There is a thin line between love and hate, and once Heathcliff crosses it, we see a grand, passionate and absorbingly interesting man turn into a fearsome thug. Thwarted in his love for his childhood soulmate, Catherine Earnshaw, Heathcliff turns his devastation outward, becoming a hateful -- and hated -- person all across the bleak moors that surround his Yorkshire village. Heathcliff courts and marries the sister of the man whom Catherine chose over Heathcliff, only to torture her emotionally as a way of getting even with her brother. Meanwhile, Catherine slowly wastes away pining for Heathcliff, for although she once rejected him, she eventually realizes that she has made an irredeemable error and can never be happy. Heathcliff sums up the tragedy of their lives in a single question near the end of the novel when he asks, "Why did you betray your heart, Cathy?" Sound depressing? It"s not. Wuthering Heights is a grand and glorious novel that dramatically illustrates the power of love, for good and ill. But more importantly, it teaches us that the only path to happiness is to be true to one"s heart, rather than one"s head. Had Catherine honored her bond with Heathcliff and refused to bow to the social mores of her day, not only would the two of them been much happier, but all of the many people whose lives they stumbled into would have been much better off. Another reviewer said that those of us who love this novel probably have a strong identification with one of the characters, and for me that is quite true. That"s the reason for reading a classic like Wuthering Heights, because when it speaks to you in the clear and true way that Bronte does, you know that you are not alone, and that some things transcend time and place. Think about it -- a prim, Victorian preacher"s daughter living on the moors of England before there was electricity can reach across 150 years of time and speak to the heart of a wired American in the 21st century. Pretty amazing.

Thoughts or reflections on reading Wuthering Heights The book was written by Emily Bronte, it published in 1847.But at that time, it seemed to hold little promise, selling very poorly and receiving only a few mixed reviews. I found this in our school library, I chose this book because the title attracted me. The book is structured around two parallel love stories, the first half of the novel centering on the love between Catherine and Heathcliff, while the less dramatic second half features the developing love between young Catherine and Hareton. In contrast to the first, the latter tale ends happily, restoring peace and order to Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange. In the story, the two houses, Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange, represent opposing worlds and values. I spent twenty days reading this book. After reading this book, I felt for Heathcliff at first. Heathcliff begins his life as a homeless orphan on the streets of Liverpool, and then he tyrannized by Hindley Earnshaw. But he becomes a villain when he acquires power and returns to Wuthering Heights with money and the trappings of a gentleman. His malevolence proves so great and long—lasting. As he himself points out, his abuse of Isabella—his wife is purely sadistic, as he amuses himself by seeing how much abuse she can take and still come cringing back for more. Catherine represents wild nature, in both her high, lively spirits and her occasional cruelty. She loves Heathcliff so intensely that she claims they are the same person. However, her actions are driven in part by her social ambitions, which initially are awakened during her first stay at the Lintons, and which eventually compel her to marry Edgar. Catherine is free—spirited, beautiful, spoiled, and often arrogant, she is given to fits of temper, and she is torn between her both of the men who love her. The location of her coffin symbolizes the conflict that tears apart her short life. She is buried in a corner of the Kirkyard. In contrast to Catherine, Isabella Linton—Catherineu2019s sister—in—law represents culture and civilization, both in her refinement and in her weakness. Ultimately, she ruins her life by falling in love with Heathcliff. He never returns her feelings and treats her as a meretool in his quest for revenge on the Linton family. Just as Isabella Linton serves as Catherineu2019s foil, Edgar Linton serves as Heathcliffu2019s. Edgar grows into a tender, constant, but cowardly man. He is almost the ideal gentleman. However, this full assortment of gentlemanly characteristics, along with his civilized virtues, proves useless in Edgaru2019s clashes with his foil. He sees his wife obviously in love with another man but unable to do anything to rectify the situation. Heathcliff, who gains power over his wife, sister , and daughter. The whole story make peopleu2019s mood heavy. Fortunately, the end is happy. Many people in the world are trying to find a perfect companion. Some of these may marry and not know what their new husband or wife is like. This kind of situation often leads to separation or hostility. Other situations may develop between two friends that stem from jealousy, desire for revenge, uncaring parents, etc. Emily Bront?"s Wuthering Heights displays several characteristics of destructive relationships. Three of these are uncaring parents, marriage without knowing the person, and jealousy. Uncaring or unsympathizing parents are shown throughout this story to be an element of destructive relationships. Because Heathcliff gained all the attention from Mr. Earnshaw, Hindley became disassociated from his father. This separation continued until after Mr. Earnshaw had died.Another example is between Hindley and Hareton. Hindley became such a drunk and a gambler that he could not properly care for young Hareton. This led to a separation between Hareton and his father as well. One primary example of an uncaring parent is shown between Heathcliff and his son Linton.Heathcliff did not even want his son for anything except enacting a part of his revenge. This is shown by Linton"s fear of Heathcliff and Heathcliff"s enmity toward his son. The hostility and separation between father and son in this book shows that uncaring parents can cause serious damage in relationships with their children. This element of destructive behavior may stem from an unhappy marriage in which the husbands or wives don"t know each other. This had happened between Isabella and Heathcliff. Isabella did not really know Heathcliff when she married him, but after she had married him she saw that Heathcliff was not a gentleman at all. To declare her feelings she wrote "Is Heathcliff a man? If so, is he mad? And if not, is he a devil? I shan"t tell my reasons for making this inquiry; but I beseech you to explain, if you can, what I have married u2026". Another example of this is when Catherine married Edgar Linton. Although she had been happy at the beginning of the marriage, she thought having parties all the time was going to be fun. Yet, after a while, she became bored. She also realized that she loved Heathcliff more than Edgar and would always love Heathcliff. This enlightenment created separation between Edgar and Catherine during the final hours of Cathy"s life. An additional marriage which was made that was doomed was the one between Catherine and Linton. Because this was a forced marriage, Cathy had not yet learned all she could about Linton.Because she did not know until after the marriage that Linton was selfish and inconsiderate, she became distressed and grew isolated in the house. These three failed marriages described in this novel show that knowing the person you will marry is very important. While these marriages took place, jealousy also took a hold in some relationships. One example of this is when Mr. Earnshaw starts to favor Heathcliff over his own son, Hindley. Because of this, Hindley becomes jealous of young Heathcliff and sets out to make Heathcliff"s life a nightmare. Hindley"s jealousy becomes evident when he says ,"u2026 be damned you beggarly interloper! and wheedle my father out of all he has; only afterwards show him what you are, imp of Satan."Jealousy was also found very notably in the relationship between Heathcliff and Edgar Linton. The jealousy between them is expressed when Heathcliff and Edgar start a hostile conversation after Cathy"s homecoming at Christmas near the beginning of the book. As the story progresses these two become bitter enemies who will not speak to one another. Another relationship which jealousy ruined is the one between Hareton and Linton. These two become jealous of each other over Cathy"s affections. This relationship ends as Hareton and Linton hating each other. These relationships show that jealousy can ruin a relationship very quickly. The jealousy, neglect, and unprepared nature of the many relationships in this book indicates that many of the relationships in this book have gone "sour". In spite of all these destructive elements one relationship may succeed. This is the one between Cathy and Hareton. Because there is no more jealousy or neglect, and because they are getting to know each other, their relationship has a good chance of succeeding.

