awkwardness

One of the most dreaded questions that is guaranteed to come up in every interview is "What is your greatest weakness?" Perhaps it"s the interviewer"s way of weeding out candidates to see who is truly prepared to answer this uncomfortable question. Regardless, you can remove some of the awkwardness by prepping for the question and following these rules.

Don"t give a cop-out answer

Please don"t give tired answers like, "My greatest weakness is that I"m too much of a perfectionist/workaholic." Perhaps it is true for you, but unfortunately, it may bring false to the interviewer who is used to hearing these genericanswers that come off as a way to dodgethe question.

Be honest

Dig deep into yourself and figure out what your true weaknesses are at work. Write them down on a sheet of paper, and figure out which ones you can use in an interview. If you state a weakness you"ve struggled with, your answer will sound more honest. Some things that will help you come up with true weaknesses is to look at some of the challenges you have faced in your previous jobs or think about constructivecriticism you"ve received from a manager.

Avoid deal breakers

Although we mention that you should be honest, it"s also good to remember that there is such a thing as being too honest. You need to avoid weaknesses that will hurt your chances of getting the job. For example, say if you"re applying for an HR position and you say that you"re not good with people, or if you"re trying for a sales job and you say you are bad at negotiating. This doesn"t mean that you have to make up a weakness, but it"s just preferable for you to pick another weakness that isn"t a deal breaker.

Talk about your attempts to overcome your weakness

Always talk about the steps you have taken to overcome your weakness. This is your chance to show the interviewer that although you have your flaws, you are proactiveand resourcefulenough to overcome them. In a way, your effort to conqueryour weaknesses will be looked at as a strength.

Smiles and laughter usually convey friendliness, approval, satisfaction, pleasure, joy and merriment. This is generally true in China as well as the English-speaking countries. However, there are situations when some Chinese will laugh that will cause negative reactions by westerners. To illustrate, here is an excerpt from a letter by an American to a Chinese friend on nonverbal gestures that often cause cross-cultural misunderstanding:“…One is the different meaning of laughter in China and American. When an American is parking his bicycle, for example, and the bicycle accidentally falls over, he feels embarrassed at his awkwardness, and is quite angered and humiliated when Chinese onlookers laugh. I have seen the same thing happen in the dining room, when a foreigner drops a plate quite by accident and feels badly and Chinese onlookers laugh, compounding his discomfort and causing anger and bad feeling.”Such laughter, of course, is not at the person or his misfortune—whether he be a foreigner or a Chinese. It can convey a number of feelings: don"t take it so seriously; laugh it off, it"s nothing; such things can happen to any of us, etc. However, for people unaware of this attitude, the reaction to such laughter is usually quite unpleasant and often generates ill feeling towards those laughing.

A bear, who had made his living by dancing for a long time, at length escaped from his master, and returned to his former companions in the woods. His brothers welcomed him with most friendly growls. The traveler now told what he had seen foreign countries, told a long history of his adventures, and, to exhibit his wonderful feats, began, in an erect position, to dance the Polonaise. His brothers, who were watching the performance, were astonished at his grace, and tried to imitate his ballet steps. It was in vain, hardly were they raised on two legs when they fell again upon all fours. Seeing their awkwardness, the bear went on exhibiting some higher displays of his art, which, at length, aroused the envy of the others, and so they drove him from their society. Once upon a time, a man saw a doorbell hanging from someoneu2019s door and wanted to steal it. But he knew if he were to steal, it would start ringing the duanwenw.com moment his hand touched it, if he were discovered, not only he couldnu2019t get the bell, but he himself might also be caught. He thought this over and said to himself: “Why will there be trouble when a bell rings? This is because our ears can hear it. If I cover my ears, I wonu2019t be able to hear it. This way I wonu2019t be caught.” Later, he eventually got an idea. He first covered his own ears, then went on to steal the bell, However, in the end he was still discovered and caught red-handed. Between the States of Jin and Guo was the State of Yu. Once, the State of Jin intended to invade the state of Guo and had to seek for permission to go by way of the State of Yu. The King of Jin was worried that the State of Yu would refuse to consent. Xun Xi, a high official of the State of Jin, offered his scheme to the King. He said: “If you offer that piece of round jade and that fine steed as gifts to the King of Yu to ask his permission, he is sure to give his consent.” The King of Jin said: 晋王说:“垂棘的壁玉是我祖先的传家宝;屈地的良马是我最喜欢的骏马,如果虞王接受了我们的礼物,却又不肯借路,那怎么办呢?” “The round jade from Chuji is an heirloom from my ancestors. The fine steed from Qudi is a gret favorite of mine. If the King of Yu accepted our gifts, yet would not give us permission, what shall we do then?”: 荀息回答说: “不会。

