　　最近一段时间，在国内新闻网站上到处看到有关“皇马”的标题，看得我一头雾水，还以为那是什么马或什么轿车，看了内容才知道原来是西班牙足球队“皇家马德里”的简称。这家球队名称的原文是Real Madrid，其中Real在西班牙文的意思是“属于国王的”，这是1920年西班牙国王赐给这个球队的名称，所以准确的翻译应该是“王家马德里”。西班牙君主的头衔是国王而非皇帝，当然也就只有王家，没有皇家。　　这种在翻译时拔高外国君主的风气，大约是从翻译英文开始的。英国国王虽然建立了“不列颠帝国”(British Empire，常被不准确地译成大英帝国)，但是从未登基当这个帝国的皇帝，而是身兼帝国中各个国家的国王(如果殖民地原为帝国--例如印度--那么也身兼该国的皇帝，但并非不列颠帝国的皇帝)。但是中国人在翻译与英国国王有关的东西时，不把王室叫皇室，不把王宫叫皇宫，却把王家叫皇家，从而有了“皇家学会”、“皇家空军”、“皇家海军”等等错误的译名，让同一个家庭，时而是皇，时而是王，让英王时而登基，时而逊位，实在是有点莫名其妙的。影响所及，欧洲的其他王国，也跟着冒出了皇家，虽然他们连帝国也没有。这些冒牌“皇家”对应的英文Royal本来只有“王”的意思，和皇帝并不沾边。英文并非王、皇不分，表示“皇家”另有一个词叫Imperial。　　这种误译算是长了他人的威风，而有的误译则是为了长自己的志气。例如我们经常见到在美国获得“终身教职”、当上“终身教授”这种说法。此处的“终身”是对英文“tenure”的翻译，而tenure的意思不过是“职务固定，不必再定期签合同”之意，因此所谓“终身教职”、“终身教授”其实是“固定教职”、“固定教授”，并不是让你一辈子当教授。大多数固定教授在退休后，就不能再保有教授的头衔，只有少数杰出的教授，学校允许他们在退休后仍然可算该校教授，一直到死，叫做Emeritus，那才是名副其实的“终身教授”。因为“固定教授”被当成了“终身教授”，推而广之，有人把美国的固定职务都称作终身教授，比如有一位留学生，毕业后在美国联邦储备银行找到了一份工作，成了该银行雇佣的数百名“固定经济师”中的一员。他回国后，就自称是美联储“终身经济学家”，乃至“首席经济学家”，成了中国著名的经济学家。　　类似的一个有意的误译是“院士”。“院士”在中国是个无比崇高的头衔，是academician的翻译。但在英美，反而很少用academician一词，美国科学院 “院士”叫做member(成员)，英国王家学会“院士”叫做fellow(专业会员)，都不是特别的称呼。英美还有无数专业学会、甚至是只要交了会费就可以加入的群众性协会的会员也叫member或fellow，于是就有许多中国人在加入这些组织之后，自称是外国院士了，最常见的是“纽约科学院院士”、 “IEEE(电气和电子工程师学会)院士”。由于在中国“院士”只指中国科学院、工程院的成员，其他专业学会、群众性组织的成员并不被叫做“院士”，因此如果不是外国国家科学院、工程院的成员而称“院士”，都应该算是有意拔高自己的误译。　　有的误译，则是错得有些莫名其妙。大家都知道英国伦敦有一条河叫泰晤士河，有一份老牌报纸叫《泰晤士报》。一般人大概会以为这份报纸是用这条河取的名字。其实，它的英文原名为Times，意思是《时报》，和泰晤士河(Thames)没有任何关系，拼法不同，读音也有异。《时报》成了《泰晤士报》，大概是某个老眼昏花、发音又不准的早期译者张冠李戴所致。《时报》本是英文报纸常用的名字，著名的还有《纽约时报》、《洛杉矶时报》、《华盛顿时报》等等，幸亏这些城市没有泰晤士河，这些报纸才没有被改了名称。纽约市中心有个Times Square，以庆祝新年的聚会闻名世界，译成“时代广场”似乎名正言顺。中国各地也跟着冒出了许多“时代广场”。很长一段时间我也人云亦云跟着叫“时代广场”。后来才知道，该广场的得名，乃是因为1904年《纽约时报》在这里建总部大楼，和新年聚会没有关系，准确的译名该是“时报广场”。　　还有的误译，则是由于缺乏专业知识而想当然，在科技翻译中最为常见。　　例如，近年来“基因学”、“基因学家”之类的用语时见报端，这显然是对英文genetics(遗传学)一词的误译。genetics的前半部分包含了 gene，容易让人望文生义地误以为它是从“gene”(基因)一词演变而来的，而事实上它和“gene”毫无关系。“genetics”一词是在 1902年由英国遗传学家贝特森发明的，其词根是希腊文genesis，原意为“起源”，引申为“出生、传代”，也即遗传。而“gene”(基因)一词则是7年后(1909年)才由丹麦遗传学家约翰逊发明的，其词根是希腊文gen，为表示“产生”的后缀。从学科范围看，也不能把“genetics”译成基因学，因为遗传学并不仅仅研究基因，特别是在分子水平上，有大量的研究与基因没有关系。　　这些常见的名词误译，有的沿用已久，成了历史遗留问题，改起来很不容易，采用正确的译名，反而会让人误以为是无知。对新出现不久的误译，还是应该尽量加以改正的好，免得以讹传讹，成了新的难以解决的历史遗留问题。特别是对那些为了拔高自己误导读者而有意误译的，更应该加以揭露。　　2003.8.6.
