I am a Brit and very proud of my country, and I don"t think I even have to be an ex-pat but it helps. Once a friend of mine said he wished he was American. When I enquired why, he said "Britain is the bad end of civilisation." Unfortunately, I didn"t have the guts to face up to him at the time, but now I see how very wrong he is for a number of reasons.

1. A fascinating history. We have castles, stone age and iron age fortress remains, medieval castles, some of the greatest industrial and scientific achievements and discoveries that have changed the world.

2. The food. Fish and Chips, tea, steak and kidney pie, rhubarb crumble, treacle tart, and worldwide Granted, people make jokes about it, but it has a lot of variety without the frills, and I wouldn"t have it any other way!

3. The weather. Plenty of variety and comparatively few natural disasters compared to other countries.

4. The BBC and most TV. The BBC sometimes get on my nerves, but the high quality stuff that they and others come up with is very impressive: Life on Mars, Dr Who, comedies like the Office, Extras, Blackadder, Only Fools and Horses, Oh Dr Beeching, Dad"s Army, Monty Python, etc.

5. Literature. The Lord of the Rings film was made by the New Zealanders, but the original book was written by the British writer J.R.R Tolkien. Then there"s Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, J K Rowling, Mary Shelley, Bram Stoker,

6. Scientific discoveries. Charles Darwin and the theory of evolution, Isaac Newton and the laws of gravity, Alexander Fleming and penecillin

7. Inventions such as the Anenometer, Disc brakes, tin cans, cat"s eyes in roads, cement, cordite, corkscrews, diving equipment, electric motors and electromagnets, fax machines, gas masks, internal combustion and jet engines, lawn mowers, lightbulbs, mousetraps, the periodic table, polyester, radar and radio (principles), rubber bands, railways and steam locomotives, seed drills, sewing machines, steel production, TV, toilet paper (well, we have to be grateful for that, mustn"t we!), vacuum cleaners, waterproof fabric, and the means of communication we"re using right now, the world wide web!

8. One of the best militaries (perhaps even THE best) the world has ever seen. The redcoats in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, the British Tommies, and modern soldiers such as the Royal Marines, the Parachute Regiment, the Special Air Service and Special Boat Service (both of whom invented the counter terrorist rescue teams and their tactics).

9. Sport. Why should we constantly moan about how England doesn"t win the world cup while the Scottish and Welsh jeer? We won it once, and the Rugby world cup, that counts for something! Some countries haven"t won those even once!

10. Music. We came up with the Beatles, the Who, Queen, Britpop, we"ve revolutionised music.

11. Quality of life. People complain a lot about this one, but we get free healthcare, a nice variety of things even if one has to fork out a bit extra for them, sometimes expensive but good quality pubs, clubs, bars, theatres, restaurants, lower crime rates and people better behaved than you might think (I for one have had so-called "Chavs" actually greeting me and asking me to hang out with them even when I haven"t known them from Adam!) and for those who feel Europe is better, I spent a fortnight in Europe and in the East over there and Germany, apparently heavy drinking is just as heavy as us. Also, I have yet to see beggars in Britain of the calibre of the type I saw in Italy and France!

12. Sensibilities. We pride tolerance, fairness, politeness and manners, freedom of speech,

13. Film and theatre. Many performers in our country have gone on to become world-renowned stars, such as Noel Coward, Michael Cane, Helen Mirren, Ewan McGregor, Rachel Weisz, Jason Isaacs, Sean Bean, Alan Rickman, Jeremy Irons, Richard E Grant, Christian Bale, Daniel Day Lewis to name but a few!

14. Some of the nicest landscape in the world. Sometimes it"d be nice to see stuff that"s a bit less tethered to civilisation, but if you forget about that, it"s wonderful! The Brecon Beacons in Wales, the Cotswolds, the Pennines, the Scottish Highlands, I only have to look out of my window to see rolling green hills and a setting sun.

15. The British Empire! Yes, I know, I"ve read all about the oppression and so on and so forth which is not to be ignored, but people back then ruled with far different standards to nowadays (for example, in WWII, they dropped bombs on cities which would be unthinkable in these times) and Britain was no worse than any other country that had an empire, just that it was the biggest empire, which has given the English language to the world, and spread things such as railways, trade, and banning things like the terrible "sutee" traditions in India, and slavery during the 1800s. Also, most of the empire was finally released with comparatively little bloodshed compared with other decolonising countries.

In a way, I also see it as a rebellion to all the "oh we are rubbish" that is bandied around, and my friend"s comment above was pretty much the final straw (if you don"t like the country, nobody is forcing you to stay). I live in Ludlow on the border of England and Wales, and it is by far, one of the nicest towns in Britain. I have sometimes got sick of it during hard times, but it is a lively and beautiful place, and I love it to bits, especially when getting off the train after a long arduous journey. And as for my country, sometimes I have got sick of it, I"m no little Englander (I am keen on going to America sometime soon, they"ve got a wonderful variety of country over there) but the rest of the time, it"s home. And if it was so bad, I"d have gone years ago.

