其实早在30年代初期美国就有首歌叫做Rock&Roll，但当时并没有这种音乐名称。此一名词出现最被大家认识是DJ- Alan Freed于1951年在他的广播节目中首先使用了『摇滚音乐会』这个名称，据说纽约现今仍尊称他为摇滚乐之王。 而又在比尔亨利-Bill Haley和他组的彗星乐团-His Comets以一曲Rock Around The Rock于55年在排行榜呆了8周之久，在此曲大放异彩的推波助澜下，Rock便为世人所熟知，是故有人称1955年为Rock Era，而比尔亨利也得摇滚之父的雅号。 早期摇滚的音乐来源非常广泛，主要的包括布鲁斯、R&B、和乡村音乐，其它还有福音音乐、传统的流行乐、爵士、以及民间音乐。所有的这些影响加在一起构成了一种简单的以布鲁斯为基础的歌曲结构，它是快速的、适于跳舞的、而且容易让人记住的。第一批摇滚明星们 — Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly, Bo Diddley, Bill Haley, Gene Vincent, the Everly Brothers, Carl Perkins,还有好多其它的明星 — 确立了摇滚乐的模式，并且在以后的四十年内都一直为人们所追随。在每一个十年当中，总是有很多艺人复制着第一批摇滚乐手们的音乐，而剩下的那些艺人，有的扩大了摇滚原先的定义、有的则彻底打破了这种流派被限定的模式。从英式入侵、民间摇滚、迷幻摇滚，再到硬摇滚、重金属、华丽摇滚，再到朋克，事实上每一种摇滚的分支流派在产生的最初都是忠于摇滚最基本的结构的。但是一旦这样的改变发生，传统的摇滚就从流行榜上渐渐消失了 — 当然，也有一些艺人始终都保持着光芒。有一些乐队，比如 the Rolling Stones 和 the Faces,他们始终坚持着传统摇滚最基本的规则，但他们把音乐做得更加快速更加自由。其它的一些乐队，比如原型朋克the Velvet Underground, the New York Dolls, 以及 the Stooges,他们保留了基础的音乐结构，但他们的行为中有了更多威吓性的元素。还有一些艺人成为了摇滚的传统主义者，比如 Dave Edmunds 和 Graham Parker, 他们写的歌出的唱片，从来就没有离开过50年代末60年代初的摇滚模式。虽然在摇滚出现后的这几十年里，摇滚这个词已经开始指代越来越多不同的音乐风格，但是这种音乐的本质从未改变过。 缘于美国的摇滚乐在60年初终于发生了巨变，那就是由The Beatles开始一群英国乐团在一瞬间打进了美国市场，就有人将这件事称为第一次英伦入侵，不过还好当时在美国仍有一些团和他们分庭抗礼，如组合相似披头而曲风充满沙滩、阳光、美女、浪板等加州美景的Beach boys 。此外充满民族曲风的名谣摇滚亦紧接而生，但除了Bob Dylan外，以居尔特或爱尔兰等曲风鲜明的英国歌手亦不乏其中，但在60年代末美国乐团又再次主领大局，那就是以3J(Jim morrison、Jimi Hendrix及Janis Joplin)引领而起的迷幻摇滚成为当时最受欢迎的摇滚乐，不过除了Grateful Dead外大部分的迷幻团都相当早夭，在迷幻摇滚势微后，随即迈入风光的摇滚年代。 经由60年代的铺陈，遂使70年代的摇滚曲风丰富至极，由David Bowie引领而起的华丽摇滚就是在70初蹶起的，此外为了不栯于既有的摇滚类型，前卫摇滚、古典摇滚和艺术摇滚也随即而起并成为当时乐界的新像，既而爵士摇滚亦逐渐扬名，此外横跨整个70~80年代最受欢迎且最长寿的重摇滚（重金属）产生了，或许在现在而言Led Zeppelin、Deep Purple、Black Sabbath的分贝soso，然而在当时可说是震耳欲聋的摇滚类型了，此后经由不断的演进heavy metal一直受摇滚迷的青睐，此外在70年代还有跟HM曲风迥异的乡村摇滚、加州摇滚和南方摇滚亦深受欢迎。假若我们说60年代的盛事是英伦入侵，那70年代的盛事非瞬间窜起于70年代末的庞克摇滚莫属，但就如60年代末的迷幻摇滚般，庞克亦不长命。 进入80年代除了初期仍还有庞克风外，夹着70年代余威的重金属便成为领导地位，且几乎风光的80年代都是由重摇滚(重金属)拢断，但他们仍是求新求变的，风格决不同以往，故又有新浪重金属的称号，在重摇滚的强势下，除了蓝领摇滚、流行摇滚和融合雷鬼曲风的摇滚外，要能闯出一片天就得以技巧取胜，所以一些强调速弹和速度的摇滚遂应运而生，而他们引起的风潮亦不容小觑，至今速金仍然有广大的听众。 接着90年代初期引领摇滚潮流的即是西雅图之声油渍摇滚，但随即被充满电子音乐的英伦摇滚所淹没，而因这些来自英国各地的乐团很快的征服新一代的摇滚迷，故将之称为第二次英伦入侵。此外90年代末期带有庞克风或充满电音的的一些另类摇滚也虏获相当多的歌迷。或许摇滚风潮不在，承如麦克阿瑟所言老兵不死只是凋零，但摇滚新血不断产生，电音、工业、嘻哈...，或许摇滚曲风已不若以往，但至少是另一种摇滚型态的延续。
