That day, my mother poured some glutinous rice out from an earthen jar and used a sieve to sift out chaff.
并很仔细地摘去米中的杂物，
Next, she carefully picked out sundry foreign particles in the rice.
然后将糯米放在水里浸泡。
Then she soaked the rice in water.
那时，我们家的生活很清苦，一年里能吃上一顿糯米饭对我们来说也算是一种奢求。
At that time, our family led a very destitute life and it was a luxury just to eat a meal of glutinous rice once a year.

Mother saw our eagerly desirous expressions and said to us: “Tomorrow is Dragon Boat Festival, and I"ll wrap some zongzi dumplings for you to eat.”

Early in the morning, my father took me to the mountain to cut a big bale of mugwort and bamboo leaves.

Father tied the mugwort neatly into bundles and hung them high up on both sides of our front door.
父亲说：“艾蒿可以祛邪，
He said, “Mugwort can ward off evil spirits.

端午节挂两把艾蒿在大门口，屈原会平平安安，我们也会平平安安。”
Hanging two bundles of mugwort at the front door during Dragon Boat Festival would keep both Qu Yuan and us safe from harm.”
我至今还记得父亲说这些话时那种虔诚的样子。
To this day, I can still remember Father"s earnest manner in speaking those words.
母亲则将那些鲜活的蓼竹叶洗得干干净净，然后将浸泡过的糯米一团一团地用蓼竹叶包裹起来，
Mother washed those fresh bamboo leaves thoroughly clean and used them to wrap lumps of the soaked glutinous rice.
再用白色的棉线捆缠起来，放进了那冒着滚滚热气的蒸笼里。
She then used white threads to tie them up and put them inside a bamboo steamer bubbling with hot vapor.
母亲做完这一切，脸上挂满了平时少有的轻松。
After doing all these, Mother"s face wore a rarely seen relaxed expression.
那天，我们兄妹是在兴奋和好奇中度过的，
All the brothers and sisters in our family passed that day in excitement and curiosity.
也是在父亲和母亲给我们讲述艾蒿和粽子的故事中度过的。
Also stories were told during the day by our parents about mugwort and zongzi dumplings.
或许就是那天，屈原的形象便模糊地走进了我幼小的心灵。
Maybe that was the day when image of Qu Yuan hazily entered my young mind.

The time I could truly appreciate Dragon Boat Festival and how our hometown people felt about the Festival was after I started working in the county.
那年的端午节，不像我在老家只挂艾蒿和吃粽子，
The Festival in that year was unlike the one in my hometown which was only about hanging up mugwort and eating zongzi dumplings.
也不像我原在大山中不断地重复那些古老的故事。
Also it was dissimilar to that in the mountain area when those ancient stories were told over and over again.
那天，归州古城街头巷尾到处都弥漫着艾蒿、粽子的芳香，古城的人们脸上个个都挂满喜庆。
On that day, all over the streets in the Old City of Guizhou the air was permeated with the scents of mugwort/zongzi-dumpling and people"s faces were beaming with joy.
同事告诉我说：“小城的端午节好热闹，比春节还要热闹，
A colleague told me: “Dragon Boat Festival in this small city is lively, and it"s livelier than Chinese New Year.
每年都是这样。”
Every year it"s like this.”
这天屈乡人是怎样一种心情呢？
What would the mood of Qu town people be like on this day?
他们对端午节怎么如此看重呢？
Why do they attach so much importance to Dragon Boat Festival?
我踩着光亮光亮的石板街，抚摸着岁月斑斑的古城墙，让思绪与家乡的历史碰撞。
I stepped on shiny stone-slab pavement, caressed age-speckled wall of Old City, and let my thoughts collide with memories of my hometown"s history.
2000多年前，这片古老的土地诞生了屈原，
Two thousand years ago this land of old gave birth to Qu Yuan.
这位博闻强志、忧国爱国的伟人被世人景仰，
This well-read, strong-willed, and patriotic great man has been revered by our entire nation.
他的《离骚》，他的《天问》，他的不朽诗篇被世人传唱至今，
His “Departure Grievance”, “Heaven, Why”, and other immortal poetry collections have been sung from generation to generation until this day.
作为他的故乡人，能不延续自己的情怀吗？！
As a person from his hometown, how could I not perpetuate my fond sentiment towards him?