I took this out of another thread, What do you think of England? An argument then started mainly by english residents saying it was and quoting me sites from the Internet......The Internet is made from Information from all genres of the community not all true, but hey, if it"s on the net, it"s true...

I could Quote all day long, for I am a History Major, from Glasgow Universiy, taught by a professor from Oxford....

Firstly to be a country you first need to fill 8 criteria, England only fills 2

MY original post in that thread was England is only one quarter of the Country which is UK or Gt Britain....

then all hell broke loose.....England is a Nation, not a country..But the english members that posted disagreed...

if you don"t believe me, here"s some net based facts...u seem so keen to rely on>>>>>>

There are eight accepted criteria used to determine whether an entity is an independent country or not.

A country need only fail on one of the eight criteria to not meet the definition of independent country status. England does not meet all eight criteria; it fails on six of the eight criteria...

The United Kingdom is a country that consists of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. In fact, the official name of the country is "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland."

Great Britain is the name of the island northwest of France and east of Ireland that consists of three somewhat autonomous regions: England, Wales and Scotland.

Therefore, England is part of Great Britain, which is part of the United Kingdom. The U.K. includes England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland are not countries but the United Kingdom is. The remaining portion of the island of Ireland (that which is not the U.K."s Northern Ireland) is an independent country called the Republic of Ireland

Noise is among the most pervasive pollutants today. Noise from road traffic, jet planes, jet skis, garbage trucks, construction equipment, manufacturing processes, lawn mowers, leaf blowers, and boom boxes, to name a few, are among the audible litter that are routinely broadcast into the air. Noise negatively affects human health and well-being. Problems related to noise include hearing loss, stress, high blood pressure, sleep loss, distraction and lost productivity, and a general reduction in the quality of life and opportunities for tranquillity. We experience noise in a number of ways. On some occasions, we can be both the cause and the victim of noise, such as when we are operating noisy appliances or equipment. There are also instances when we experience noise generated by others just as people experience second-hand smoke. While in both instances, noises are equally damaging, second-hand noise is more troubling because it has negative impacts on us but is put into the environment by others, without our consent. Noise pollution is not easily defined. Part of the difficulty lies in the fact that in some ways it is different from other forms of pollution. Noise is transient; once the pollution stops, the environment is free of it. This is not the case for chemicals, sewage, and other pollutants introduced into the air, soil, or water.

f you have a good neighbor, you are a lucky person. You have someone who cares about your needs and your property, who is helpful in the little day-to-day situations that e up, and who is supportive in times of crisis.A good neighbor is someone who, for instance, understands that your children may occasionally run across his lawn, even though you tell them not to. He"ll realize that children can be careless about things like that, and he won"t make a big fuss about it unless it bees a regular thing. In the same vein, he knows that you"ll understand if some of the trash from his trash cans blows across into your yard. IN other words, he is sensitive to the unintentional things that can happen. He doesn"t make a big deal about them.

在我成为知名的励志演讲人之后,我的经典演说之一就是《行动、态度和氛围》(The Three A " s: Action, Attitude, and Atmosphere)。

He had a beautiful hat, and he often put his head out of the window during the trip and looked at the mountains. But the wind pulled his hat off. Mr. Jones quickly took his old bag and threw that out of the window too. The other people in the carriage laughed. “Is your bag going to bring your beautiful hat back?” they asked. “No,” Mr. Jones answered, “but there"s no name and no address in my hat, and there"s a name and address on the bag. Her mother always took her to school in the morning and brought her home in the afternoon. Last Monday her mother went to the school at 4 o"clock, and Mary ran out of her class. “We"ve got a new girl in our class today, Mummy,” she said. “She"s six years old too, and she"s very nice, but she isn"t English. She"s German.” “Does she speak English?” Mary"s mother asked.“No, but she laughs in English,” Mary said happily. 4 Mrs. Jones did not have a hu *** and, but she had o sons. They were big, strong boys, but they were lazy. On Saturdays they did not go to school, and then their mother always said, “Please cut the grass in the garden this afternoon, boys.” The boys did not like it, but they always did it. Then somebody gave one of the boys a magazine, and they saw a picture of a beautiful lawn-mower in it. There was a seat on it, and there was a woman on the seat. The boy took the picture to his mother and brother and said to them, “Look, that woman"s sitting on the lawn-mower and driving it and cutting the grass. We want one of those.” “One of those lawn-mowers?” his mother asked. “No,” the boy said. “We want one of those women. Then she can cut grass every week.” 5 One of Harry"s feet was bigger and the other. “I can never find boots and shoes for my feet,” he said to his friend Dick. “Why don"t you go to a shoemaker?” Dick said. “A good one can make you the right shoes.” “I"ve never been to a shoemaker,” Harry said. “Aren"t they very expensive?” “No,” Dick said, “some of them aren"t. There"s a good one in our village, and he"s quite cheap. Here"s his address.” He wrote something on a piece of paper and gave it to Harry. Harry went to the shoemaker in Dick"s village a few days later, and the shoemaker made him some shoes. Harry went to the shop again a week later and looked at the shoes. Then he said to the shoemaker angrily, “You"re a silly man! I said, ‘Make one shoe bigger than the other," but you"ve made one *** aller than the other!”

