Home alone
Act one
Mom and Dad arrive back from vacation a day earlier than expected. The curtains are closed and the living room is dark when Mom and Dad enter.
Dad: It’s so nice to be home!
Mom: Yes, I can’t wait to surprise the boys!
Suddenly a door opens and a soccer ball flies through the room. Eric runs in after it, followed by a big dog, walking very slowly.
Eric: Mom! Dad! You’re back early! (looking around room, sounding frightened) But, but--- you weren’t supposed to come home until tomorrow!
The dog slowly walks to Mom and Dad.
Mom: (Bending to touch dog) Eric, he’s so tired and hungry! (looking at table) The money for dog food is gone, but Spot looks like he is starving! What did you do with the cash we left?
Dad: And look at this room— garbage all over the place! Where is your brother? (shouting angrily) Daniel!
Daniel: (running into room) Mom, Dad, I can explain---
Dad opens the curtains and light comes into the room. The room is in a mess, with pizza boxes on the floor and dirty dishes in the sink. In the corner, there is a garbage can around which are pieces of garbage and waste paper.
Mom and Dad both turn towards Daniel. Dad: (sounding very angry) listen to me, young man----we left you in charge? We thought you could act like an adult! I don’t know the reason why the house is so dirty---
Mom: Daniel, we thought you were an adult, a person from whom we could expect good decisions.
Dad: How can we trust you any more? We won’t tolerate such behavior in our house!
Daniel: ( shouting) Stop shouting at me. I’m still a teenager! Why is everything always my fault?
Daniel runs into his bedroom and slams the door. Mom and Dad look at each other as lights go out.
Act two, scene one
Daniel and Eric’s bedroom. Eric sits on his bed. Daniel has his arms crossed and looks upset.
Daniel: They never even gave me a chance to explain. I hate them!
Eric: You don’t hate them. I can tell them we had an emergency. Then they won’t be mad anymore.
Daniel: No, don’t tell them anything. Anyhow they didn’t trust me. They don’t deserve an explanation. Let them think what they want.
Eric: But Daniel, if they knew that Spot was sick and we used the money to take him to the clinic---
Daniel: And that we spent all of yesterday waiting there for him and that is why we had no time to clean the house --- but no, Eric, why didn’t they ask me what happened instead of shouting at me?
Act two, scene two
Mom: Do you think we were too hard on Daniel? Perhaps there is a reason why the house is a mess…
Dad: Maybe, but now that he has been so rude to us, I feel like we have to punish him or he won’t respect us.
Mom: Oh, why does this have to be so difficult?
Mom sigh
End of act two.

Baby's Day Out
Baby, You're A Star Twins Jacob And Adam Worton Swapped Top-billing Duties In "Baby's Day Out." Their Crawling, Drooling And Grinning Have Drawn Rave Reviews. Their Parents Are Trying To Keep Stardom In Perspective.
July 05, 1994|By Joe Logan, INQUIRER STAFF WRITER
NEWARK, Del. — It's rare, in the course of interviewing movie stars about their new film, that one of the actors leans over and smac...ks another in the head, then rips a soggy bagel out of his mouth.
It's simply not done in most proper social settings, even among pampered film actors.
But then, most movie stars aren't Jacob and Adam Worton, the blond, blue- eyed, 19-month-old identical twins who make their acting debuts - actually, their crawling, grinning and drooling debuts - in the new comedy Baby's Day Out.
"WWAAAAAHHH!" is about all Adam had to say on the subject of the film as he banged around the kitchen of his parents' comfortable Newark home one morning last week.
Maybe he merely wanted his bagel back.
Jacob was equally inscrutable, volunteering only something approximating ''YEEEAAARRRRGHHH!" Both young thespians preferred to let their mother, Susan, act as their official spokeswoman.
"We're trying not to make a big deal out of it," she confided. "They're just babies. They don't even know."
Baby's Day Out is the latest offering from producer-screenwriter John Hughes, the man who brought you, among others, Home Alone, Home Alone 2, Sixteen Candles, Uncle Buck and the forthcoming remake of Miracle on 34th Street. As in most of Hughes' movies, Baby's Day Out has children making
bumbling fools of adults.
This time, the plot involves a kidnapping. The Worton boys, who were 6 months old when filming started, take turns playing Baby Bink, multimillionaire scion of a Chicago couple who gets snatched by three goofy goons (Joe Mantegna, Joe Pantoliano and Brian Haley).
But Bink quickly wanders away when one of the kidnappers dozes off, touching off a daylong chase through downtown Chicago department stores, sewer pipes and high-rise construction sites.
The baby-nappers give chase, naturally. The cops chase the baby-nappers, naturally.
Baby's Day Out, which opened Friday, is all in good family fun and is getting pretty good reviews.
Wrote Washington Post film critic Hal Hinson: "Best of all, though, is the Binkman himself, whose tiny face is so expressive that he brings new meaning to the phrase 'conquering with a smile.' "
For the Wortons, it all began a year ago in May when it was announced at Susan's monthly meeting of Mothers of Multiples that a movie-production company in Chicago was looking for young blond, blue-eyed twins, preferably boys. (Production companies prefer twins because of labor laws limiting time on the set for child actors.)