Preface to Lyrical Ballads William Wordsworth (1800) THE FIRST volume of these Poems has already been submitted to general perusal. It was published, as an experiment, which, I hoped, might be of some use to ascertain, how far, by fitting to metrical arrangement a selection of the real language of men in a state of vivid sensation, that sort of pleasure and that quantity of pleasure may be imparted, which a Poet may rationally endeavour to impart. 1 I had formed no very inaccurate estimate of the probable effect of those Poems: I flattered myself that they who should be pleased with them would read them with more than common pleasure: and, on the other hand, I was well aware, that by those who should dislike them, they would be read with more than common dislike. The result has differed from my expectation in this only, that a greater number have been pleased than I ventured to hope I should please. 2 Several of my Friends are anxious for the success of these Poems, from a belief, that, if the views with which they were composed were indeed realized, a class of Poetry would be produced, well adapted to interest mankind permanently, and not unimportant in the quality, and in the multiplicity of its moral relations: and on this account they have advised me to prefix a systematic defence of the theory upon which the Poems were written. But I was unwilling to undertake the task, knowing that on this occasion the Reader would look coldly upon my arguments, since I might be suspected of having been principally influenced by the selfish and foolish hope of reasoning him into an approbation of these particular Poems: and I was still more unwilling to undertake the task, because, adequately to display the opinions, and fully to enforce the arguments, would require a space wholly disproportionate to a preface. For, to treat the subject with the clearness and coherence of which it is susceptible, it would be necessary to give a full account of the present state of the public taste in this country, and to determine how far this taste is healthy or depraved; which, again, could not be determined, without pointing out in what manner language and the human mind act and re-act on each other, and without retracing the revolutions, not of literature alone, but likewise of society itself. I have therefore altogether declined to enter regularly upon this defence; yet I am sensible, that there would be something like impropriety in abruptly obtruding upon the Public, without a few words of introduction, Poems so materially different from those upon which general approbation is at present bestowed. 3 It is supposed, that by the act of writing in verse an Author makes a formal engagement that he will gratify certain known habits of association; that he not only thus apprises the Reader that certain classes of ideas and expressions will be found in his book, but that others will be carefully excluded. This exponent or symbol held forth by metrical language must in different eras of literature have excited very different expectations: for example, in the age of Catullus, Terence, and Lucretius, and that of Statius or Claudian; and in our own country, in the age of Shakespeare and Beaumont and Fletcher, and that of Donne and Cowley, or Dryden, or Pope. I will not take upon me to determine the exact import of the promise which, by the act of writing in verse, an Author in the present day makes to his reader: but it will undoubtedly appear to many persons that I have not fulfilled the terms of an engagement thus voluntarily contracted. They who have been accustomed to the gaudiness and inane phraseology of many modern writers, if they persist in reading this book to its conclusion, will, no doubt, frequently have to struggle with feelings of strangeness and awkwardness: they will look round for poetry, and will be induced to inquire by what species of courtesy these attempts can be permitted to assume that title. I hope therefore the reader will not censure me for attempting to state what I have proposed to myself to perform; and also (as far as the limits of a preface will permit) to explain some of the chief reasons which have determined me in the choice of my purpose: that at least he may be spared any unpleasant feeling of disappointment, and that I myself may be protected from one of the most dishonourable accusations which can be brought against an Author, namely, that of an indolence which prevents him from endeavouring to ascertain what is his duty, or, when his duty is ascertained, prevents him from performing it. 4 The principal object, then, proposed in these Poems was to choose incidents and situations from common life, and to relate or describe them, throughout, as far as was possible in a selection of language really used by men, and, at the same time, to throw over them a certain colouring of imagination, whereby ordinary things should be presented to the mind in an unusual aspect; and, further, and above all, to make these incidents and situations interesting by tracing in them, truly though not ostentatiously, the primary laws of our nature: chiefly, as far as regards the manner in which we associate ideas in a state of excitement. Humble and rustic life was generally chosen, because, in that condition, the essential passions of the heart find a better soil in which they can attain their maturity, are less under restraint, and speak a plainer and more emphatic language; because in that condition of life our elementary feelings coexist in a state of greater simplicity, and, consequently, may be more accurately contemplated, and more forcibly communicated; because the manners of rural life germinate from those elementary feelings, and, from the necessary character of rural occupations, are more easily comprehended, and are more durable; and, lastly, because in that condition the passions of men are incorporated with the beautiful and permanent forms of nature. The language, too, of these men has been adopted (purified indeed from what appear to be its real defects, from all lasting and rational causes of dislike or disgust) because such men hourly communicate with the best objects from which the best part of language is originally derived; and because, from their rank in society and the sameness and narrow circle of their intercourse, being less under the influence of social vanity, they convey their feelings and notions in simple and unelaborated expressions. Accordingly, such a language, arising out of repeated experience and regular feelings, is a more permanent, and a far more philosophical language, than that which is frequently substituted for it by Poets, who think that they are conferring honour upon themselves and their art, in proportion as they separate themselves from the sympathies of men, and indulge in arbitrary and capricious habits of expression, in order to furnish food for fickle tastes, and fickle appetites, of their own creation. 