My love for Linton is like the foliage in the woods: time will change it, I"m well aware, as winter changes the trees. My love for Heathcliff resembles the eternal rocks beneath: a source of little visible delight, but necessary. Nelly, I am Heathcliff! He"s always, always in my mind

After reading Wuthering Heights, the love and the hatred between Catherine and Heathcliff still linger in my head. Wuthering Heights gives me a cold, withering, and lonely feeling; however, at the end the book the author shows us that the human kindness is not diminished at Wuthering heights, even though the wind can break off a tree that doesn"t mean it can break off the whole forest. Even though hatred destroyed Heathcliff , Catherine, Edgar and Elizabeth"s happiness, that doesn"t mean Cathy and Hareton"s happiness. Actually, there is no such a character I really like in Wuthering Heights, every character seems teemed with agony and animosity, especially Heathcliff. Heathcliff is an orphan before Mr.Earnshaw adopt him, and in the novel, it says that Mr.Earnshaw treats Heathcliff even better than his own son, Hindley Earnshaw. It"s quite amazing that in spite of Earnshaw"s nice treatment, Heathcliff has no gratitude at all, he revenged Hindley and Catherine, even their heirs. After reading Heathcliff"story, my feeling is complicated, although he is the avenger who dominate the whole story by using his vengeful machinations, he is also the most pitiful guy in Wuthering Heights; he doesn"t know what is love and don"t know how to love. Heathcliff has lived with the Earnshaws for more than 10 years, but there is no attachment between him and the whole family except Catherine, but even Catherine who was died because of Heathcliff"s tournament. When he is torturing others, he is also giving himself a suffering. Catherine, who is the heroine in the book, is described by Nelly as capricious and selfish. She is just like Heathcliff, doesn"t know how to love at all. Anyways, Wuthering Heights gave me a torment, you can"t see any warm scene in the book, all you see is the fierce wind howled, and wild moor. However, at the end, the combination between Hareton and Cathy seems a hopeful light in the darkness, and the break of the day finally coming!

Wuthering Heights is a well-written trag edy of love. After reading the whole stor y, I would like to talk about the main cha racters of the story—Catherine Earnsha w and Heathcliff. Catherine Earnshaw a nd Heathcliff love each other very much, but they do not have the right attitude to wards love, which leads to the tragedy. In Catherineu2019s life, she made a very fooli sh decision---marrying to Edgar. In fact, her love for Edgar can never be compare d to that for Heathcliff. She did so, beca use she thought the wealth of Edgar wo uld be useful to Heathcliff. But in reality, it did not work. She did not have a good understanding of love, which is somethi ng pure and saint. If anyone add any pur pose into love, love itself lost its meanin g. Catherineu2019s wrong decision hurt two p eople who love her, and even destroyed the happiness of their offspring. Heathcliff is a man full of retaliation. He loved Catherine very much, but what he did, on the contrary, added to the misery of Catherine. In my opinion, if he really l oved Catherine, he should not walk into Catherineu2019s life again after his disappear ance. Further more, after the death of Ca therine, what Heathcliff did brought ago ny to Catherineu2019s daughter, as well as hi s own son. After reading, I have a better understand ing of love. If you love really someone, h is or her happiness is the thing that mos t matters.