古城脚下屈原沱，是一片港湾。
Qu Yuantuo is a cove at the foot of the Old City.
相传这里是屈原别乡去施展抱负的地方，
Legend has it that this was the place where Qu Yuan left to pursue his ambition.
也是屈原含恨投江之后神鱼驮送他回故乡的地方。
After his indignant suicide in the river, allegedly a magic-empowered fish piggybacked his body home and dropped it off here.
屈原满怀抱负而去，遗恨悲壮而归，
Quen Yuan left here with high aspiration and returned with utter devastation.
从此便在这里演绎出一个又一个的传奇故事，传承着一项古老的活动。
From that time onwards, different versions of the legendary story have surfaced from here and are passed on to future generations as ancient tradition.
每逢端午节，不管屈乡人怎么忙碌，他们也一定要放下手中的活计，到屈原沱去凭吊那位古人。
During Dragon Boat Festival, no matter how busy the local people in Qu town are, they drop what they are doing for livelihood and go to Qu Yuantuo to pay tribute to Qu Yuan.
屈原沱的沙滩上，搭起了公祭屈原的祭祀台，
On the beach of Qu Yuantuo, an altar is usually built for offerings to the spirit of Qu Yuan.
“三闾大夫魂兮归来”的挽幛下面，供奉着猪头、羊头和鲜嫩的瓜果，
Below an elegiac scroll with the inscription “San Lu Dai Fu, we ask your spirit to return”, offerings of pig heads, sheep heads and soft, fresh fruits are laid out.
身着白衣的屈乡儿女聚集在祭祀台前，任心灵在江中遨游，在空中飘荡，在屈乡大地升腾。
Qu village boys and girls in white clothes gather in front of the offering altar and set free their spirits to roam in the lake, drift in the air and soar above the Qu village land.
江岸边，手捧粽子的男女老幼，他们将粽子抛向江中，一边向屈原忠魂祈祷：三闾大夫！你的故乡人保护着你；
On the riverside, men and women of all ages with zongzi dumplings in their hands start to throw those dumplings in the river while praying to the staunch spirit of Qu Yuan: “San Lu Dai Fu, your hometown people are protecting you.
三闾大夫你回来吧，
San Lu Dai Fu, please come back.
故乡儿女盼望着你。
Your hometown boys and girls are yearning for you.”
江面上，龙舟赛前的游江仪式紧紧地拨弄着人们的视线，
On the river, the parade ceremony preceding the dragon-boat races dazzles the eyes of spectators.
催战的鼓声，悲壮的呐喊，他们将满怀深情撒满长江。
Under sounds of war drumbeats and stirring clamors, these people pour their heartfelt sentiments all over the Yangtze River.

The song to Qu Yuan goes like this: “Yow Big Brother! Yo Ho, please come back! Hey Ho! Yow, Dai Fu, Dai Fu, listen to my words, yow!
天不可上啊，
You can"t go up to the sky.
上有黑云万里；
Up above, dark clouds cover thousands of miles.
地不可下啊，
You can"t go down underneath the ground.
下有九关八极；
Down below, there are nine barricades and far-away places in eight directions.
东不可往啊，
You can"t go east.
东有旋流无底；
At east there are bottomless whirlpools.
南不可去啊，
You can"t go south.
南有豺狼狐狸；
At south there are wolves and foxes.
西不可向啊，
You can"t go toward west.
西有流沙千里；
At west there is a thousand miles in quicksand.
北不可游啊，
You can"t swim north.
北有冰天雪地。
At north ice and snow are everywhere.
惟愿我大夫，快快回故里！
We only wish our Dai Fu quickly return to your hometown.
衣食无须问，
Here your livelihood is well taken care of.
楚国好天地！
Chu State is a great place.”

秭归的龙舟赛，必须先游江，游江必须高唱《招魂曲》。
The dragon-boat races at Zigui always start with a parade over the river while singing out loud “Call for the Dead” song.
这种传统古老的游江仪式是从何时开始的，是无法考证的，也无须考证，
There is no way to authenticate when this ritual of river-parade started, but there is no need for the authentication.
因为它毕竟穿过了历史，走过了岁月，
The tradition has gone through history and the test of time.
被屈乡人传承到今，
It has been passed on through generations of Qu town folks to the present.
谁也没有忘记它放弃它，
Nobody has forgotten it or given it up.
这是屈乡人的情怀，也是屈乡人的境界。
These are the sentiments and realms of Qu town people.