1 5 I cannot, however, be insensible to the present outcry against the triviality and meanness, both of thought and language, which some of my contemporaries have occasionally introduced into their metrical compositions; and I acknowledge that this defect, where it exists, is more dishonourable to the Writeru2019s own character than false refinement or arbitrary innovation, though I should contend at the same time, that it is far less pernicious in the sum of its consequences. From such verses the Poems in these volumes will be found distinguished at least by one mark of difference, that each of them has a worthy purpose. Not that I always began to write with a distinct purpose formerly conceived; but habits of meditation have, I trust, so prompted and regulated my feelings, that my descriptions of such objects as strongly excite those feelings, will be found to carry along with them a purpose. If this opinion be erroneous, I can have little right to the name of a Poet. For all good poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings: and though this be true, Poems to which any value can be attached were never produced on any variety of subjects but by a man who, being possessed of more than usual organic sensibility, had also thought long and deeply. For our continued influxes of feeling are modified and directed by our thoughts, which are indeed the representatives of all our past feelings; and, as by contemplating the relation of these general representatives to each other, we discover what is really important to men, so, by the repetition and continuance of this act, our feelings will be connected with important subjects, till at length, if we be originally possessed of much sensibility, such habits of mind will be produced, that, by obeying blindly and mechanically the impulses of those habits, we shall describe objects, and utter sentiments, of such a nature, and in such connexion with each other, that the understanding of the Reader must necessarily be in some degree enlightened, and his affections strengthened and purified. 6 It has been said that each of these poems has a purpose. Another circumstance must be mentioned which distinguishes these Poems from the popular Poetry of the day; it is this, that the feeling therein developed gives importance to the action and situation, and not the action and situation to the feeling. 7 A sense of false modesty shall not prevent me from asserting, that the Readeru2019s attention is pointed to this mark of distinction, far less for the sake of these particular Poems than from the general importance of the subject. The subject is indeed important! For the human mind is capable of being excited without the application of gross and violent stimulants; and he must have a very faint perception of its beauty and dignity who does not know this, and who does not further know, that one being is elevated above another, in proportion as he possesses this capability. It has therefore appeared to me, that to endeavour to produce or enlarge this capability is one of the best services in which, at any period, a Writer can be engaged; but this service, excellent at all times, is especially so at the present day. For a multitude of causes, unknown to former times, are now acting with a combined force to blunt the discriminating powers of the mind, and, unfitting it for all voluntary exertion, to reduce it to a state of almost savage torpor. The most effective of these causes are the great national events which are daily taking place, and the increasing accumulation of men in cities, where the uniformity of their occupations produces a craving for extraordinary incident, which the rapid communication of intelligence hourly gratifies. to this tendency of life and manners the literature and theatrical exhibitions of the country have conformed themselves. The invaluable works of our elder writers, I had almost said the works of Shakespeare and Milton, are driven into neglect by frantic novels, sickly and stupid German Tragedies, and deluges of idle and extravagant stories in verse.—When I think upon this degrading thirst after outrageous stimulation, I am almost ashamed to have spoken of the feeble endeavour made in these volumes to counteract it; and, reflecting upon the magnitude of the general evil, I should be oppressed with no dishonourable melancholy, had I not a deep impression of certain inherent and indestructible qualities of the human mind, and likewise of certain powers in the great and permanent objects that act upon it, which are equally inherent and indestructible; and were there not added to this impression a belief, that the time is approaching when the evil will be systematically opposed, by men of greater powers, and with far more distinguished success. 8 Having dwelt thus long on the subjects and aim of these Poems, I shall request the Readeru2019s permission to apprise him of a few circumstances relating to their style, in order, among other reasons, that he may not censure me for not having performed what I never attempted. The Reader will find that personifications of abstract ideas rarely occur in these volumes; and are utterly rejected, as an ordinary device to elevate the style, and raise it above prose. My purpose was to imitate, and, as far as possible, to adopt the very language of men; and assuredly such personifications do not make any natural or regular part of that language. They are, indeed, a figure of speech occasionally prompted by passion, and I have made use of them as such; but have endeavoured utterly to reject them as a