Published in 1847,WUTHERING HEIGHTS was not well received by the reading public, many of whom condemned it as sordid, vulgar, and unnatural--and author Emily Bronte went to her grave in 1848 believing that her only novel was a failure. It was not until 1850,when WUTHERING HEIGHTS received a second printing with an introduction by Emily"s sister Charlotte, that it attracted a wide readership. And from that point the reputation of the book has never looked back. Today it is widely recognized as one of the great novels of English literature. Even so,WUTHERING HEIGHTS continues to divide readers. It is not a pretty love story;rather,it is swirling tale of largely unlikeable people caught up in obsessive love that turns to dark madness. It is cruel, violent, dark and brooding, and many people find it extremely unpleasant. And yet--it possesses a grandeur of language and design,a sense of tremendous pity and great loss that sets it apart from virtually every other novel written. The novel is told in the form of an extended flashback. After a visit to his strange landlord, a newcomer to the area desires to know the history of the family--which he receives from Nelly Deans, a servant who introduces us to the Earnshaw family who once resided in the house known as Wuthering Heights. It was once a cheerful place, but Old Earnshaw adopted a "Gipsy" child who he named Heathcliff. And Catherine, daughter of the house, found in him the perfect companion:wild, rude, and as proud and cruel as she.But although Catherine loves him, even recognizes him as her soulmate, she cannot lower herself to marry so far below her social station. She instead marries another, and in so doing sets in motion an obsession that will destroy them all. WUTHERING HEIGHTS is a bit difficult to "get into;" the opening chapters are so dark in their portrait of the end result of this obsessive love that they are somewhat off-putting.But they feed into the flow of the work in a remarkable way, setting the stage for one of the most remarkable structures in all of literature,a story that circles upon itself in a series of repetitions as it plays out across two generations.Catherine and Heathcliff are equally remarkable, both vicious and cruel, and yet never able to shed their impossible love no matter how brutally one may wound the other. As the novel coils further into alcoholism, seduction, and one of the most elaborately imagined plans of revenge it gathers into a ghostly tone:Heathcliff, driven to madness by a woman who is not there but who seems reflected in every part of his world--dragging her corpse from the grave, hearing her calling to him from the moors, escalating his brutality not for the sake of brutality but so that her memory will never fade,so that she may never leave his mind until death itself.Yes,this is madness, insanity, and there is no peace this side of the grave or even beyond. It is a stunning novel, frightening, inexorable, unsettling, filled with unbridled passion that makes one cringe.Even if you do not like it,you should read it at least once--and those who do like it will return to it again and again. 二 After reading Wuthering Heights, the love and the hatred between Catherine and Heathcliff still linger in my head. Wuthering Heights gives me a cold, withering, and lonely feeling;however,at the end the book the author shows us that the human kindness is not diminished at Wuthering heights, even though the wind can break off a tree that doesn"t mean it can break off the whole forest. 三 The book Wuthering Heights told us a story about love and revenge: the abandoned boy Heathdiff was adopted by Mr Eamshaw and lived with Mr Earnshaw"s son Hindley and daughter Cathiner. Hindley disliked Heathdiff. He insulted and maltreated Heathdiff in every possible way after Mr Earnshaw"s death. At the same time, peculiar emotion occurred between Cathiners and Heathdiff. Because of vanity and ignorance, Cathiner decided to mary Linton. Heathdiff left with anger. Three years later, Heathdiff returned to revenge. He succeeded in annexing all the property of Hindley"s and the Linton"s. However, Cathiner"s ghost pestered him all the time, and he died in mental disorder. To understand Wuthering Heights, you must know the auther Amily well. She had been abnormal in inentality ever since her childhood. Her sister Charlotte had once said that Amily was even stronger than a man in character, and more simple than a child. He name Heathdiff was compounded by the words Heath and Cliff, itself gave the readers a feeling of unfeelingness, which well annotated Amily"s abnormal mentality. Abnormal mentality did good for inducing and enriching the imagination of the auther in some way. Sometimes, Amily"s imagination was beyond human nature but urueasenable. That was why she could with the thrilling scene in Mr lockwood"s dream, the behainour of Cathiner when she fell ill, and the words full of strong enthusiasm but unimaginable like. They were locked in an embrace from which I thought my mistress would never be released alive. Amily"s abnormal quality decided the thinking way during her creating, but her work was far from abnormal. Withering Heights is a healthy and harmonious work.Love-hetred-Ievenge-the Ievival of huanan natme, that is the clue of the story Cathiner and Heathdiff weIe a coupla of Iebels against the trandition The tragedy happened all because Cathiner didit Iesist thoughout and betraged Heathcliff at the key moment she ruined herself,Heathdiff and nearty the next generation The author portraged Cathiner Ivth a complicated mood she sympathized with her while being angry with her and she feet Sony for her while spurring to her. The most vivid character in the story was Iepresented by Hindley and he could bear he was tormented by love Catheter"s contempt and Laughing at him that was what he couldn"t bear That the heavy pies sure split his soul explained his cruel and crazyIeuenge. The writing of the novel gave preference to mysterious phenomenon and horrible atmosphere One of the most important fealties was the complexity of the narration structure It broke away from conventions and began from the middle This method of narration was for more attractive. Among all the characters like the housekeeper Allen most She was never afraid of them she always said and did what she wanted to The most important point is that she was kind hearted and justice.A good book is worthy leading for many tines Withering Heights is not easy to understand but once you understand it you wild wander at the talent of the author.