And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country. George took off his jacket, rolled up his sleeves and pushed is right arm through the drain cover. He may hunt, beg, or steal occasionally to keep himself alive; he may even, in times of real need, do a little work; but he will never sacrifice his freedom. Ships may be delayed by storms; flights may be cancelled because of bad weather, but trains must be on time. Lawn mowers whining on a summer"s day, late-night parties in apartment blocks, noisy neighbors, vehicles of al kinds, especially large container trucks thundering through quiet village, planes and helicopters flying overhead, large radios carried round in public places and played at maximum volume. In the light of this statement, teachers live by selling knowledge, philosophers by selling wisdom and priests by selling spiritual comfort. Studies serve for delight, for ornament, and for ability. Reading makes a full man, conference a ready man, and writing an exact man.

In pioneer days, being a good neighbor was very important. Neighbors helped one another raise a house, build a barn, and clear fields.Families depended on one another for friendship and entertainment. But today in our cities and suburbs, neighboring is not common. A family may not even know the other families that live close by. We live in an age of machines, and each family may have its own car, TV set, and washing machine. People no longer depend on neighbors as much as they once did. Machines keep people apart in other ways. In our grandparents" time, women met while they hung out their washing, and men stopped and talked while they mowed their lawns. Today, women stay in the house with their automatic dryers. The men can"t hear anything above the roar of theirpower lawn mowers. And the children are inside watching their favorite TV show. Is the idea of being neighborly old-fashioned? In 1965, a power failure hit New York City, and many thousands of people were left stranded. Suddenly, everyone shared the same problem, and our largest city became a group of eight million neighbors. People with cars offered rides to those walking.Other persons helped direct traffic. Trapped in elevators, people played word games and helped keep each other in good spirits. In times of trouble, people still depend on one another. As time goes on, people may once again feel that being a good neighbor is important.

Lesson 47 Too high a price?

Lesson 47 Too high a price? Listen to the tape then answer the question below. What does the writer describe as an "amusing old-fashioned source of noise"? Pollution is the price we pay for an overpopulated, over industrialized planet. When you come to think about it, there are only four ways you can deal with rubbish: 当我们开始考虑垃圾问题时,我们只有4种对付垃圾的方法: dump it, burn it, turn it into something you can use again, attempt to produce less of it. We keep trying all four methods, but he sheer volume of rubbish we produce worldwide threatens to overwhelm us. Rubbish, however, is only part of the problem of polluting our planet. The need to produce ever-increasing quantities of cheap food leads to a different kind of pollution. Industrialized farming methods produce cheap meat products: beef, pork and chicken. The use of pesticides and fertilizers produces cheap grain and vegetables. The price we pay for cheap food may be already too high: Mad Cow Disease (BSE) in cattle, salmonella in chicken and eggs, and listeria in dairy products. And if you think you"ll abandon meat and become a vegetarian, 如果你想放弃肉类而变成一位素食者, you have the choice of very expensive organically-grown vegetables 那么你可以两者择一:或是选用价格昂贵、有机培植的蔬菜, or a steady diet of pesticides every time you think you"re eating fresh salads and vegetables, or just having an innocent glass of water! However, there is an even more insidious kind of pollution that particularly affects urban areas and invades our daily lives, and that is noise. Burglar alarms going off at any time of the day or night serve only to annoy passers-by and actually assist burglars to burgle. Car alarms constantly scream at us in the street and are a source of profound irritation. A recent survey of the effects of noise revealed (surprisingly?) that dogs barking incessantly in the night rated the highest form of noise pollution on a scale ranging from 1 to 7. The survey revealed a large number of sources of noise that we really dislike. Lawn mowers whining on a summer"s day,late-night parties in apartment blocks, 这个调查揭示了我们所不喜欢的大量的噪间的来源:夏天呜呜作响的割草机,公寓楼里深夜聚会的喧哗声, noisy neighbours, vehicles of all kinds, especially large container trucks thundering through quiet villages, planes and helicopters flying overhead, 大声吵闹的邻居,各式各样的车辆,特别是穿越寂静的村庄的集装箱卡车,从头顶飞过的飞机和直升机, large radios carried round in public places and played at maximum volume. New technology has also made its own contribution to noise. A lot of people object to mobile phones, especially when they are used in public places like restaurants or on public transport. Loud conversations on mobile phones invade our thoughts or interrupt the pleasure of meeting friends for a quiet chat. The noise pollution survey revealed a rather surprising and possibly amusing old fashioned source of noise. It turned out to be snoring! Men were found to be the worst offenders. It was revealed that 20% of men in their mid-thirties snore. This figure rises to a staggering 60% of men in their sixties. 60%。 Against these figures, it was found that only 5% of women snore regularly, 与这些数字相比,只有5% 的女性经常打鼾, while the rest are constantly woken or kept awake by their trumpeting partners. Whatever the source of noise, one thing is certain: silence, it seems, has become a golden memory.