Regardingthis, I also have the same feeling. The book, is the spiritual grain.

chapter 14-《pride and prejudice

Chapter 14 Elizabeth was sitting by herself the next morning, writing to Jane while Mrs. Collins and Maria were gone to the nearby village, when she was startled (使惊讶) by a ring at the door. Since she had heard no carriage, she thought it might be Lady Catherine. When the door opened, to her very great surprise, Mr. Darcy, and Mr. Darcy only, entered the room. After a couple of polite remarks on either side, the conversation seemed to be in danger of falling into awkward silence. Finally, Mr. Darcy said, “This seems a very comfortable house. I believe Lady Catherine had a lot of work done on it before Mr. Collins moved in.” “And he is certainly very grateful for her kindness,” Elizabeth replied. “Mr. Collins appears to be very fortunate in his choice of a wife.” “Yes, indeed, she is one of the very few sensible (明智的) women who would have accepted him, or made him happy if they had. My friend has an excellent understanding—though I am not certain that I consider her marrying Mr. Collins as the wisest thing she ever did. She seems perfectly happy, however, and from a practical point of view , it is certainly a very good match for her.” But when Elizabeth and Charlotte considered the matter further, that did not seem very likely. Mr. Darcy did not seem at ease—he seemed to be there by necessity rather than by choice, and seemed to have great difficulty in making conversation. Colonel Fitzwilliam"s laughing at his occasional awkwardness showed that he was not always awkward, which Elizabeth would not otherwise have been able to guess. Charlotte would have liked to believe that Darcy was in love with Elizabeth, but while he certainly looked at her a great deal, the meaning of his looks was far from clear—sometimes Charlotte doubted if there was much admiration in them. After various guesses, they could at last only suppose his visit was caused by the difficulty of finding anything interesting to do at that time of year, when all outdoor sports and amusements were over. More than once Elizabeth, in her walks within the nearby grounds of Rosings, unexpectedly met with Mr. Darcy. She felt all the awkwardness of these unfortunate meetings, and to prevent such a thing from ever happening again, she made sure to tell him which were her favorite places for taking walks. It was therefore very odd when she met him in the grounds a second time, and even a third! He never said very much, nor did he pressure her into talking or listening for very long. Still it seemed that he was asking some odd and unconnected questions, about how she liked Mr. Collins"s house, her love of solitary (独自的) walks, and her opinion of Mr. and Mrs. Collins"s happiness. One day on her walk she was happy to see Colonel Fitzwilliam, rather than Mr. Darcy, walking toward her, and took the opportunity to start a conversation. “Do you certainly leave Kent on Saturday?” she said. “Yes—if Darcy does not put it off again. He arranges the business just as he pleases.” I do not know anybody who seems more to enjoy the power of doing what he likes than Mr. Darcy,” Elizabeth replied. “We all like to have our own way,” replied Colonel Fitzwilliam, “But Darcy has more chances to do so because he is rich.” “If your cousin brought you down with him chiefly to have someone with him who does what they are told, I wonder he does not marry, to secure a lasting arrangement of that kind. But perhaps his sister does as well for now, and, as she is under his care, he may do what he likes with her.” “No,” said Colonel Fitzwilliam, “that is an advantage which he must divide with me. I am also a guardian (守护者) of Miss Darcy.” “What sort of guardians (守护者) are you? Does she give you much trouble? Young ladies of her age are sometimes a little difficult to manage, and if she has the true Darcy spirit, she may like to have her own way.” For some reason what she had just said seemed to upset Colonel Fitzwilliam, so she tried to reassure (使安心) him: “Do not worry. I have never heard anything against her, and she is probably the most obedient girl in the world. She is a very great favorite with some ladies of my acquaintance, Mrs. Hurst and Miss Bingley. I think I have heard you say that you know them.” “I know them a little. Their brother is a pleasant gentlemanlike (绅士的) man—he is a great friend of Darcy"s.” “Oh! Yes,” said Elizabeth sarcastically; “Mr. Darcy is very kind to Mr. Bingley, and takes an enormous amount of care of him.” “Yes, I believe Darcy does take care of him in those points where he most needs care. From something that he told me on our journey, I have reason to think Bingley owes him a great debt .(人情债)” “What do you mean?”“It is something which Darcy would not wish to be generally known , because_ if it were to_ be heard by the lady"s family, it would be an unpleasant thing.” “You may trust me not to mention it.” “What he told me was that he congratulated himself on having recently saved a friend from a most unwise marriage. I suspect it to be Bingley because he is the kind of young man to get into a situation of that sort, and I know he and my cousin were together the whole of last summer.” “Did Mr. Darcy give you reasons for this interference (干涉) ?” “I understood that there were some very strong objections against the lady.” Elizabeth made no answer, and walked on, boiling with anger inside(怒火中烧) . After watching her a little, Fitzwilliam asked her why she was so thoughtful. “I am thinking of what you told me,” said she. “Your cousin"s conduct does not suit my feelings. Why was he to be the judge? What gave him the right to decide in what manner his friend was to be happy? But,” she continued, recollecting herself, “as we do not know the details, it is not fair to condemn him. We cannot suppose that there was much affection in the case.” “That may be so,” said Fitzwilliam, “but it is, it makes my cousin"s success much less impressive.” Elizabeth did not trust herself with an answer, and quickly changed the subject. Once back in her own room, she could think without interruption about all that she had heard. It must have been Bingley: there could not exist in the world two men over whom Mr. Darcy could have such unlimited influence. She had never doubted that he had been involved in separating Bingley and Jane, but she had always believed that it was primarily Miss Bingley"s idea. But in fact Mr. Darcy was the cause—his pride and desire to have his own way were the cause—of all that Jane had suffered, and still continued to suffer. He had ruined every hope of happiness for the most affectionate, generous heart in the world; and no one could say how lasting an evil he might have inflicted (造成) . “There were some very strong objections against the lady,” were Colonel Fitzwilliam"s words, and those strong objections probably were, her having one uncle who was a country lawyer, and another who was in business in London.