In contrast to Catherine, Isabella Linton—Catherine"s sister—in—law represents culture and civilization, both in her refinement and in her weakness. Ultimately, she ruins her life by falling in love with Heathcliff. He never returns her feelings and treats her as a meretool in his quest for revenge on the Linton family. Just as Isabella Linton serves as Catherine"s foil, Edgar Linton serves as Heathcliff"s. Edgar grows into a tender, constant, but cowardly man. He is almost the ideal gentleman. However, this full assortment of gentlemanly characteristics, along with his civilized virtues, proves useless in Edgar"s clashes with his foil. He sees his wife obviously in love with another man but unable to do anything to rectify the situation. Heathcliff, who gains power over his wife, sister , and daughter. The whole story make people"s mood heavy. Fortunately, the end is happy. The author Emily Bronte lived an eccentric, closely guarded life. She was born in 1818, two years after Charlotte—the author of Jane Eyre and a year and a half before her sister Anne, who also became an author. Her father worked as a church rector, and her aunt, who raised the Bronte children after their mother died, was deeply religious. Emily Bronte did not take to her aunt"s Christian fervor, the character of Joseph, a caricature of an evangelical, may have been inspired by her aunt"s religiosity. The Brontes lived in Haworth, a Yorkshire village in the midst of the moors. These wild, desolate expanses—later the setting of Wuthering Heights—made up the Brontes daily environment, and Emily lived among them her entire life. She died in 1848, at the age of thirty. I like this book because it rest on the unforgettable characters. Wuthering Heights is based partly on the Gothic tradition, a style of literature that featured supernatural encounters, crumbling ruins, moonless nights, and grotesque imagery, seeking to create effects of mystery and fear. I would like to recommend this book to other readers.

1801 I have just returned from a visit to my landlord,Mr Heathcliff.I am delighted with the house I am renting from him.Thrushcross Grange is miles away from any town or village. That suits me perfectly. And the scenery here in Yorkshire is so beautiful! Mr Heathcliff,in fact,is my only neighbour, and I think his character is similar to mine.He does not like people either. ‘My name is Lockwood,"I said, when I met him at the gate to his house.‘I"m renting Thrushcross Grange from you. I just wanted to come and introduce myself." He said nothing, but frowned, and did not encourage me to enter. After a while, however,he decided to invite me in. ‘Joseph, take Mr Lock wood"s horse!"he called.‘And bring up some wine from the cellar!"Joseph was a very old servant, with a sour expression on his face.He looked crossly up at me as he took my horse. ‘God help us!A visitor!"he muttered to himself.Perhaps there were no other servants,I thought. And it seemed that Mr Heathcliff hardly ever received guests. His house is called Wuthering Heights. The name means‘a windswept house on a hill",and it is a very good description. The trees around the house do not grow straight, but are bent by the north wind, which blows over the moors every day of the year.Fortunately, the house is strongly built, and is not damaged even by the worst winter storms. The name‘Earn-shaw"is cut into a stone over the front door. Mr Heathcliff and I entered the huge main room.It could have been any Yorkshire farmhouse kitchen, except that there was no sign of cooking, and no farmer sitting at the table. Mr Heathcliff certainly does not look like a farmer. His hair and skin are dark, like a gipsy"s,but he has the manners of a gentleman. He could perhaps take more care with his appearance, but he is handsome. I think he is proud, and also unhappy. We sat down by the fire,in silence. ‘Joseph!"shouted Mr Heathcliff. No answer came from the cellar,so he dived down there, leaving me alone with several rather fierce-looking dogs. Suddenly one of them jumped angrily up at me,and in a moment all the others were attacking me.From every shadowy corner in the great room appeared a growling animal, ready to kill me,it seemed. ‘Help!Mr Heathcliff!Help!"I shouted, trying to keep the dogs back.My landlord and his servant were in no hurry to help, and could not have climbed the cellar steps more slowly, but luckily a woman, who I supposed was the housekeeper, rushed into the room to calm the dogs. ‘What the devil is the matter?"Mr Heathcliff asked me rudely, when he finally entered the room. ‘Your dogs, sir!"I replied.‘You shouldn"t leave a stranger with them. They"re dangerous." ‘Come, come,Mr Lockwood.Have some wine.We don"t often have strangers here, and I"m afraid neither I nor my dogs are used to receiving them." I could not feel offended after this, and accepted the wine.We sat drinking and talking together for a while.I suggested visiting him tomorrow. He did not seem eager to see me again, but I shall go anyway.I am interested in him, even if he isn"t interested in me. Two days later Yesterday afternoon was misty and bitterly cold, but I walked the four miles to Wuthering Heights and arrived just as it was beginning to snow. I banged on the front door for ten minutes, getting colder and colder. Finally Joseph"s head appeared at a window of one of the farm buildings. ‘What do you want?"he growled. ‘Could you let me in?"I asked desperately. He shook his head.‘There"s only Mrs Heathcliff indoors, and she won"t open the door to you." Just then a young man appeared and called me to follow him.We went through the back door and into the big room where I had been before.I was delighted to see a warm fire and a table full of food. And this time there was a woman sitting by the fire. She must be Mrs Heathcliff,I thought.I had not imagined my landlord was married. She looked at me coldly without saying anything. ‘Terrible weather!"I remarked. There was silence. ‘What a beautiful animal!"I tried again, pointing to one of the dogs that had attacked me.She still said nothing, but got up to make the tea.She was only about seventeen, with the most beautiful little face I had ever seen. Her golden wavy hair fell around her shoulders. ‘Have you been invited to tea?"she asked me crossly. ‘No,but you are the proper person to invite me,"I smiled. For some reason this really annoyed her.She stopped making the tea,and threw herself angrily back in her chair. Meanwhile the young man was staring aggressively at me.He looked like a farm worker, but seemed to be part of the family.I did not feel at all comfortable. At last Heathcliff came in. ‘Here I am,sir,as I promised!"I said cheerfully. ‘You shouldn"t have come,"he answered, shaking the snow off his clothes.‘You"ll never find your way back in the dark." ‘Perhaps you could lend me a servant to guide me back to the Grange?"I asked. ‘No,I couldn"t.There aren"t any servants here except Joseph and the housekeeper.Get the tea ready, will you?"he added fiercely to the young woman.I was shocked by his unpleasantness. We sat down to eat.I tried to make conversation with the three silent people round the table. ‘How happy you must be,Mr Heathcliff,"I began,‘in this quiet place, with your wife and—" “您该有多幸福啊,希斯克利夫先生,”我发话道,“在这个宁静的地方,与您的夫人和……” ‘My wife!My wife"s ghost, you mean?" I suddenly realized I had made a serious mistake. So his wife was dead!Of course he was too old to be married to that young girl. She must be married to the young man next to me,who was drinking his tea out of a bowl and eating his bread with unwashed hands.Perhaps the poor girl had found no one better to marry in this uninhabited area.I turned politely to the young man. ‘Ah,so you are this lady"s husband!"This was worse than before. His face went red,and he seemed only just able to stop himself hitting me.He muttered something I could not hear. ‘Wrong again,Mr Lockwood,"said Mr Heathcliff.‘No,her husband,my son,is dead. This,"he added, looking scornfully at the young man,‘is certainly not my son." ‘My name is Hareton Earnshaw,"growled the young man. We finished our meal in silence, and when I looked out of the window, all I could see was darkness and snow. ‘I don"t think I can get home without a guide,"I said politely. No one answered me.I turned to the woman. ‘Mrs Heathcliff,"I begged,‘What can I do?Please help me!" ‘Take the road you came on,"she replied without interest, opening a book.‘That"s the best advice I can give." ‘Mr Heathcliff,I"ll have to stay here for the night!" I told him. ‘I hope that will teach you not to walk over the moors in bad weather,"he answered.‘I don"t keep guest bedrooms. You can share a bed with Hareton or Joseph." I was so angry with them all that I could not stay there a moment longer, and rushed out into the darkness. I saw Joseph by the back door, caught hold of the lamp he was carrying, and ran with it to the gate. But the dogs chased after me and attacked me,and I was soon knocked to the ground.Heathcliff and Hareton stood at the door, laughing,as I shouted at the dogs and tried to get up.In the end I was again rescued by the housekeeper,Zillah, who ordered away the dogs and helped me to my feet. I was so bruised and exhausted that I did not feel strong enough to walk home, and although I did not want to,I had to spend the night at Wuthering Heights.Nobody wished me goodnight,as Zillah took me upstairs to find a bed for me.

