梯子的比喻很有用处，它可以表明意识的不同分出现在截然分离的阶段，如果毁坏较低的一个横档，上面的横档就无法到达。这一比喻的失当之处是每一较高阶段并非真的凌驾于较低阶段之上，而是自身存在中包含着后者，就像是细胞包含着分子、分子又包含着原子，它是一个嵌套的层次系统（holarchy）。不过梯子的比喻能特别强调成长设计的不同阶段。例如，在发展中，形象、符号、概念、规则等一次出现，不可逆转。任何社会影响也不能改变这一次序，我们也不曾发现能够改变它的社会。它是分层次的，跨越文化，没有例外。正如你必须在造句之前现有词汇，写成段落之前现有句子，就这样，这些基本的子系统形成于其前辈之上又将它们包含在内，正因如此，次序是不可逆转的：较高的横档寄身于较低的之上，这是用梯子作比喻的部分妙处。 自我即攀登者有着梯子所不具备的显著特点和功能。因为梯子根本上是无我的，它的每个横档上都没有内在的自我感。但自我占据了横档，并与之同一，从而产生多种自我身份或者自我成长的阶段，直到彻底的虚空中从梯子上跌落——梯子与攀登者完全是两码事。自我有如下特点：同一、组织、意志或注意、防御、代谢和引导（navigation）。这里不需要对它们深入探讨，仅以“引导”为例，请你注意这么一种情况，“引导”包含着四种驱力，即自我保存、自我适应、自我超越（或自我蜕变）、自我分解，这四种“内驱力”又被包括在自我子系统内的所有子系统所拥有。在自我成长、发展的每一个横档上，它对自我发展的道路都有这四种基本选择。任何一种内驱力过大或过强，都会导致病患，而病变的类型由其（发生时）所处的基本横档决定。 自我可能正在攀登意识扩展之梯，但问题是它在任一横档上都可能丢失一只胳膊或一条腿。如果在发展的不同阶段上出现了问题，自我的某些方面就可能被破坏或“丢弃”。所谓的“被丢弃”就是压抑、分裂或者疏离。自我可能在任何阶段失去一只胳膊或一条腿，这一损失会导致所处阶段特有的病变。所以，从精神病、边缘人格、神经症、实存类疾病、灵性阶段疾病，在不同的阶段我们能见到不同的病变。基本的结构在成长和发展，而自我必须实实在在地与之交涉，实实在在地攀登意识发展的横档，而且在任一横档上都可能跨错一部并严重受伤。 攀登者在梯子上跨越的每一步都称为一个支点。这是建立在由玛格丽特·马赫勒（Margaret Mahler）、奥托·科恩伯格（Otto Kernberg）、亨兹·高赫（Heinz Kohut）、格特鲁德·布兰克（Gertrude Blanck）以及罗伯特·布兰克（Robert Blanck）这样的理论家和临床专家形成的非常重要的研究方法之上的，也可以说包括了卡尔·古斯塔夫·荣格在个性化方面的开创性工作。支点仅仅说明在人类成长和发育过程中分化和整合的重大步骤。尤吉·伯拉（Yogi 我们有了梯子和它的基本横档，有了自我或者攀登者，以及它的支点和由此产生的不同观念。在发展的每个阶段都会产生一种不同的世界景观——关于自我以及其他的不同观点。在发展的不同横档上，世界看起来并不一样（实际上也不一样）。我们时常可以看到，随着意识的发展，不同的空间、不同的世界在不断形成，没有一个预先给定的只被一种方式反映的世界。在不同的横档上，你会获得不同类型的自我感、自我需要和道德态度。 梯子 攀登者 Loevinger）和劳伦斯·科尔伯格。以他们为例只是因为他们广为人知。 具体运算是在七岁左右开始发展的一种能力。这是一种形成复杂的心理规则和接受社会角色的能力。这时，儿童开始明白自己不只是具有冲动和欲望的身体，而且是存在于社会中的社会个体，他（她）必须适应这些社会文化角色，这是一个艰难而痛苦的时期。这个例子的运作如下。当基本结构中的具体运算出现后，儿童的自我讲面对新的意识横档。