The definition of noise itself is highly subjective. To some people the roar of an engine is satisfying or thrilling; to others it is an annoyance. Loud music may be enjoyable or a torment, depending on the listener and the circumstances. Broadly speaking, any form of unwelcome sound is noise pollution, whether it is the roar of a jet plane overhead or the sound of a barking dog a block away. The actual loudness of a sound is only one component of the effect it has on human beings. Other factors that have to be considered are the time and place, the duration, the source of the sound, and whether the listener has any control over it. Most people would not be bothered by the sound of a 21-gun salute on a special occasion. On the other hand, the thump-thump of a neighbour"s music at 2 a.m., even if barely audible, could be a major source of stress. The decibel (dB) (分贝) is a measure of sound intensity; that is, the magnitude of the fluctuations in air pressure caused by sound waves. In fact, an increase of just 3 dB means twice as much sound, and an increase of 10 dB means ten times as much sound. A sound pressure level of 0 dB represents the threshold of hearing in the most sensitive frequency range of a young, healthy ear, while the thresholds of tickling or painful sensations in the ear occur at about 120 to 130 dB. There is fairly consistent evidence that prolonged exposure to noise levels at or above 80 dB can cause deafness. The amount of deafness depends upon the degree of exposure. Noise can cause annoyance and frustration as a result of interference, interruption and distraction. Exposure to noise is also associated with a range of possible physical effects including: colds, changes in blood pressure, other cardiovascular changes, increased general medical practice attendance, problems with the digestive system and general fatigue.

Robotics is the science and technology and application of robots. Stories of artificial helpers and attempts to create them has a long history and is the basis of much science fiction.Robots are generally used to help with jobs that are too dirty or boring for most human beings. The first prgrammable humanoid robot was about 1206 AD. We can make a robot to look like almost anything we want. The most fantasized about are ones that have a humanoid appearance. Think of a repetative task and generally there is probably one on th market that can do what you want.Remember Rosey the robot on The Jetsons, or the robot on Lost in Space. We have come a long way, but we aren"t quite that far yet. It is only a matter of time. There are already robots that can do simple tasks like cleaning the floor, or doing the laundry. But these won"t be ready for the public until about the year 2010. The cost of the robots is another matter. The robot is based around the structure, which is like the skeleton of the human body. It is the main support system.Next, you have the actuatorsor "muscles" of the robot. This is quite complex, and I won"t go into now.Manipulators are the way an object is manipulated. This generally is done by grippers, or effectors. Then there is locomotion to worry about. Do you have a flat surface that it will work on? Then it will probably be a rolling robot. It can be two wheels, four wheels, or on tracks. If there are stairs, or uneven terrain the problem becomes more complex. Walking is difficult to solve, especially if you compare it to how a human walks. If The robot has locomotion, I am assuming it is going from point A to point B. Does it need memory to get to point A and memory to get to point B? It will probably need something similar to radar to be used for crash avoidance.Scientists and researchers are constantly trying to hone the robot into something better.Robots make our life a lot easier. They are in every facet of our life. The computer, garage door opener, unmanned reconnaissance planes, satellites, lawn mowers, a GPS in our car. These are all of robots we we use every day and probably don"t think about it.As you can tell, robots can get very complex very quickly. The fancier you make it, the more compkex and expensive it becomes. You are trying to tell an inanimate object how to do something halfway human, and that is complex.2People who go all Lou Dobbs about robots. People say things like: All robots look alike. Robots should speak English. Robots are taking all the jobs. Robots don"t pay enough taxes. Robots reproduce like bunnies. I don"t want my child playing with a robot, or goodness gracious, marrying a robot. An acquaintance of mine, who discriminates against robots, but never actually met one, received a Roomba for Christmas "I pushed its power button," she said. "It was so cute when it sounded the "charge," and scurried across the floor gobbling up dust bunnies. I love Roomba," she said. "But I still don"t like robots." It is typical to think that your robot is somehow different from other robots. Those other robots can not be trusted. It may take another generation, one where our children are raised amongst robots, for them to gain acceptance. Like the washing machine and the automobile, robots are part of our future. It is true that robots can be hard to tell apart. I remember Sarah Connor in Terminator II. She damn near wet her pants when a series 800-Model 101 showed up, a few years after she"d sent its twin to the scrap heap. Given a little time, however, she got acquainted with the big, muscle-bound machine. She fantasized about keeping him on as dad and husband. After all, he got along well with the boy, was a good provider, and would stop at nothing to protect her family.Although robots are loyal and dependable, they do screw up once in a while. I"m thinking of HAL in 2001, A Space Odyssey. He definitely made a mistake of judgment. I still think he deserved a second chance? For every HAL, there are dozens of R2-D2"s and 3CPO"s. And that cute little WALL-E.Occasionally, there is a bad egg, like ED-209 in RoboCop. Or the Battle Droids in Star Wars. But are they worse than rottweilers and pit bulls? Surely, some of them can be rehabilitated, and make good pets. From an economic point of view, you can"t beat robots. They work day and night. They rarely call in sick. They add to the nation"s GDP, and don"t require pensions or health care. They are terrific with numbers and rarely have math anxiety. RoboDoc performs delicate surgeries 24/7 and he never gets the shakes. But, you ask, "What if they go into politics?" Will they impose their culture, their language, and their way of life on us? Forget about it. No one can resist Big Macs, vacations to Disneyland, and shopping at Walmart. This is America..Face it, robots are here to stay. They are willing to do ANYTHING. They make great maids and gardeners, sweepers and scrubbers, mowers and choppers. There are robots that care for the elderly, wash their dirty bottoms and soon perhaps, play Yahtzee with them. There are robots that imitate pets yet don"t require walks nor litter boxes. Even robots that"ll go the fridge, grab a cold beer, and bring it to you. If it"s eager to watch the Super Bowl, and play Wii Tennis, you got yourself a great roommate. As far as intermarriage with a robot, didn"t they try that in The Stepford Wives? Maybe it was just too soon.3Most of us are still of of the mindset that robotics is something that is rather futuristic. We still may have pictures in our head of humanoid robots, flailing their arms and either attacking the Earth from other planets or perhaps protecting us in some way or another. The fact of the matter is, humanoid robots are still very much futuristic but much of the future of robots is already in existence today. Robots are used in a number of different settings that you might find rather interesting. Here is a little bit about the future of robotics and the fact that much of it is already in existence with what we are doing now.One of the ways in which robots are most often used is in an industrial setting. The automotive industry, for example, makes use of robots on their assembly lines to do a number of different tasks. Unfortunately, this has put many individuals out of a job because the robot was able to do what they used to do on the assembly line more efficiently. Not only that, once the robot is put into place they are able to take care of these repetitive tasks, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. One of the ways in which robotics is used on a regular basis is in spot welding. Although this used to require a human touch, much of the welding that is now done by robots is so accurate and precise that a human could not possibly take care of it in that way. Many times, this welding needs to be done in an assembly line environment so the same simple task is done over and over again. It will be difficult for anybody to improve on what is already existing in these robotics unless they make them less apt to have difficulties from breaking down.Robots are also able to help us to get out of dangerous situations in many cases. A good example of this is spring painting. Humans used to have to take care of spray painting in the automotive industry and other industrial settings. This put them at risk because they were constantly being exposed to dangerous chemicals, even if they wore protective clothing. A robot is not only able to be in these rooms without having to worry about health concerns, they are able to do the painting more evenly and accurately than their human counterparts. Finally, robotics are often used in the development and building of computer chips. These chips are often too small for humans to work on themselves so if or not for the robotics that are put to use in these factories, much of the computer science that we have today would not be in existence. Although they will continue to improve on this and other things in the robotics industry, the fact of the matter is that the modern-day use of robotics is already futuristic.