Wuthering HeightsWuthering Heights was published in 1847, and was the only novel written by Emily Bronte. As we know, Emily Bronte and Charlotte, Anne was together called as three sisters" constellation in the English literary history. In 1818, Emily Bronte was born in the poor priest family. With less than two years old, she and her family moved to Howard areas and lived in a remote wilderness, and she never left there. When she was 27 years old, she started to write Wuthering Heights, and published it when she was 29 years old. But Wuthering Heights was not well received by the reading public, many of whom condemned it as sordid, vulgar, and unnatural--and author Emily Bronte went to her grave in 1848 believing that her only novel was a failure. It was not until 1850, when Wuthering Heights received a second printing with an introduction by Emily"s sister Charlotte, that it attracted a wide readership. And from that point the reputation of the book has never looked back. Today it is widely recognized as one of the great novels of English literature. Wuthering Heights is a story of love and revenge; it is the typical gothic novel. It is told in the form of an extended flashback. And Catherine, daughter of the house, regarded him as the perfect companion: wild, rude, and as proud and cruel as she. But although Catherine loves him, even recognizes him as her soul mate, she cannot lower herself to marry so far below her social station. She instead marries another, and in so doing sets in motion an obsession that will destroy them all. Wuthering Heights is not so easy to “get into” , because the description of the environment and the character, the portrait of this obsessive love is so dark and somewhat off-putting. But in this novel there was the flow of the work in a remarkable way setting the stage for one of the most remarkable structures. And these structures circles upon itself in a series of repetitions as it plays out across two generations. Besides, the description of wasteland in the novel gave more impression for readers. Wasteland gives Wuthering Heights rare vigor and charm and gloomier, mysterious, wild, remarkable, full of passion. What"s more, it is the temperament and charm of Wuthering Heights, and can be summed up in two ways: one is the Wuthering of humanity; the other is the Wuthering of nature. Wuthering Heights explores the philosophy of humanity. The characters in the novel are full of boldness, wildness and passion which is the human nature and instinct that free from the restrict of social civilization. In this novel, passion is the key to bring the readers into the story, it does not matter of good and evil, beauty and ugliness, it"s a real existence for us to experience and think.Wuthering Heights is a story of love, but it is different with other love story. During the whole novel, the female leading role --Catherine rarely use "love" to describe the relationship between her and the male leading role--Heathcliff. But In that night she decided personally the tragic fate of her and Heathcliff, she said ‘my great miseries in this world have been Heathcliff"s miseries, and I watched and felt each from the beginning: my great thought in living is himself. If all else perished, and he remained, I should still continue to be; and if all else remained, and he was annihilated, the universe would turn to a mighty stranger: I should not seem a part of it……I am Heathcliff! He"s always, always in my mind: not as a pleasure, any more than I is always a pleasure to me, but as my own being." This is the real soul of Catherine, she love Heathcliff, but she can"t marry with him because of her selfish and the pretentious feature. This is the paradox of love which leads to the tragic end for Catherine and Heathcliff.Wuthering Heights is a story of revenge. After knowing the decision what Catherine made, Heathcliff left her, left Wuthering Heights. But he came back after several years, and retaliated Catherine and all the people who had jeered and abused him before. When Catherine was going to die, he was extremely cruel and did not give her tenderness and consolation, but said to her‘you teach me how cruel you"ve been-cruel and false. Why did you despise me? Why did you betray your own heart,Cathy? I have not one word of comfort. You deserve this. You have killed yourself.……You love me—then what right bad you to leave me? What right—answer me—for the poor fancy you felt for Linton? Because misery, and degradation, and death, and nothing that God or satan could inflict would have parted us,you, of your own will, did it, you have broken mine. So much the worse for me,that I am strong. Do I want to live? What kind of living will it be when you—oh, God! Would you like to live with your soul in the grave?" Yes, Heathcliff hated Catherine so much, because he loved her so much. He must retaliate so that he could be survival from the sadness and the broken heart. The end of the novel was that Heathcliff committed suicide, his death is a die for their love, and express his undyong love for Catherine. Before he died, he gave up the revenge of the next generation. This reflects that he has a good nature, but because of the cruel reality he loses his nature. The recovery of humanity is a spiritual sublimation and reflects the humanitarian ideals. Wuthering Heights is a stunning novel; frightening, inexorable, unsettling, filled with unbridled passion that makes one cringe. Even if you do not like it, you should read it at least once--and those who do like it will return to it again and again Reference:呼啸山庄-世界经典读本(英文原版) 出 版 社: 中央编译出版社