Imagine that you're a villain in a John Hughes film. What do you do? A good bet might be to find someplace safe and secure to hide, especially if you catch sight of any kids under the age of twelve.

Like someone unwilling to venture down an untrodden road, Hughes has yet again come back to the worn-out Home Alone concept, this time substituting a nine-month old toddler for wisecracking Macaulay Culkin. In this cased, however, the baby's smiles and chuckles are more endearing than Culkin's one-liners.

There are three villains instead of two. And while their names aren't Larry, Curly, and Moe, the similarities are neither superficial nor incidental. These Three Stooges (played by Joe Mantegna, Joe Pantoliano, and Brian Haley) are out to make $5 million by kidnapping Baby Bink (Adam and Jacob Worton), the son of the ultra-rich, ultra-chic Benningtons (Lara Flynn Boyle and Matthew Glave). What they didn't count on was their own incompetence and, once the baby slips through their fingers, they're always a crawl behind him.

For someone over the age of ten (or thereabouts), Baby's Day Out has enough slapstick to be amusing - at least for a while. There isn't a scintilla of intellectual humor in the whole movie, and the repeated bashings and burnings received by the hapless villains get tiring after the first hour. There also seem to be an inordinate number of jokes dealing with the crushing, mutilation, or incineration of male reproductive organs.

Young children will also laugh at this film, but there's a question about whether the content is suitable. With Home Alone, most of the damage done to the thugs was relatively minor, at least compared to what happens in Baby's Day Out. This time around, the cartoon mentality is taken to its Wiley Coyote absolute, with the Stooges constantly surviving crippling or should-be-fatal accidents. Somehow, it's more disturbing than funny when it happens to reel people, as opposed to animated creatures.

Other than the slapstick, there's little to recommend this movie. A subplot involving how a status-obsessed mother comes to grips with her missing child is horribly misplaced, and these strains of melodrama are cloying. Whenever Lara Flynn Boyle appears on screen, it's the fervent wish of nearly every member of the audience that the movie turn its attention back to the baby.

Like Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern before them, the trio in Baby's Day Out make amusingly inept crooks. Baby Bink is cute, but that's what little kids are supposed to be, and most of the impressive baby stunts result from ILM's work, not the incredible athletic ability of the Worton boys.

Maybe the worst thing to happen to John Hughes was the success of Home Alone. Since then, with the exception of Only the Lonely (which was already in production by the time Kevin's family left without him), the filmmaker hasn't released a movie with even a spark of originality. Before Culkin, Hughes occasionally came up with something entertaining. Now, he has become redundant and tiresome.

Doubtless, if Baby's Day Out makes money, there will be more of this fare to come. And, with the protagonists getting younger with each new picture, one wonders if the next release of this sort might end up being called Adventures in the Womb.