(Don"t let the zombies trample the flowers)。 (Don"t lose more than 2 plants)。 (Never have more than 15 plants)3、不要损失任何草坪收割机(Don "t lose any lawn mowers)。

Harvey B.Mackay

Some people succeed because they are destined to, but most people succeed because they are determined to.”When Henry Ford said those words he wasn"t just talking about himself. He went belly-up several times, but never lost sight of his goal. He believed in himself and in what he was doing. In the end, he was so right.Don"t ever let anyone tell you that you can"t accomplish your goals. Who says you"re not tougher, better, harder working, smarter and more able than your competition? It doesn"t matter if they say you can"t do it. The only thing that matters is if you say it. If you believe in yourself, there"s hardly anything you can"t accomplish. Most actors fail before they succeed. Gene Hackman and Dustin Hoffman were both voted by their acting classmates as the “Least Likely to Succeed.” And how many of those classmates can boast an Academy Award? Woody Allen failed in both the motion picture production classes he attended in college. Lucky for him, his film audiences gave him better grades. Harrison Ford was told by movie executives that he simply didn"t have what it takes to be a star. Of course, he proved them wrong by starring in the “Star Wars” trilogy, the Indiana Jones series, and a string of movies that have grossed over $6 billion! Some of the most successful singers in history have overcome bumpy starts as well. Diana Ross and the Supremes were flops on their first nine records, but the tenth took them to the top of the charts. After only one performance, Elvis Presley was fired in 1954 by Jimmy Denny, manager of the Grand Ole Opry, who told him, “You ain"t going nowhere, son. You ought to go back to driving a truck.” One recording company executive told The Beatles, “We don"t like their sound, and guitar music is on the way out.”Don"t take no for an answerWhat part of “no” didn"t these people understand? The part that said “no confidence.” They had every confidence that they could achieve and succeed.Business legends are no different. We all know about inspirational success stories like Bill Gates, Col. Harlan Sanders and R.H. Macy. But do you know about Soichiro Honda? Many of you have driven his cars, used his lawn mowers and ridden his motorcycles. Honda was turned down by Toyota Motor Corporation for a job as an engineer, so he started making scooters and finally started his own company. Honda Corporation says: “We see the world not as it is, but as it could be. We see the world through the eyes of dreamers. Because we are a company founded by a dreamer. And we are a company built on dreams.”If we want to triple our success ratio … we might have to triple our failure rate.Surround yourself with top-quality people and listen to their input. Don"t wait until it"s too late to change. Start to take the true measure of your success now.To simply ask the question, “How can I make a difference?” is to answer it, because the answer is to never let yourself stop asking the question.I"ve asked myself that question hundreds of times. Maybe thousands. And any time I feel like quitting I just look at a framed poster I have hanging in our office:He failed in business in "31. He ran as a state legislator and lost in "32. He tried business again in "33 and failed again. His sweetheart died in "35.He had a nervous breakdown in "36. He ran for state elector in "40 after he regained his health. He was defeated for Congress in "43, defeated again for Congress in "48, defeated when he ran for the Senate in "55 and defeated for vice presidency of the United States in "56. He ran for Senate again in "58 and lost.He never quit. He kept trying till the last. In 1860, this man, Abraham Lincoln, was elected president of the United States.Mackay"s Moral: You must believe if you want to achieve.