Emily Bronte, a talented English novelist and poet, was born in a 19th century literary family on 30 July 1818 in Thornton, near Bradford in Yorkshire. Emily was the second eldest of the three surviving Bronte sisters, between Charlotte and Anne. Though Charlotte Bronte"s Jane Eyre was generally considered the best of the Bronte sisters" works during most of the nineteenth century, many subsequent critics of Wuthering Heights argued that its evocative descriptions of the lonely moorland setting and the poetic grandeur of vision combine to make this unique novel a masterpiece of English literature. Unfortunately, Wuthering Heights is the only novel by Emily because of her early death due to the indigent condition she lived in.Wuthering Heights is a wild, passionate story of intense and almost demonic love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff. Their souls are made of the exactly same things but manifested in extremely different ways. While Heathcliff has a so extremely clear-cut stand on what to love and what to hate that may be described as cruel, Catherine is of incredible caprice and selfishness.Story begins from the year 1771. Catherine"s father, Mr. Earnshaw loves his adopted son Heathcliff bizarrely much, which gives rise to an intense sense of hate in his own son, Hindley. After Mr. Earnshaw"s death, Hindley humiliates and tortures Heathcliff mercilessly. What is worse, due to the desire for status and wealth, Catherine marries to Edgar Linton, a handsome man from a rich family, instead of her love, Heathcliff. Heathcliff disappears for three years and comes back as a wealthy and polished man after Catherine and Edgar"s marriage. He begins his long-term revenge plan with purchasing Wuthering Heights from Hindley, who turns into totally lapsed after his wife dies of giving birth to his son, Hareton. Later, he takes away Edgar"s little sister, Isabella Linton, who later raises a child, Linton Heathcliff for him.Finding how ecstatic she is to have a reunion with Heathcliff, Catherine also realizes how foolish she is for that she marries to Edgar just for her vanity. But everything"s too late, after giving birth to Cathy Linton; Catherine dies of the unwillingness for surviving. With the beloved person passing away, Heathcliff utterly falls into hell and becomes a devil. Heathcliff deceives and forces little Cathy to marry to his dying son, Linton. After her father"s and her husband"s death, Heathcliff takes over all the property little Cathy should have possessed. Though leading a gloomy life in Wuthering Heights, Cathy and Hareton, the rough but not vicious young man, fall in love. Thanks to the similarity of Hareton Earnshaw and Catherine Earnshaw, Heathcliff gradually realizes that revenge cannot make him feel better; he abandons his revenge and dies peacefully beside the window to the moor. The tragedy of last generation finally ends up in a true love of next generation.

Shakspere (wrong spelling) created Hamlet--a man with wisdom and courage .In order to revenge on his uncle for killing his father, he pretented (spelling mistake) to be mad and suffered a series of misery. On the contrary, we can also say that Hamlet is rude and selfish for he did not think ice before his revenge . if (Capitalize "If" since it is the beginning word of the sentence.) a country has no king, how can a country keep alive (You need a question mark here since it is a question.) So, every thing has o sides, the bright side and adumbral side. Every time we make a decision we have to think ice. Comment: Be careful with your spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Too many uncessary mistakes. It is good that you looked at both the dark and bright sides of Hamlet. Thats quite objective and convincing. My Feelings after reading Wuthering Heights Wuthering Heights is a well-written tragedy of love. After reading the whole story, I would like to talk about the main characters of the story—Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff. Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff do love each other very much, but they do not have the right attitude towards love, which leads to the tragedy. In Catherine"s life, she made a very foolish decision---marrying to Edgar. In fact, her love for Edgar can never be pared to that for Heathcliff. She did so, because she thought the wealth of Edgar would be useful to help Heathcliff. But in reality, it did not work. She did not have a good understanding of love, which is something pure and saint. If anyone add any purpose into love, love itself lost its meaning. Catherine"s wrong decision hurt o people who love her, and even destroyed the happiness of their offspring. Heathcliff is a man full of retaliation. He loved Catherine very much, but what he did, on the contrary, added to the misery of Catherine. In my opinion, if he really loved Catherine, he should not walk into Catherine"s life again after his disappearance. Further more, after the death of Catherine, what Heathcliff did brought agony to Catherine"s daughter, as well as his own son. After reading, I have a better understanding of love. If you love really someone, his or her happiness is the thing that most matters.

