"Joe, come on, come on!" Yueqing Middleschool"s Fall Track and Field Meet was hot in action on Oct. 19 and the big-nosed, blue-eyed,grey-track-suit-clad foreign teacher in the 800 meter even became a scene. He finally finished the third, cheered on by students. From New York, US, Joe,34, is the foreign English teacher this semester in Yueqing. During the break, our reporter interviewed him.
Sports and Drinking are His Favorites
"This is my first time to be a teacher in China. I feel pretty good." Joe arrived Yueqing on Aug. 29. He brought with him,in his 4 gigantic pieces of suitcases, over 10 pairs of sneakers and 4 and 5 basket balls among changes of clothes and daily consumables. Joe jokingly said these are his most valuable possessions. In his hometown, Joe was a real estate agent, and also worked as a basketball and baseball coach. Excercise is his must-do everyday. It remained the same after he got to Yueqing. After school, he could be seen playing sports on the schoolyard. During this school meet, he entered events of 400 meter, 800 meter, put-shot, and 4 by 100 meter raley. What a complete demonstration of his ethletic talent.
Although having been in Yueqing for less than two months, Joe has adapted to the life here. He is working very hard on his Chinese now. During our interview, he couldn"t help showing off to our reporter and used his unconventional Chinese to say "thank you, hello, excuse me, how much, and dumplings" etc. The best pronouciation he had was when he said "is there any beer." which showed how much he loves it. He would have some beer with every meal or at gatherings with colleagues, without which his enjoyment would be complete. However, Joe is still not used to the bai-jiu, the hard liquor beloved by Chinese drinkers.
