tenure-track是非常非常难的，原因在于：1、终身制的教授每个学校都只是有固定人数或者比例的，而且这个数量还在逐渐减少中；2、这个称号也具备一定的社会荣誉，学校在颁发这个职称的时候也会考虑除教授教学和学术能力之外的因素，如道德水平、人际关系等等；

在大学，Tenure-Track或者Tenurable Position是我们通常说的可能性的终身职位(比如，终身教授）。在中国（1988前，我在国内时），大学的每个教授都是全职的，永久的工作（Permanent or Tenured Appointment)。现在，大部分大学的老师（教授）可能是永久的。国外对Tenurre-track的理解是不同的。如果申请的工作是Tenurable，这就是说，你的工作有可能变成“永久”工作，而不是合同工。Tenurable和Contract是一对不同的工种。这就是国内以前所说的永久工（一般是国家人员，吃定量的）和合同工（不吃定量）。这些Tenure-track工作是有国家财政拨款的，而合同工通常是短期的科研费用赞助的。现在，大学为了更好地控制老师的数量，Tenurable职位已经是很少了，一般都是合同工。如果一个学科不兴旺，学校可能取消整个学科，不管你是什么性质的教授，你都可能丢掉你的工作。在西方大学，每个学者都是言论自由的，大学的领导不能炒你鱿鱼的，即使你的学术水平很差。当然，你不能违反了学校的制度，或者犯罪。所以，Tenure-track工作是由学科的需要来决定的。国内现在讨论的Tenure-Track职位是一个“海市蜃楼”的理想极品，而不是根据实际国情来确定。Tenure-Track的体制已经和现代化的教育体制不合拍了，这种“终身”职务就和“金饭碗”、“大锅饭”一样应该废除，而不是盲目引用！