译林版八下英语课课练U5 P47 一/(1) Is it proper to greet people by shaking their hands in the UK

Noise constantly invades our daily lives. According to a recent survey, the worst noise is dogs barking at night, although the noise of lawn mowers, late-night parties, noisy neighbours, vehicles, planes and helicopters and large radios all adds. While the use of mobile phones in public places, it seems,is annoying, the survey revealed that one "old-fashioned" source of noise is snoring, with men the worst offenders: only a small percentage of women snore, but they suffer most. The village contained one street and looked forbidding. Apart from a goat, it seemed deserted, so they sat down and had a picnic. Looking up, they suddenly found themselves surrounded by children in rags. The children were silent and motioneless. As they walked down the street followed by the children, the village came alive with faces in windows and people watching them silently from doorways. The visitors were clearly unwelcome. They hurried back down to the stream and the boatman.

Inventor Wayne Szalinski (Rick Moranis), is one of those inventors you would find in a Rube Goldberg cartoon. In other words, he makes inventions that are supposed to run like clockwork, and half the time they usually don"t.His latest invention is a machine that shrinks things down. But he hasn"t figured out how to get it to work properly. When the Szalinski"s neighbours, the Thompsons, accidentally break their attic window with a baseball, it activates the machine, and absorbs some of its power. Suddenly, the machine starts shrinking things, including the Szalinski"s kids Amy and Nick, and the Thompson kids, Russ and Ron.Wayne unwittingly sweeps up the kids and puts the rubbish bag in the back garden. So begins the kids odyssey of trying to get back home through the jungle of their own garden. It is an uphill struggle to say the least, with the kids having to contend with dive-bombing bumblebees, killer scorpions, and runaway lawn mowers.I love the way Joe Johnston applies the connotation of a jungle to the Szalinski"s overgrown garden. The blades of grass now resemble a rainforest, water sprinklers are like a thunderstorm to the kids, and the ants, bees and scorpions they encounter are like the local wildlife. This film is a great deal more clever and inventive than most Disney films. Its just one adventure after another, with our four heroes just trying to survive, and the adults trying to find a way to restore them to normal. Rick Moranis is likable enough as the befuddled scientist trying to straighten out the mess he"s made. Marcia Strassman is great too as his wife, who has a nice chemistry with Rick Moranis.Matt Frewer and Kristine Sutherland add good support as the Thompsons. Matt Frewer gives one of his more endearing performances, and he"s quite comical when he seems more interested in the state of the Szalinski"s lawn then his own children. He is like one of those fathers out of an Al Shepard novel, i.e. frequent camping trips, sticking to schedules, no understanding of his children at all, etc. Kristine Sutherland would eventually go on to find fame as Joyce Summers in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The film is refreshingly clear of the over-sentimentality common with most Disney films. The only time when it does feel trite is when the kids befriend a baby ant, and it ends up being killed by a scorpion. I did think that was a bit unlikely that a scorpion would be in their garden, but that"s only a minor fault. The fight between the scorpion and the ant is well done, and is fairly reminiscent of classic sci-fi creature films. There are many memorable scenes such as Nick and Russ riding a bee, the aforementioned ant-scorpion fight, and the kids caught in the middle of a storm caused by sprinklers. And who could forget the blackly humorous moment when Wayne almost devours Nick inside of his own breakfast cereal. Bit sadistic that for a Disney film! There"s a nice sense of camaraderie and teamwork from the kids and the adults. I never get tired of this film. Its far superior to the sequels, consistently entertaining, fun, and quite lively too. Roger Ebert thought it had no fun, which just isn"t true. Fortunately, he was proved wrong. Honey, I Shrunk the Kids was a huge success, grossing over 150 million dollars at the box office.A hugely enjoyable film, and one that both kids and adults can get a kick out of.

