”，并且要求获奖者学青蛙叫。碰巧Feynman正好知道怎么发出青蛙的叫声，因为他还是个孩子的时候就看过了父亲拷贝的Aristophanes编的《青蛙》一剧。在剧中，Aristophanes讲青蛙总是发出“布雷克贝克”的叫声。 Feynman认为这个发音很古怪，但他试着练了练这个发音后，才发觉这听起来真的像青蛙叫。这个未曾忘记的能耐竟在斯德哥尔摩派上了用场。 标 题: Feynman的传说(22) 1959至1960年，Feynman有权享受一个休假年，他就用它来在加州理工从事DNA的研究。虽未做出什么重要的贡献，但他学会了很多东西，而且有幸结识了这一领域许多出色的研究者。不过，他搞生物学的这一年中最高兴的一件事却是做助教。他教生物系一年级学生的专业课实用技术基础，再加上数学和统计学，而学生们不知道Dick Feynman是谁。这个学年末，学生们把他评为所遇到过的最好的助教。 这一年中，他对科学所做的最值得纪念的贡献是，他在1959年12月底在美国物理学会年会上做的报告，“There"s Plenty Room At The Bottom”。直到今天，它仍被认为是对原子和分子尺度上的工程—— 纳米技术的可行性的第一次清楚的陈述。 标 题: Feynman的传说(23) 1945年初，Feynman生活中的很多要素都到了危机的关头。曼哈顿工程本身已接近完成。与此同时，维持Arline住院的费用开始成问题了。Feynman在1945年4月24日写给“最亲爱的Putzie”的信中，清楚地说明了他们的经济状况。他每月的收入是300美元，为了应付他自己最俭省的花费和Arline在医院的账单，他们每月还需要300美元，而这只好取用Arline的存款，当时存款只剩下3300美元了。就是这样他们也只能再维持10个月，于是Feynman 问到是否到了“该卖掉戒指和钢琴的时候了。”他自己也表示要回食堂吃饭，这样每月能省15美元。Arline变得消瘦了，事实上Feynman已不可能再奢望他能维持到花完这点存款。 Arline死后，Feynman给她写了最后一封信。这封信他从没给任何人看过，直到他本人去世后，才在他的遗物中发现了它。Feynman在信中告诉Arline，他是多么地爱她，没有她，生活是多么的空虚。他在信末加了句令人心碎的“又及”：“请原谅我没有发出这封信——只因为我不知道你的新地址。” 标 题: Feynman的传说(24) Feynman刚发明Feynman图的时候，正处在个人能力的顶点。这种特殊的技术深深打动了Dyson；也深深地打动了Feynman自己。事情发生在1949年1月美国物理学会的会议上。会上，一位叫Slotnick的物理学家给出了描述电子从中子上反弹的方式的一些新结果。他是用老方法计算的，花了好几个月时间。Feynman错过了这个报告，但一位同事告诉了他。他问Slotnick是如何处理这个问题的，于是他认为检验他的理论的这个机会“来得正好”，看两种方法是否能给出相同的答案。在他的Nobel奖获奖演说中，Feynman讲了那天晚上他是如何解决了这个问题，又于第二天如何找到Slotnick告诉其结果。当时，听完Feynman的话后，Slotnick说：“你说你昨天晚上算了出来是什么意思？它可花了我6个月！” 标 题: Feynman的传说(25) Feynman获得Nobel奖后，为了证明他还是原来的Feynman，他与Weisskopf 打了一个赌：如果在10年之内Feynman先生已担任要职，那他就付给Weisskopf 10美元；否则Weisskopf输给他10美元。“要职”的定义是：居于其位的人不得不指导其他人做某一确定的事情，而实际上，究竟是要指导那些人做什么事情，这个在位者本人并不真正明白。 1976年，Feynman从Weisskopf那儿赢了10美元，而且他终生也未担任过什么要职。 标 题: Feynman的传说(26) Feynman在MIT念书的时候，修习了Stratton教授的课。Stratton是一名精通业务的年轻物理学家，后来还当上了MIT的校长，但有时他没有认真仔细地备好课。每当讲课中他讲不下去时，他就会转向听众问：“Feynman先生，你是如何处理这个问题的？”，此时Feynman就会接替他把课讲完。很多年后Feynman的同学Welton回忆道，“Stratton从不把讲课的事委托给我或是其他任何学生。” 标 题: Feynman的传说(27) Feynman在Cornell时，作为一个年轻、英俊、富有魅力而性格外向的教授，在与女士们的交往中无往不利。到20世纪40年代后期，他已得了个怜香惜玉的名声。这一点在事后看来，应该算是对他失去Arline的一种补偿。他最成功的消遣之一是冒充学生到学生联合会去闲荡，喝喝咖啡，帮帮那些在物理作业中有困难的漂漂美眉。 一次Feynman企图对一个mm故伎重施，而她却说：“我知道你是谁，你不是学生，你是Dick Feynman。”于是Feynman决定离开Cornell。 