那么它必须通过达到意识新水平的1——2——3过程，和那个水平上的支点交涉，先要踏上横档，认同横档，认同尊奉规则和角色的能力，换句话说，即与具体运算同一（这就是支点的第一阶段）。那么，这里的自我即具体运算之自我，这是它的主要特点和基本的自我感。所以，你可以看到在洛文格一栏中，这个阶段的自我感是遵从感，同样，在马斯洛一栏中，这个阶段的基本需要是归属与爱的需求，而在科尔伯格一栏中，这个阶段的道德感集中于遵从习俗地接受他人。这便跨越了梯子、攀登者、观念。如果继续发展下去，自我会最终超越那些观念，再次扩展其觉知。为此，自我必须离开现在的横档，脱离它，或超越它，这就是支点的第二阶段——分化或超越，然后，自我认同下个更高档的横档，这就是第三阶段。于是，我们到达了新的支点，同样，我们还会离开，直到发展终止。 不过，从一个很普遍的意义上来说，这也使很多批评家困惑不解。所有的发展论者，包括科尔伯格（Kohlberg）、卡罗尔·吉利根（Carol Gilligan）、亨兹·沃纳（Heinz Werner）、让·皮亚杰（Jean Piaget）、R.佩克（R.Peck）、哈贝马斯（Habermas）、罗伯特·塞尔曼（Robert Selman）、埃里克·埃里克森（Erik Arieti），甚至包括从普罗提诺（Plotinus）、莲花生大士（Padmasambhava）、智凯（Chih-i）到法藏（Fa-tsang）的沉思传统，都开列了一个阶梯状甚至梯子状的单子、一个成长和发展的层次系统。因为梯子状的层次系统负荷他们的资料。这些经验的、现象学的和解释性的证据以及大量的研究资料导致了阶段的论点。这些人并不是在生拉硬扯，因为他们喜欢梯子。但是，关于这些层次系统还有重要的一点，即使在像科尔伯格理论那样的重要说法中，他们也认为，在发展的任一点上，自我都把50%的反应分配给其所在的层次，25%给上一层次，25%给下一层次。自我绝不会只“存在”于一个阶段。何况还有各种回归、螺旋上升、暂时飞跃、高峰体验之类的情况。所以它不过是一个平均值。这有点像文化——它们有一个平均重心，有些成员在此之上或之下。同样自我系统也有自己的重心，这就是说，它的有些内在成分在它的平均值之上或之下。或者说，与其说爬梯者是一个不连贯的整体，不如说是一滴水在沿着意识扩展的球体缓慢移动。 自我可能在任何横当上受到伤害而缺胳膊少腿。攀登者的某些方面会在较低的横当上滞留，就像从主要睡地上分离出来的小水滴会停留在较低阶段。这就是压抑。我们且以到的阶段为例。道德发展的最初阶段是以私我为中心的、自恋的、唯我论倾向的，倾向于非常冲动、贪求享乐。这就是科尔伯格所说的前成规阶段。中间的阶段称作成规阶段，因为正如我们看到的，他们倾向于非常顺从——我们的国家无论对还是错。高级阶段叫做后成规阶段，因为他们开始超越习俗或尊奉模式，而集中于普遍多元主义和个人权力上。再往上则是后后成规阶段，或者灵性阶段。出于某些原因，在初期阶段可能会重复遭受严重的创伤，例如在前成规阶段，在人生最初的三四年里，那会发生什么呢？此时，自我的重心在前成规的冲动阶段，所以冲动自我（impulsive self）的不同方面会被割开、分裂，如果这种分裂极为严重，自我发展会骤然停止。更多的情况下，自我还会蹒跚前行，分裂依然继续。于是，自我尽管收到了伤害，步履蹒跚，但还会继续发展，继续攀登意识扩展的基本结构，它也许会血流满地，却不会停止攀登。但是，冲动自我的某一方面还是被割掉、被分裂了。被割掉的方面便停止了攀升，不再成长发展。更准确地说，它在地下层建起了店铺。在这个例子中，分裂出现于第一阶段，所以这个方面拥有着第一阶段的世界观。