您好,head 和 president 通常是可以互换的,但的确有细微的区别:
1)head 通常作为【领导;头;首脑】是,指的是有(绝对权力)的人;或是赋有(支配权)的职位,所以 head 的英语解释是 a person in charge of something; a director or leader。
2)president 来自于其动词 preside,而 preside 的前缀是 pre- 表 before;side 是字根,表 sit,所以 preside 就是 sit before 的含义,也就是【主持;主管】的含义,是具有代表性的,但并不是绝对性的;所以 president 通常用在【主持(会议、仪式等)的人;担任(会议等)的主席)】,表示此人代表作某事,但并没有绝对的决定权。比如 president 作为(总统),几乎都是选出来的,仅仅是代表国家在正式场合出现,但有(总统)的国家,也都有(议会),所有的决定都需要(议会)通过,最终由总统签字;只有在特殊情况下总统才有一定的绝对决定权,表示(总统)既然是选出来的,就可以被罢免的。
所以,不论是总统,还是主席,还是院长,或是校长,首领,领导,用到了 president 这个词的时候,通常意味着是被选出来,或是被指派,但并不拥有绝对的决定权利,因为决定权利通常在一群人中,而不在一个人中;而用到了 head 时,通常表示权利掌握在一个人中,在很大程度上有绝对的权力。

the president of a council(被选出来拥有一定权力的主席,后面有议会)
the head of a company(拥有绝对权力的老板)
the president of a company(被选出来拥有一定权力的老板,后面可能有董事会)
the head of school(拥有绝对权力的校长,可能是自己开办的,学校规模小)
the president of a school(可能是被指派的校长,校内有一定的决定权,但不是绝对的。学校规模较大,或是一所大学的学院院长等等)
不过大多数情况下,the president of ... 用的是较多的,也较为正式,所以 head 和 president 的概念就没有分的这么清楚了。

而president是董事长、校长什么的,一般的人不能这么叫。