Every Dragon Boat Festival I get totally enthralled by the scene.
每次我都会被那曲悲壮的《招魂》感动得眼噙泪花。
Each time I am so moved by the solemnly stirring song “Calling for the Dead” that tears well in my eyes.
我常想，屈乡儿女、也包括我自己，为什么对这位作古几千年的先人如此崇敬？
I always try to figure out why the boys and girls of Qu Yuan, including myself, venerate so highly this ancestor who passed away thousands of years ago?
是他满腹文采的学识，是他刚直忠烈的品格，是他忧国爱国的情操，是他坚韧追求的精神？
Is that because of his abundant literary knowledge, his upright plus loyal character, his patriotic righteousness, or his tenacious and goal-pursuing fortitude?
我在想，屈原出生在秭归这片古老的大山之中，
I then think Qu Yuan was born in Zigui—a place amid a series of old mountains.
2000多年前，他满怀壮志，乘一叶扁舟，踏西陵峡中滚滚波涛，
Two thousand and somewhat years ago, he was full of lofty ideals when he rode a small boat across the rolling waves of Xiling Gorge.
走进了他立志为国的那座圣殿。
He entered the royal palace with determination to serve his country.
在奸臣当道，君主昏庸，
However, unscrupulous government officials were in the way and a clueless Emperor was in the helm.
国家即将亡灭的时刻，他深感无回天之力，毅然抱恨投江，以身殉志，义无反顾。
At the moment when the kingdom was heading for destruction and he felt powerless to turn the tide, he resolutely and despairingly cast himself into the river to demonstrate his frustrated will and unregretful mettle.
他的品格，他的情操，他的精神，是否与巍峨的大山、与惊涛骇浪的峡江有关？
Were his demeanor, integrity and spirit somehow connected to the majestic mountains and turbulent gorge-river in the area?
我还想，秭归山大坡陡，经济历来贫穷，
I also think Zigui has big mountains as well as steep slopes, and its economy historically has always been impoverished.
如今却发生了翻天覆地的变化。
Now shocking changes have occurred in this region.
这除了共产党的领导、社会主义制度、改革开放政策之外，是否还有秭归人民传承了那种“路漫漫其修远兮，吾将上下而求索”的坚韧？
Other than the leadership of the Communist Party, the system of socialism, and the policies of transformation plus liberalization, is it possible that the inherent toughness of the people of Zigui is attributable to such factors as described in the saying “The road to the truth is lingering long, but I"ll persevere and search high and low for answer”?

In June 2003, the Three Gorges Construction Project began to store up water.
屈原沱随同归州古城永没江底。
Qu Yuantuo, in following Guizhou Old City, sank to the bottom of the river forever.
屈原沱消失了，秭归人民在巍巍三峡大坝坝上筑起了新城，
With the disappearance of Qu Yuantuo, people of Zigui have built a new city on top of the dam of the towering Three Gorges.
同时，也将湖滨最大的港湾辟为龙舟基地。
They also have converted the biggest bay of the lakes into the base of dragon boats.
港湾与三峡大坝咫尺相望，
The inland bay facing the Three Gorges Dam is a short distance away.
端午这天，《招魂》的呐喊声从港湾跨越平湖，碰撞在三峡大坝上，
On Dragon Boat Festival day, the clamoring sounds of “Call of the Dead” from the inland bay cross the peaceful lake and bounce off the big dam of Three Gorges.
巨大的回声在峡江上空飘荡，然后汇成强烈的呼唤声：“大夫大夫你回来吧！
The loud echoes drift in the sky above the gorge river and then merge into powerful calling noises: “Dai Fu, Dai Fu, would you please return.
回来看我高峡平湖，
Return to see our grandiose gorge and peaceful lakes.

Return to see the beautiful sceneries of your hometown.”

在离归州古城不远的山坡上，有一片郁郁葱葱的桔林，
On a mountain slope not far away from the Old City of Guizhou, there is a patch of lush green tangerine grove.
桔林中掩映着一片仿古建筑。这片仿古建筑便是陆游笔下的“江上荒城猿鸟悲，隔江便是屈原祠”中的屈原祠。
The grove brings out the beauty of an ancient building in contrast, and this building is the Quan Yuan Temple mentioned in Lu You"s poem: “Up the river is a deserted city with mournful sounds of apes and birds. Across the river is Qu Yuan Temple.”
不过，屈原祠原来并不在这里，而是在山脚下长江岸边，
Originally Qu Yuan Temple was not located here but at the foot of a hill on the riverbank of Yangtze River.
因修建葛洲坝水利枢纽工程，始建于宋元丰三年的屈原祠被淹而迁建于此。
In reconstructing the Gezhou Dam Water Conservation Engineering Project, the Qu Yuan Temple built in the third year of Yuan Feng reign during the Song Dynasty was inundated and the temple was rebuilt here.
在祠内有十多名男男女女，
Ten and some odd men and women have stationed inside the temple.
他们一直固守在这里，呵护着这片仿古建筑，也陪伴着屈原大夫的忠魂。
They have been taking care of this ancient building and keeping Qu Yuan Dai Fu"s staunch spirit company.