hao to have conversatians

Starting a conversation with a stranger can be daunting, but it doesn"t have to be impossible.Every conversation runs its course within a similar outline: making first contact, introductions, speaking with each other, and then ending the conversation - hopefully with plans to meet again. To navigate these sometimes scary but usually rewarding waters, read on.Firstly, Comment on an item that you both share in your immediate surroundings, such as the long lineup you"re both waiting in or the wobbly chair next to you. By focusing an item you can both experience, you"re removing any potential awkwardness with a canned comment.Secondly, Sometimes a look is all that"s needed to break the ice. When faced with a person you find attractive, why not give them a genuine, 3 second smile? You may be surprised when the object of your happiness starts a conversation with you, instead.Thirdly, you need some quick ideas that can work in a pinch: Current event topics of interest to you; The last movie you watched; A comment about the event you"re attending, with a follow-up question asking how they heard about it.In a word, Focus on taking your own experiences and weaving them in with the other person"s responses. By doing so you"ll be forging a connection with the person, creating hooks of information with which to start a conversation at a later date. To ensure that you are actually conversing, and not just bantering back and forth in a quick succession of questions and answers, try to remember these key points.望采纳谢谢

商务英语面试中如何机智回答“我的缺点”

欢迎阅读w的我整理的面试中如何机智回答缺点问题及回答提示,希望对你有帮助。 the one dreaded question that is guaranteed to come up in every interview is "what is your greatest weakness?" perhaps it"s the interviewer"s way of weeding out candidates to see who is truly prepared to answer this uncomfortable question. regardless, you can remove some of the awkwardness by prepping for the question and following these rules. 1. don"t give a cop-out answer 不要回避问题 please don"t give tired answers like, "my greatest weakness is that i"m too much of a perfectionist/workaholic." perhaps it is true for you, but unfortunately, it may bring false to the interviewer who is used to hearing these generic answers that come off as a way to dodge the question. 请不要给千篇一律的回答,比如:“我最大的缺点是过于追求完美/工作太拼命。”也许这是真实回答,但不幸的是,它会给面试官错误信息,他们习惯了听这些通用回答,会以为你想回避这个问题。 2. be honest 要诚实 dig deep into yourself and figure out what your true weaknesses are at work. write them down on a sheet of paper, and figure out which ones you can use in an interview. if you state a weakness you"ve struggled with, your answer will sound more honest. some things that will help you come up with true weaknesses is to look at some of the challenges you have faced in your previous jobs or think about constructive criticism you"ve received from a manager. 深入挖掘自己,找到真正的缺点。把它们写在纸上,看看哪些可以在面试的时候说。如果你说的是让你烦扰的缺点,听上去会更诚实。帮助你想到真正缺点的事是看你在以前工作中遇到的困难或想想经理对你的有用批评。 3. avoid deal breakers 不要说会影响面试的缺点 although we mention that you should be honest, it"s also good to remember that there is such a thing as being too honest. you need to avoid weaknesses that will hurt your chances of getting the job. for example, say if you"re applying for an hr position and you say that you"re not good with people, or if you"re trying for a sales job and you say you are bad at negotiating. this doesn"t mean that you have to make up a weakness, but it"s just preferable for you to pick another weakness that isn"t a deal breaker. 4. talk about your attempts to overcome your weakness 要谈到你为克服缺点做的努力 always talk about the steps you have taken to overcome your weakness. this is your chance to show the interviewer that although you have your flaws, you are proactive and resourceful enough to overcome them. in a way, your effort to conquer your weaknesses will be looked at as a strength.