The book was written by Emily Bronte, it published in 1847.But at that time, it seemed to hold little promise, selling very poorly and receiving only a few mixed reviews. I found this in our school library, I chose this book because the titleattracted me. The book is structured around two parallel love stories, the first half of the novel centering on the love between Catherine and Heathcliff, while theledramatic second half features the developing love between young Catherine and Hareton. In contrast to the first, the latter tale ends happily, restoring peace and order to Wuthering Heights and ThrushcroGrange. In the story, the two houses, Wuthering Heights and ThrushcroGrange, represent opposing worlds and values. I spent twenty days reading this book. After reading this book, I felt for Heathcliff at first. Heathcliff begins his life as a homeleorphan on the streets of Liverpool, and then he tyrannized by Hindley Earnshaw. But he becomes a villain when he acquires power and returns to Wuthering Heights with money and the trappings of agentleman. However, her actions are driven in part by her social ambitions, which initially areawakened during her first stay at the Lintons, and which eventually compel her to marry Edgar. Catherine is free—spirited, beautiful, spoiled, and often arrogant, sheis given to fits of temper, and she is torn between her both of the men who loveher. The location of her coffin symbolizes the conflict that tears apart her short life. She is buried in a corner of the Kirkyard. However, this full assortment of gentlemanly characteristics, along with his civilized virtues, proves uselein Edgar"s clashes with his foil. He sees his wife obviously in love with another man but unable to do anything to rectify thesituation. Emily Bronte did not take to her aunt"s Christian fervor, thecharacter of Joseph, a caricature of an evangelical, may have been inspired by her aunt"s religiosity. The Brontes lived in Haworth, a Yorkshire village in the midst of the moors. These wild, desolate expanses—later the setting of Wuthering Heights—made up the Brontes daily environment, and Emily lived among them her entire life. She died in 1848, at the age of thirty. Published in 1847, WUTHERING HEIGHTS was not well received by the reading public, many of whom condemned it as sordid, vulgar, and unnatural--and author Emily Bronte went to her grave in 1848 believing that her only novel was afailure. It was not until 1850, when WUTHERING HEIGHTS received a second printing with an introduction by Emily"s sister Charlotte, that it attracted a widereadership. And from that point the reputation of the book has never looked back. Today it is widely recognized as one of the great novels of English literature. Even so, WUTHERING HEIGHTS continues to divide readers. It is not a pretty lovestory; rather, it is swirling tale of largely unlikeable people caught up in obsessivelove that turns to dark madness. It is cruel, violent, dark and brooding, and many people find it extremely unpleasant. And yet--it possesses a grandeur of language and design, a sense of tremendous pity and great loss that sets it apart from virtually every other novel written. The novel is told in the form of an extended flashback. After a visit to his strangelandlord, a newcomer to the area desires to know the history of the family--which he receives from Nelly Deans, a servant who introduces us to the Earnshaw family who once resided in the house known as Wuthering Heights. It was once a cheerful place, but Old Earnshaw adopted a "Gipsy" child who he named Heathcliff. And Catherine, daughter of the house, found in him the perfect companion: wild, rude, and as proud and cruel as she. But although Catherine loves him, even recognizes him as her soulmate, she cannot lower herself to marry so far below her social station. She instead marries another, and in so doing sets in motion an obsession that will destroy them all. WUTHERING HEIGHTS is a bit difficult to "get into;" the opening chapters are so dark in their portrait of the end result of this obsessive love that they are somewhat off-putting. But they feed into the flow of the work in a remarkable way, setting the stage for one of the most remarkable structures in all of literature, a story that circles upon itself in a series of repetitions as it plays out across two generations. Catherine and Heathcliff are equally remarkable, both vicious and cruel, and yet never able to shed their impossible love no matter how brutally one may wound theother. As the novel coils further into alcoholism, seduction, and one of the most elaborately imagined plans of revenge it gathers into a ghostly tone: Heathcliff, driven to madness by a woman who is not there but who seems reflected in every part of his world--dragging her corpse from the grave, hearing her calling to him from the moors, escalating his brutality not for the sake of brutality but so that her memory will never fade, so that she may never leave his mind until death itself. Yes, this is madness, insanity, and there is no peace this side of the grave or even beyond. It is a stunning novel, frightening, inexorable, unsettling, filled with unbridled passion that makes one cringe. Even if you do not like it, you should read it at least once--and those who do like it will return to it again and again

Many people in the world are trying to find a perfect companion. Some of these may marry and not know what their new husband or wife is like. This kind of situation often leads to separation or hostility. Other situations may develop between two friends that stem from jealousy, desire for revenge, uncaring parents, etc. Emily Bront05"s Wuthering Heights displays several characteristics of destructive relationships. Linton even says "... my father threatened me, and I dread him - I dread him!"(244) to express his feeling about Heathcliff. I shan"t tell my reasons for making this inquiry; but I beseech you to explain, if you can, what I have married ..."(125). Hindley"s jealousy becomes evident when he says ,"... be damned you beggarly interloper! and wheedle my father out of all he has; only afterwards show him what you are, imp of Satan."(35). Jealousy was also found very notably in the relationship between Heathcliff and Edgar Linton.