标 题: Feynman的传说(28) Feynman从不对学生做出让步。他以同样的方式对待每一个人。在Los Alamos当他还是个年轻人的时候，如果年长的Bethe犯了个错误，他也会毫不犹豫地说他是个白痴。而他成了资深科学家之后，如果他的学生（或其他任何人）犯了一个错误，他同样会毫不犹豫地说他是个傻子。不偏不倚，他对自己的确也是这样的，他经常把自己的错误说成是愚蠢或笨拙的错误。但对研究生来说，遇到导师这样的批评就很难应付。加州理工学院的一名后来在相对论领域中取得重要成就的学生Kip Thorne说，年轻的研究人员在做学术报告时，只要发现Feynman坐在听众席上，那他就会害怕。尽管让Feynman直率地指出你的论证中的不足很痛苦，但出于一个重要的理由，他总是受欢迎的。因为Feynman总是对的，他能比其他人更快地看出论证中的错误。如果他说论证中有个错误，那就是有；如果确实有错误，当然还是由他指出来更好些，否则，当你把错误发表在刊物上后，就会让全世界的人来看你这个真正的白痴。在加州理工学院做报告时要特别注意你的衣着，因为Feynman对于制服和权威的厌恶，会使他对那些想抬高身份的人给以更强烈的攻击。“如果来演讲的人西装革履，那他将得不到同情。” 注：Kip Thorne现在是加州理工的Feynman教授。 标 题: Feynman的传说(29) Feynman在Los Alamos理论部时，是解决麻烦问题的好手，人称“万能博士”。 由于他总是对机械的东西着迷，花了很多时间来修理计算机的机械部件（改进加法器）和打字机，直到Bethe认为这是对他才能的一种浪费而命令他停下来为止。后来，工程中订了一种新型计算机，货从IBM装成很多箱子运来。Feynman和一个同事把零件从箱中取出来并组装成一台台机器。一周后，IBM专门选派来组装并照看机器的一位工程师到了这里，他对Bethe讲，他以前从没见过非专业人员能把机器组装起来而且运行得这么好。 标 题: Feynman的传说(30) 1988年2月1日，Feynman给学生上了他的最后一次量子色动力学课，课后接受了 Christopher Sykes的采访。两天后，Feynman衰弱的身体的新的检查结果出来了：他剩下的那只肾正在衰竭，而且癌症也复发了。他的生命只能靠透析来延长了，而且他的癌症复发会在几个星期或是数月之内导致他疼痛至死。 Feynman觉得拖延痛苦没有任何意义，决定勇敢地面对死亡。剩下的几天里， Feynman由他的妻子和姨表妹看护。在他陷入因肾衰竭而导致的不可避免的昏迷之 前，他向默顿医生道歉说，“对不起，我要死在你的手里了。”在他昏迷之后，他曾短暂地醒来过一次，并说道：“死的过程真烦人”。这是他的临终遗言。 1988年2月15日晚10点34分，Feynman逝世。

费曼学习法是诺贝尔得主费曼在教学时，提倡的学习方法。与很多教授上课晦涩的言论不同，费曼的教学以轻松易懂闻名于世。该方法的核心思想可以用四个字概括：以教为学。通过教导别人，促进自己对于知识的理解。新学一个概念，通常在大脑里的神经联结并不牢固，像一堆被泥浆随意拼凑的围墙，随着时间推移很容易遗忘，围墙坍塌。常见的加固方式是反复阅读或者用手抄写。但据科学家证明，通过这些方式记忆的效果远不如“自己生成”的好，即所谓的生成效应。以费曼学习法是基于“生成效应”：通过复述材料发现知识阻塞，并在与“学生”的互动过程中，加深对知识点的了解和掌握，从而达到较好的学习效果。操作方法如下：学到新概念或一道题目把自己想象成老师，此刻正在教一名小白用最浅显的语言，讲明白这个概念或者题目大致流程如下：需要注意，费曼学习法不是自圆其说，欺骗自己说懂了。相反，为了说清楚，需要做大量功课，反复阅读相关材料。比如说明物理学的演变，可以从亚里士多德的“四元素论”开始、接着到托勒密“地心说”、再到哥白尼的“日心说”，最后再到牛顿和爱因斯坦的相关理论。此外，利用费曼学习法，很容易陷入“自我证实偏差”的误区——寻找证据，只不过是为了强化“自己的结论”是对的而已。所以，在实操过程中，除了要寻找正面证据，也要去寻找反对者的例证。举个例子，诺贝尔得主写的经典著作《思考快与慢》，提到人的大脑是有两套决策系统——系统1和系统2。系统1像个冲动的小孩，而系统2则是一名理智的大人。许多人都把这套理论奉为圭臬，但是在近些年却有学者发现了问题：按照这套理论，聪明人是不会做傻事的，因为每个利益弊端权衡的一清二楚。但这显然不符合人们日常经验。于是该学者提出了“三重心智加工理论”……总结一下：费曼学习法是基于“生成效应”；核心思想是“以教为学”——把自己想老师，正在教导学生；在实践过程中，需要查阅大量资料，然后用浅显的语言转述出来；为了避免“自我证实偏差”，除了需要正面案例，也要寻找反对的声音。如果觉得很复杂，那还有一个极具操作性的建议：如果你物理很差，那就找一名物理比你还差的女同学，每天给她讲解物理题，假以时日，你的成绩会有质的飞跃。当然，这名女生越漂亮，效果越好。原因你懂的……学习可以很好玩，欢迎来微信公众号：游山玩水90后。