1 Mr Jones had a few days" holiday, so he said, "I"m going to go to the mountains by train." He put on his best clothes, took a small bag, went to the station and got on the train. He had a beautiful hat, and he often put his head out of the window during the trip and looked at the mountains. But the wind pulled his hat off. Mr Jones quickly took his old bag and threw that out of the window too. The other people in the carriage laughed. "Is your bag going to bring your beautiful hat back?" they asked. "No," Mr Jones answered, "but there"s no name and no address in my hat, and there"s a name and address on the bag. Someone"s going to find both of them near each other, and he"s going to send me the bag and the hat." 2 An old lady went out shopping last Tuesday. She came to a bank and saw a car near the door. A man got out of it and went into the bank. She looked into the car. The keys were in the lock. The old lady took the keys and followed the man into the bank. The man took a gun out of his pocket and said to the clerk, "Give me all the money." But the old lady did not see this. She went to the man, put the keys in his hand and said, "Young man, you"re stupid! Never leave your keys in your car: someone"s going to steal it!" The man looked at the old woman for a few seconds. Then he looked at the clerk—and then he took his keys, ran out of the bank, got into his car and drove away quickly, without any money. 3 Mary was an English girl, but she lived in Rome. She was six years old. Last year her mother said to her, "You"re six years old now, Mary, and you"re going to begin going to a school here. You"re going to like it very much, because it"s a nice school." "Is it an English school?" Mary asked. "Yes, it is," her mother said. Mary went to the school, and enjoyed her lessons. Her mother always took her to school in the morning and brought her home in the afternoon. Last Monday her mother went to the school at 4 o"clock, and Mary ran out of her class. "We"ve got a new girl in our class today, Mummy," she said. "She"s six years old too, and she"s very nice, but she isn"t English. She"s German." "Does she speak English?" Mary"s mother asked. "No, but she laughs in English," Mary said happily. 4 Mrs Jones did not have a husband, but she had two sons. They were big, strong boys, but they were lazy. On Saturdays they did not go to school, and then their mother always said, "Please cut the grass in the garden this afternoon, boys." The boys did not like it, but they always did it. Then somebody gave one of the boys a magazine, and they saw a picture of a beautiful lawn-mower in it. There was a seat on it, and there was a woman on the seat. The boy took the picture to his mother and brother and said to them, "Look, that woman"s sitting on the lawn-mower and driving it and cutting the grass. We want one of those." "One of those lawn-mowers?" his mother asked. "No," the boy said. "We want one of those women. Then she can cut grass every week." 5 One of Harry"s feet was bigger and the other. "I can never find boots and shoes for my feet," he said to his friend Dick. "Why don"t you go to a shoemaker?" Dick said. "A good one can make you the right shoes." "I"ve never been to a shoemaker," Harry said. "Aren"t they very expensive?" "No," Dick said, "some of them aren"t. There"s a good one in our village, and he"s quite cheap. Here"s his address." He wrote something on a piece of paper and gave it to Harry. Harry went to the shoemaker in Dick"s village a few days later, and the shoemaker made him some shoes. Harry went to the shop again a week later and looked at the shoes. Then he said to the shoemaker angrily, "You"re a silly man! I said, "Make one shoe bigger than the other," but you"ve made one smaller than the other!" 6 Joe Richard finished school when he was 18, and then his father said to him, "You"ve passed your examinations now, Joe, and you got good marks in them. Now go and get some good work. They"re looking for clever people at the bank in the town. The clerks there get quite a lot of money now." A few days later, Joe went to the bank and asked for work there. A man took him into a small room and gave him some paper, and then he gave them to the man. The man looked at them for a few minutes, and then he took a pen and said to Joe, "Your birthday was on the 12th of June, Mr Richard?" "Yes, sir," Joe said. "What year?" the man asked. "Oh, every year, sir, " Joe said. 7 Fred works in a factory. He does not have a wife, and he gets quite a lot of money every week. He loves cars, and has a new one every year. He likes driving very fast, and he always buys small, fast, red cars. He sometimes takes his mother out in them, and then she always said, "But, Fred, why do you drive these cars? We"re almost sitting on the road!" Then Fred laughs and is happy. He likes being very near the road. Fred is very tall and very fat. Last week he came out of a shop and went to his car. There was a small boy near it. He was looking at the beautiful red car. Then he looked up and saw Fred. "How do you get into that small car?" he asked him. Fred laughed and said, "I don"t get into it. I put it on." 8 Mr and Mrs Yates had one daughter. Her name was Carol, and she was nineteen years old. Carol lived with her parents and worked in an office. She had some friends, but she did not like any of the boys very much. Then she met a very nice young man. His name was George Watts, and he worked in a bank near her office. They went out together quite a lot, and he came to Carol"s parents" house twice, and then last week Carol went to her father and said, "I"m going to marry George Watts, Daddy. He was here yesterday." "Oh, yes," her father said. "He"s a nice boy—but has he got any money?" "Oh, men! All of you are the same," the daughter answered angrily. "I met George on the first of June and on the second he said to me, "Has your father got any money?"" 