电磁炮利用电磁力（洛仑兹力）沿导轨发射炮弹的武器。它主要由能源、加速器、开关三部分组成。能源通常采用可蓄存10～100兆焦耳能量的装置。当前实验用的能源有蓄电池组、磁通压缩装置、单极发电机，其中单极发电机是最有前途的能源。加速器是把电磁能量转换成炮弹动能，使炮弹达到高速的装置。主要有：使用低压直流单极发电机供电的轨道炮加速器和离散或连续线圈结构的同轴同步加速器两大类。开关是接通能源和加速器的装置，能在几毫秒之内把兆安级电流引进加速器中，其中的一种是由两根铜轨和一个可在其中滑动的滑块组成。分类线圈炮线圈炮又称交流同轴线圈炮。它是电磁炮的最早形式，由加速线圈和弹丸线圈构成。根据通电线圈之间磁场的相互作用原理而工作的。加速线圈固定在炮管中，当它通入交变电流时，产生的交变磁场就会在弹丸线圈中产生感应电流。感应电流的磁场与加速线圈电流的磁场互相作用，产生电磁场力，使弹丸加速运动并发射出去。轨道炮轨道炮（Rail Gun）或译磁轨炮、导轨炮由法国人维勒鲁伯于1920年发明，是利用轨道电流间相互作用的安培力把弹丸发射出去。它由两条平行的长直导轨组成，导轨间放置一质量较小的滑块作为弹丸。当两轨接入电源时，强大的电流从一导轨流入，经滑块从另一导轨流回时，在两导轨平面间产生强磁场，通电流的滑块在安培力的作用下，弹丸会以很大的速度（理论上可以到达亚光速)射出，这就是轨道炮的发射原理，轨道炮是电磁炮最常见的式样。电磁炮是利用电磁发射技术制成的一种先进的动能杀伤武器，与传统的大炮将火药燃气压力作用于弹丸不同，电磁炮是利用电磁系统中电磁场的作用力，其作用的时间要长得多，可大大提高弹丸的速度和射程。因而引起了世界各国军事家们的关注。自80年代初期以来，电磁炮在未来武器的发展计划中，已成为越来越重要的部分。电热炮电热炮的原理完全不同于上述两种电磁炮，其结构也有多种形式。最简单的一种是采用一般的炮管，管内设置有接到等离子体燃烧器上的电极，燃烧器安装在炮后膛的末端。当等离子体燃烧器两极间加上高压时，会产生一道电弧，使放在两极间的等离子体生成材料（如聚乙烯）蒸发。蒸发后的材料变成过热的高压等离子体，从而使弹丸加速。重接炮重接炮是一种多级加速的无接触电磁发射装置，没有炮管，但要求弹丸在进入重接炮之前应有一定的初速度。其结构和工作原理是利用两个矩形线圈上下分置，之间有间隙，长方形的“炮弹”在两个矩形线圈产生的磁场中受到强磁场力的作用，穿过间隙在其中加速前进。重接炮是电磁炮的最新发展形式。

开关电源首先经过整流滤波把交流电变成直流电，再通过控制开关管频率或脉冲宽度的方式控制输出电压，在开关变压器次级再通过二次整流滤波得到所需的直流电。