Directions: You are going to read a list of headings and a text about preparing in the academic community. Choose the most suitable heading from the list A-F for each numbered paragraph (41-45). The first and last paragraphs of the text are not numbered. There is one extra heading which you do not need to use. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1. (10 points) [A] Physical Changes [B] Low Self-Esteem [C] Emerging Independence and Search for Identity [D] Emotional Turbulence [E] Interest in the Opposite Sex [F] Peer Pressure and Conformity The transition to adulthood is difficult. Rapid physical growth begins in early adolescence — typically between the ages of 9 and 13 — and thought processes start to take on adult characteristics. Many youngsters find these changes distressing because they do not fully understand what is happening to them. Fears and anxieties can be put to rest by simply keeping an open line of communication and preparing for change before it occurs. The main issues that arise during adolescence are: (41) ____B______ A child"s self worth is particularly fragile during adolescence. Teenagers often struggle with an overwhelming sense that nobody likes them, that they"re not as good as other people, that they are failures, losers, ugly or unintelligent. (42) ____A______ Some form of bodily dissatisfaction is common among pre-teens. If dissatisfaction is great, it may cause them to become shy or very easily embarrassed. In other cases, teens may act the opposite — loud and angry — in an effort to compensate for feelings of self-consciousness and inferiority. As alarming as these bodily changes can be, adolescents may find it equally distressing to not experience the changes at the same time as their peers. Late maturation can cause feelings of inferiority and awkwardness. (43) ____D______ Young people feel more strongly about everything during adolescence. Fears become more frightening, pleasures become more exciting, irritations become more distressing and frustrations become more intolerable. Every experience appears king-sized during adolescence. Youngsters having a difficult adolescence may become seriously depressed and/or engage in self-destructive behavior. Often, the first clue that a teenager needs professional help is a deep-rooted shift in attitude and behavior. Parents should be alert to the warning signs of personality change indicating that a teenager needs help. They include repeated school absences, slumping grades, use of alcohol or illegal substances, hostile or dangerous behavior and extreme withdrawal and reclusiveness. (44) ___F_______ There is tremendous pressure on adolescents to conform to the standards of their peers. This pressure toward conformity can be dangerous in that it applies not only to clothing and hairstyles; it may lead them to do things that they know are wrong. (45) ____C______ Adolescence marks a period of increasing independence that often leads to conflict between teenagers and parents. This tension is a normal part of growing up — and for parents, a normal part of the letting-go process. Another normal part of adolescence is confusion over values and beliefs. This time of questioning is important as young people examine the values they have been taught and begin to embrace their own beliefs. Though they may adopt the same beliefs as their parents, discovering them on their own enables the young person to develop a sense of integrity. Although adolescence will present challenges for young people and their parents, awareness and communication can help pave the way for a smooth transition into this exciting phase of life.