9 Miss William was a teacher, and there were thirty small children in her class. They were nice children, and Miss Williams liked all of them, but they often lost clothes. It was winter, and the weather was very cold. The children"s mothers always sent them to school with warm coats and hat and gloves. The children came into the classroom in the morning and took off their coats and hats and gloves. They put their coats and hats on hooks on the wall, and they put their gloves in the pockets of their coats Last Tuesday Miss Williams found two small blue gloves on the floor in the evening, and in the morning she said to the children, "Whose gloves are these?", but no one answered. Then she looked at Dick. "Haven"t you got blue gloves, Dick?" she asked him. "Yes, miss," he answered, "but those can"t be mine. I"ve lost mine." 10 Whitebridge was a small village, and old people often came and lived there. Some of them had a lot of old furniture, and they often did not want some of it, because they were in a small house now, so every Saturday morning they put it out, and other people came and looked at it, and sometimes they took it away because they wanted it. Every Saturday, Mr and Mrs Morton put a very ugly old bear"s head out at the side of their gate, but nobody wanted it. Then last Saturday, they wrote, "I"m very lonely here. Please take me," on a piece of paper and put it near the bear"s head. They went to the town, and came in the evening. There were now two bears" heads in front of their house, and there was another piece of paper. It said, "I was lonely too."The poor are very wonderful people. One evening we went out and we picked up four people from the street. And one of them was in a most terrible condition, and I told the sisters: You take care of the other three. I take care of this one who looked worse. So I did for her all that my love can do. I put her in bed, and there was such a beautiful smile on her face. She took hold of my hand as she said just the words "thank you" and she died. I could not help but examine my conscience[良心]before her and I asked what would I say if I was in her place. And my answer was very simple. I would have tried to draw a little attention to myself. I would have said I am hungry, that I am dying, I am cold, I am in pain, or something, but she gave me much more-she gave me her grateful love. And she died with a smile on her face. As did that man whom we picked up from the drain[阴沟、下水道], half eaten with worms, and we brought him to the home. "I have lived like an animal in the street, but I am going to die like an angel, loved and cared for." And it was so wonderful to see the greatness of that man who could speak like that, who could die like that without blaming anybody, without cursing anybody, without comparing anything. Like an angel-this is the greatness of our people. And that is why we believe what Jesus had said: I was hungry, I was naked, I was homeless, I was unwanted, unloved, uncared for, and you did it to me. A Boy and His TreeA long time ago, there was a huge apple tree. A little boy loved to come and play around it every day. He climbed to the tree top, ate the apples, took a nap under the shadow… He loved the tree and the tree loved to play with him. Time went by…The little boy had grown up and he no longer played around the tree. One day, the boy came back to the tree and looked sad. “Come and play with me,” the tree asked the boy. “I am no longer a kid, I don"t play around trees anymore.” The boy replied, “I want toys. I need money to buy them.” “Sorry, but I don"t have money…but you can pick all my apples and sell them. So, you will have money.” The boy was so excited. He picked all the apples on the tree and left happily. The boy didn"t come back after he picked the apples. The tree was sad. One day, the boy returned and the tree was so excited. “Come and play with me.” The tree said. “I don"t have time to play. I have to work for my family. We need a house for shelter. Can you help me?” “Sorry, but I don"t have a house. But you can cut off my branches to build your house.” So the boy cut all the branches of the tree and left happily. The tree was glad to see him happy but the boy didn"t appear since then. The tree was again lonely and sad. One hot summer day, the boy returned and the tree was delighted. “Come and play with me!” the tree said. “I am sad and getting old. I want to go sailing to relax myself. Can you give me a boat?” “Use my trunk to build the boat. You can sail and be happy.” So the boy cut the tree trunk to make a boat. He went sailing and did not show up for a long time. Finally, the boy returned after he left for so many years. “Sorry, my boy. But I don"t have anything for you anymore. No more apples for you.” the tree said. “ I don"t have teeth to bite.” The boy replied. “ No more trunk for you to climb on.” “I am too old for that now.” the boy said. “I really want to give you something…the only thing left is my dying roots.” The tree said with tears. “I don"t need much now, just a place to rest. I am tired after all these years.” The boy replied. “Good! Old tree roots are the best place to lean on and rest. Come here, please sit down with me and have a rest.” The boy sat down and the tree was glad and smiled with tears… This is a story of everyone. The tree is our parent. When we were young, we loved to play with Mom and Dad… When we grow up, we leave them, and only come to them when we need something or when we are in trouble. No matter what, parents will always be there and give everything they could to make you happy. You may think that the boy is cruel to the tree but that"s how all of us are treating our parents.
