虽然郝思嘉最终成为了事业上的强者，在恋爱婚姻上，她的命运却非常坎坷：她结婚三次，都无爱情可言，正当青春年华，却两次做了寡妇。第三个丈夫给她带来了财富和深情，又因为没有珍惜而失去。争强好胜的郝思嘉直到28岁孤身一人时才懂得人生的真谛。
郝思嘉的爱常常是错位的。她一直认为自己深爱的卫希礼，不仅碌碌无为，而且并不爱她；郝思嘉14岁那年，卫希礼从欧洲留学回来，卫希礼的朦胧的充满笑意的灰色的眼睛，像音乐似的声音，深沉的性格，对人淡淡的的不即不离的态度都使她着了迷。诗意的初恋往往刻骨铭心，影响终身，这就为郝思嘉执着追求卫希礼埋下了伏笔。她对卫希礼并不了解，惟其不了解，才有一种引起好奇的神秘性，就像一重没有锁也没有钥匙的门。郝思嘉“天真得像火，像风，像野生的东西”，她总是坦率地向卫希礼表白爱情，无所顾忌地一再要和他私奔。该怎么分析郝思嘉的的感情呢？她的内心似乎不能容忍半点怀疑，她不能刻意掩饰内心任何真实的想法，因为那对她意味着莫大的痛苦。正是由于这一点，从她确信自己爱上了卫希礼之后，不管周遭出现了如何的困扰，不管他们隔了多远的距离，甚至他已经娶她人为妻，她都不曾想过就此妥协和放弃。因为这在她看来，是背弃了自己，背弃了自己活着的理由。
所以，郝思嘉对白瑞德始终表现出一种出自内心的抗拒。她一直向往着向母亲一样做一个淑女，因此她才会被卫希里身上的绅士风度吸引，如果说她对艾希利的爱是热烈的、纯洁的、执着的，那么她对白瑞德的勾引则是源于占有，利用和操纵欲，尽管他们曾经约会过，曾经在炮声和战火中共同出生入死，尽管他们其实是如此的相象：一样的自私，一样的为达目的不择手段，就像白瑞德所说，“我们俩太像了，我们都是叛逆者，自私、狡猾、能把事情看透，该怎么办就怎么办，绝不虚伪。只要有利可图，可以不择手段，名誉是一文不值的。”然而，郝思嘉却对这一切视而不见，始终不知道自己内心的真正所爱。
由于郝思嘉对这段感情的长久漠视，也因为白瑞德不适当的冷嘲热讽和谨慎怯懦，这段真爱终因营养不良而日渐凋萎，回天乏力。是郝思嘉的盲目执着，也是他们彼此性格的缺陷共同导致了感情的破裂。郝思嘉争强、好胜，即使在爱情中也有很强的控制欲。而白瑞德则不能勇敢地表白爱情，用他自己的说法，就是，对郝斯佳的表白会变成她手里的皮鞭，用来无情的抽打他。而这，其实也正是白瑞德对自己怯懦性格的掩饰之辞。女人需要男人的表白和许诺，哪怕是虚情假意的。白瑞德却反其道而行之，在与郝斯佳交往中，不断强调自己的独身主义，来掩盖对郝斯佳的真实感情。甚至结婚后，也妄想仅仅通过金钱、物欲的刺激来笼络郝斯佳的心。而这显然适得其反。于是在郝思嘉的眼中，她始终斗不过他，他总是那么冷静，那么深不可测，她永远猜不透他在想什么；而在白瑞德的心里却是：为什么所有的人都知道我想要的是什么只有她不明白？影片结尾处，白瑞德久历人世沧桑后发自肺腑的叹息萦人心怀：他爱郝思嘉，最了解她的强处和缺点，然而，他在人生路上已走得太疲劳、太乏味了。他就像一个长跑运动员，在抵达终点的最后关头，却选择了放弃。而此时的郝思嘉却突然明白她丢掉的灵魂不是卫希礼，而是白瑞德，她才开始明白，瑞德才是她的真爱，才是与她心有灵犀的人，她苦苦追求冥想着的爱情，殊不知一生的真爱一直就在身边。面对白瑞德的离去，她想留住他，可又是那么地无可奈何、力不从心。盲目的追求虚幻的人，却不懂得珍惜真实的情感，郝思嘉的悲剧就在于此。假如白瑞德不曾离去，《飘》就不会成为经典。
