孔乙己的悲剧根源主要在于以下三个方面。 封建文化和封建教育的毒害使孔乙己自命清高，耻于劳动，而根深蒂固的奴性又使他丧失了与命运抗争的可能性，这就注定了其人生悲剧的必然性。 孔乙己是生活在清朝末年的一位旧知识分子，他所接受的无疑是旧的封建教育。也许正因为这样，他通过接受封建教育而深受封建文化的毒害也就是自然而然的事了。我们知道，自西汉时期的董仲舒提出“独尊儒术，罢黜百家”，继而被汉武帝采纳以来，历代封建统治者也都沿袭了这一做法。儒家文化之所以能获得历代皇帝的青睐，是因为其实质上是可以为维护封建统治服务的。笔者不否认儒家文化在中国古代文化发展进程中的积极作用，但是我们也不得不承认这样一个事实，那就是儒家文化从它沦为维护封建统治的工具的时候起，就已经成为思想的枷锁，就注定要失去其不断发展的基础。无论是偏颇也好，偏激也罢，笔者始终认为处于封建文化核心地位的儒家文化，在很大程度上说，当它作为封建教育的教材时，只是培养奴才的文本。于是，一代又一代读书人成为这种教育的牺牲，他们失却了独立的人格和精神，失却了独立的意识和思想，每一根血管都只剩下粘稠的奴性。然而，奴才只有在能为统治阶级看家护院的时候，才会获取相应的物质条件，实现作“大奴才”的人生理想。于是，当科举制度产生之后，读书人的灵魂就差不多完全腐化了。他们鄙视劳动，自命清高，一旦入仕，就很快堕落成官场上的痞子，成为统治阶级的“恶奴”，就如《孔乙己》中的丁举人之类。正因为这样，“魏晋风骨”就成为少数有骨气的读书人聊以自慰的精神寄托，成为中国文化史上最亮丽的风景。 由于封建文化教育的毒害，孔乙己本来“身材很高大”，是可以像“短衣帮”一样凭体力养活自己的，他却轻视劳动，把那“又脏又破，似乎十多年没有补，也没有洗”的长衫总穿在身上，摆一副读书人的架子。既然它不可能走入仕途，不可能成为统治阶级看家护院的奴才，甚至“连半个秀才也捞不到”，这就注定他会失去生存的基础，他的人生只能是一场悲剧。尤为可叹的是，孔乙己深受毒害而不自觉，麻木不仁，奴性十足。且不说要他去反抗封建制度，就连他自己的命运也不敢、不愿和不能去抗争。这就难怪鲁迅先生要“哀其不幸，怒其不争”了。其实，封建文化对知识分子的毒害，教育并不是唯一的途径。被统治阶级所认同的文化，总会渗透到社会的方方面面，对人们的生活产生直接的影响，而且还会谬种流传，在很长的一段时期内显得根深蒂固，并不会随着一个时代的消亡而消亡。放眼当今社会，我们不难看到孔乙己的影子，至于“丁举人”就不免时常撞见了。看来，要根除封建文化的毒害，让我们这个民族真正甩掉文化糟粕这个包袱，获得发展的无限生机，还有很多事要做，还有很长的路要走。抑或正因如此，不管鲁迅先生创作小说的初衷是什么，其反封建的主题是显而易见的。焦晋同志在《谈〈孔乙己〉主题的广阔性与神话》（载《教学通讯》1984年第二期）里指出，该小说“不仅深刻地揭露和批判了封建科举制度的腐朽性及其罪恶，而且可以延伸到对整个封建制度及其全部伦理道德的彻底否定……”
