anumberof与thenumberof，二者的区别涉及到主谓一致的问题，它们修饰名词作主语时，谓语的数是不一样的。①numberof+名词复数=alotof=losof+名词复数②anumberof…意思是“一些，若干”(=some)，后接可数名词复数或代词，谓语动词用复数形式。还可以加入形容词表示数量大或小等(例如：alarge/smallnumberof…许多/少数……)。anumberofstudentsofourschoolhavereadthatmagazine.我们学校有很多学生都看过那本杂志。③thenumberof…意思是“……的数字/数目”，介词of同其后名词构成介词短语，修饰thenumber.当它作主语时，谓语动词用单数。例如：manypeopletookpartin10,000-metrerace,butonlyanumberofthemkeptonrunningtotheend.许多人参加了10000米跑，但只有一些人坚持跑到底。

1）、an amount of通常与不可数、无生命的名词连用。如： She spent a very large amount of money yesterday. 她昨天花了好大一笔钱。 2）、a number of 与可数、有生命或无生命的名词连用。如： The president has made a large number of mistakes. 总统已犯了许多错误。 3）、a quantity of通常与可数或不可数、无生命的名词连用。如： A vast / large quantity of imported beer has been sold. 已经售出了大量的进口啤酒。 再者，从上面的例句可知，amount, number和quantity的前面经常使用vast, large, small 等表示数量大小的形容词来修饰，而这些形容词前面有时还会使用very等程度副词来修饰。不过，要特别注意的是，在这些用法中，large不可用big 来替代。