In 1998, the county town was relocated to the east and all of these town folks—husbands, wives, parents and children—moved with the town.
这群人却留下了。
The people in the temple however stayed behind.
每逢端午，他们总要随着拜谒屈原忠魂的人们在屈原青铜像前默默许上个心愿，
In every Dragon Boat Festival, they always follow what the homage-paying visitors do in quietly making wishes to the bronze statue of Qu Yuan.
在三闾大夫衣冠冢前深深地三鞠躬，
They bow three times in front of the tomb which contains Qu Yuan"s personal belongings.
抚摸着碑刻吟诵《离骚》、《九章》、《天问》，
Then while touching the inscriptions on the stone tablet they recite “Departure Grievance”, “Nine Chapters” and “Heaven, Why”.
跟着年轻姑娘呐喊几声《招魂》曲。
Afterwards young girls sing out loud a few lines of “Call for the Dead” song.
他们把青春留在了这里，也把情感释放在这里。
Here is where they spend their youth and release their feelings.

When I spend Dragon Boat Festival in Qu town, often I am caught in the atmosphere of a different scene.
西陵峡北岸有一条山谷叫七里峡。
At the north shore of Xiling Gorge there is a valley called Seven Mile Gap.
穿过这条山谷，忽然出现一片小盆地，
After passing this valley, suddenly a small basin appears.
小盆地酷似陶渊明笔下的“世外桃源”。
The undersized basin fits the description of Shangri-La by Tao Yuanming.
这就是屈原的诞生地———乐平里。
This is where Qu Yuan was born—Le Pingli.
盆地里流传着有关屈原的种种传说，
In the basin, many legends about Qu Yuan are in circulation.
也延续着一个专颂三闾大夫的诗社———离骚坛诗社。
Also “Departure Grievance Altar Poetry Club”—a poetry club which specializes in extoling San Lu Dai Fu—operates here for a very long time.
因为诗社里都是当地地地道道的农民，所以人们也称它为泥腿子诗社。
Because all members in this poetry club are native farmers, therefore people also call the club “Muddy Feet Poetry Club”.
或许是三闾大夫给了他们灵气，这里的人们喜欢吟诗作赋，
Maybe because the spirit of San Lu Dai Fu blesses them with some intellectual qualities, the people here love to recite and compose poetry.
常出口成章。
They often speak in rhymes and rhythms.
到了端午节，在山坡上的那棵古树下，便聚集着男女老幼，
When Dragon Boat Festival comes, men and women of all ages would gather underneath an old tree on the slope.
他们摇头晃脑，吟诵着他们自作的诗词，抒发着他们的情怀。
They would slowly twirl their heads and recite their self-composed poems to let loose their feelings.
每当此时，无论是“阳春白雪”，还是“下里巴人”，只要走进那种氛围，都会情不自禁地将自己融入其中。
At this time, it doesn"t matter whether it is the highbrow tone “The Spring Snow” or the lowbrow tone “Country Folks” in the air, you only have to walk into the place and naturally you would be immersed in the ambiance.
我曾感受过那种不分高贵三等而只有浓浓诗情的气氛，
I experienced that rich poetic environment provided to a general audience regardless of their social statuses.
也捧读过那散发着泥土芬芳的诗集，
Also I read their poetry collections which gave off sweet scent of earth.
每逢如此，便有一种冲动。
In doing so, I was overwhelmed with excitement every time.
乐平里背靠五指山麓。
Le Pingli has its back against the foot of Wuzhi Mountain.
山脚下，流水潺潺，花果飘香；
At the bottom of that mountain, there are gurgling streams and fragrant-emitting flowers/fruits.
山峰间，云雾缭绕，瑞气呈祥。
Above at mountain peaks, clouds and mists are spiralling slowly upward with telling auspicious signs.
在我神游的视线中，乐平里化作一部史诗在燃烧，在升腾……我用心去感受着。
In the vision of my fantasy, Le Pingli turns into a flaming epic on ascend and I try hard to feel the tone with my heart.
去感受秭归的端午节，去感受屈乡人的情怀。
I also try to feel the atmosphere of Dragon Boat Festival in Zigui and the sentiments of Qu town people.