即使自我的其他方面继续成长发展，它依旧停留在道德感的第一阶段，所以是完全自恋、以私我为中心、专注于自我的，总的说来易于冲动，并继续用它在最初或原始阶段里能得到的范畴来解释世界。当自我的主题水滴在梯子上附着上升时，这个小水滴却落在了后面，用神经症甚至精神症的症状破坏着自我的主要部分（main self）。总水滴正在获得更高更广的世界观，小水滴却仅仅效忠于唯我而自恋的原始世界观和前成规阶段的冲动和需要。出于道德感的第三或第四、五阶段的总水滴与出于第一阶段的小水滴只见的内部斗争可能是毁灭性的。这不是外部斗争，而是内战，也就是病变。我们可以看到，我们在发展中要做的第一件事情就是帮助终止内战。 在展开更高的阶段或灵性阶段前，一个人必须与所有较低的水平交涉（negotiate）。例如在到达第六阶段前还要与第一阶段交涉。一个人几乎在自己成长的每一个阶段都可以拥有灵性体验——高峰体验。从最低到最高的基本结构是个人存在的结构性潜力。在狂喜、性爱或紧张的时刻，在梦幻般的沉思中，在药力的作用下，甚至在精神病的发作中，你都可能进入更高的状态。那么会发生什么呢？例如一个正处于科尔伯格的第三道的阶段的人，正在体验某种来自于精微光明层次的现象，或许是一种强烈的内在幻想。这可以深刻地改变一个人的人生，并为他打开新的世界、新的时空或新的意识模式。这很可能会导致一次意识领域真正的转变、成长和发展。如果给这个人做一个道的阶段测验的话，你可能发现他真的从第三阶段转移到了第四阶段，除此之外不会是别的。这些阶段不可避开，就像不能避开分子而从原子直接到达细胞。所以一个经历了深刻灵性体验的人可能从其所处的第三道德阶段被推送到下一阶段——第四阶段，而绝不可能从第三阶段直接到达第七阶段。发展真正的灵性阶段、超个人阶段（科尔伯格所说的第七阶段）依赖先前的第六到第一阶段的发展。每一阶段都会为第七阶段的显现提供绝对必要的东西。尽管一个人可以拥有更高空间的高峰体验，但他的自我还必须继续成长、发展、进化，以与更高或更深的空间长远适应。 人们在期待他人成长的时候，经常犯“拔苗助长”的错误。灵性必须遵循从阶梯一级一级向上攀登，不可随便逾越；即使发生了更快、更集中的攀升（高峰体验）而暂时越过了某些步骤，意识也必须回过头来确信前面所有阶段都发展充分了。后人本心理学在发展初期的一个重大问题就是倾向于集中研究高峰体验。企图从我们平常的自我的、理性的、分析的意识一步转变为广大自由的宇宙上帝意识。其实并非所有非自我的、非理性的意识都是高级灵性意识，人们把前自我、前理性、前个人误当做超自我、超理性和超个人。这就是标准的前/超谬误，仅仅因为前自我（pre-ego）与超自我（trans-ego）都是非自我（non-ego），便把二者混为一谈。其实，一粒橡籽想要与森林成为一体，它必须先成长为一棵橡树。 高峰体验（peak experience）可以说是一种“一瞥”体验（peek experience）。对你可能无法把握的维度和空间，你得以瞥上一眼。一个人在智力上达到第五水平的理性，却可能在道德上停留在第一阶段。一个很聪明的纳粹，基本上就是这种情况。涉足更高的结构是一回事，真正生活在那里却截然不同的另一回事。如果想不辜负自己的灵性体验，就必须成长发展。你可以拥有一次强烈的高峰体验或者开悟。但是几天、几周、几月之后，你又如何保留它呢？你的真实的自我、你的重心，只有依照高峰体验自己的结构、能力、成长阶段才能与之适应。灵性体验不会容许你简单地绕过持久的灵性实现本身所依赖的成长、发展。进化可以加快，却不能从根本上跨越。这就像在生物进化史上，在鱼类出现之前由于基因突变而先出现了一个人，但是由于他生存所依赖的那些物种还没有出现，以及他发展所依赖的同类组成的社会而在地球上消亡了。