Now letu2019s recall Catherineu2019s love for the two man : My love for Edgar is like the foliage in the woods . Time will change it , Iu2019m well aware. My love for Heathcliff resembles the eternal rocks beneath . My great miseries in this world have been Heathliffu2019s miseries . If all else perished and he remained , I should still continue to be. Nelly , Iu2019m Heathliff . Not as a pleasure but as my own being ! I cannot think of our separation .   Catherine knew her love for Heathcliff but she still chose to marry Edgar because Linton is the owner of the Grange in the future , but what Heathliff has is just shame and a low status . “As Mrs Linton , I can aid you to rise and place you out of my bretheru2019s power .”Catherine said to Heathliff with vanity and innocent. On the other hand , although innocence and selfishness ruined Catherineu2019s love , Itu2019s her choice of marriage that shows the helpless of life and the sufferings he brought . The choice of marriage is more to choose a kind of life , which can bring you peace and security .   Heathcliffu2019s stubborn and fierce is a dramatic contrast to Lintonu2019s gentle and honest. Catherine is a realistic , arrogant and innocent person , so she chose Linton . She has already had a gentle , generous and kind husband but she still cannot stop missing Heathcliff , and at last she died . I think that is the theme : Get the right understanding on how to choose marriage from the wrong choice .   Heathcliffu2019s arrival made a home lose itu2019s balance , following is a series of revenge : Hindley hated Heathcliff , Heathcliff hated Hindley and Edgar . Hareton became the victim of Hindley , Isabella became the victim of Linton . Just for revenge ,Heathcliff even saw his son dying day by day , hatred has taken control of him completely . Of course he has love , for Catherine . They love each other but cannot be together . Love and hate sometimes seem so far , but sometimes they are so close . Heathcliff is a tragedy , itu2019s beyond imagination how painful he is when he think of the past . However , when he died with smile on his face , he may has released from hate .   There are three graves on the hill : Catherine is in the middle of Edgar and Heathcliff . Maybe thatu2019s the best explanation for love and hate . ;

Like many of his later novels, its central theme is the hardship faced by the dispossessed and those of the outside of tolite society. Oliver himself is born in a workhouse and treated cruelly there as was the norm at the time for pauper children, in particular by Bumble, a parish council official or eadle The story follows Oliver as he escapes the workhouse and runs away to London. Here he receives an education in villainy from the criminal gang of Fagin that includes the brutal thief Bill Sikes, the famous artful Dodger and Nancy, Bill whore. Oliver is rescued by the intervention of a benefactor - Mr Brownlow - but the mysterious Monks gets the gang to kidnap the boy again. Nancy intervenes but is murdered viciously by Sikes after she has showed some redeeming qualities and has discovered Monk sinister intention. The story closes happily and with justice for Bumble and the cruel Monks who has hidden the truth of Oliver parentage out of malice. Accusations were made that the book glamorised crime (like the ewgate Group of the period) but Dickens wisely disassociated himself from criminal romances.

呼啸山庄英语读后感 wuthering heights was not well received by the reading public, many of whom condemned it as sordid, vulgar, and unnatural--and author emily bronte went to her grave in 1848 believing that her only novel was a failure. it was not until 1850, when wuthering heights received a second printing with an introduction by emily"s sister charlotte, that it attracted a wide readership. and from that point the reputation of the book has never looked back. today it is widely recognized as one of the great novels of english literature. even so, wuthering heights continues to divide readers. it is not a pretty love story; rather, it is swirling tale of largely unlikeable people caught up in obsessive love that turns to dark madness. it is cruel, violent, dark and brooding, and many people find it extremely unpleasant. and yet--it possesses a grandeur of language and design, a sense of tremendous pity and great loss that sets it apart from virtually every other novel written. the novel is told in the form of an extended flashback. after a visit to his strange landlord, a newcomer to the area desires to know the history of the family--which he receives from nelly deans, a servant who introduces us to the earnshaw family who once resided in the house known as wuthering heights. it was once a cheerful place, but old earnshaw adopted a gipsy child who he named heathcliff. and catherine, daughter of the house, found in him the perfect companion:wild, rude, and as proud and cruel as she. but although catherine loves him, even recognizes him as her soulmate, she cannot lower herself to marry so far below her social station. she instead marries another, and in so doing sets in motion an obsession that will destroy them all. 《呼啸山庄》英文读后感 wuthering heights is a bit difficult to get into; the opening chapters are so dark in their portrait of the end result of this obsessive love that they are somewhat off-putting. but they feed into the flow of the work in a remarkable way, setting the stage for one of the most remarkable structures in all of literature, a story that circles upon itself in a series of repetitions as it plays out across two generations. catherine and heathcliff are equally remarkable, both vicious and cruel, and yet never able to shed their impossible love no matter how brutally one may wound the other. as the novel coils further into alcoholism, seduction, and one of the most elaborately imagined plans of revenge it gathers into a ghostly tone: heathcliff, driven to madness by a woman who is not there but who seems reflected in every part of his world--dragging her corpse from the grave, hearing her calling to him from the moors, escalating his brutality not for the sake of brutality but so that her memory will never fade, so that she may never leave his mind until death itself. yes, this is madness, insanity, and there is no peace this side of the grave or even beyond。

Wuthering Heights, writed Emily Bronte, is really make me fall into a tanglement. Now, let me tell you a detail. I was moving by the true love of Catherine and Heathcliff. Their love is without status and wealth. Catherine is the little daughter of a landlord, while Heathcliff with no money, no status and also be the one lead back by the landlord. Everything is so great and beautiful at the first. But all the good was end up by Cathy"s marriage with another man, Edgar Linton . Certainly, the marriage made Heathcliff crazy even though Cathy just want to help Heathcliff with Edgar"s weath. Anything should be srrelevant in love, but Cathy made a misteak and Heathcliff too. From then on, he tried to do his best to make reprisals. At last, Cathy was dead with sorrow and Heathcliff live with a broken heat and use his rest life to miss Cathy. In our long life, I think we should not make our whole heat in the bad thing. Everything will be OK, and live a happy life with a clear and tolerable heart.
