地球上最后一个被发现且唯一无土著人居住的大陆。又称第七大陆。 位于地球最南端 ， 与其他大陆隔南大洋相望，是地球上最偏远、最寒冷、领土主权悬而未决的大陆。 地理 南极洲为通 常 所说的南大洋即太平洋、大西洋、印度洋的南部水域所包围 。 与南美洲最近的距离为965千米，距新西兰2000千米、澳大利亚 2500 千米、非州南端 3800 千米。总面积约1400万平方千米，相当于中国与印巴大陆面积的总和，居世界第五位。整个南极大陆被一巨大的冰盖所覆盖。平均海拔2350米。南极横断山脉将南极大陆分成东、西两部分，东南极冰盖最高点为4100米。西南极的文森山海拔5140米，是南极最高峰。 水资源 南极洲 98％ 的地域被一个直径 4500 千米的永久冰盖所覆盖，其冰架延伸到其周围的海域，夏季冰架面积为 265 万平方千米，冬季可扩展到南纬55°，面积达1880万平方千米；冰盖平均厚度为2000米，最厚处达4750米；冰盖总贮冰量为2500万立方千米，占全球冰总量的90％，如全部融化，全球海平面将上升50～60米。 气温 南极素有寒极之称，其低温的最根本原因是冰盖将80％的太阳辐射反射掉了，大陆永久冰封雪盖。南极仅有冬夏两季之分，4～10月为冬季，11～3月为夏季，沿海地区夏季月均气温0℃左右，内陆地区为－35～－15℃ ， 冬季沿海月均气温为－30～－15℃，内陆地区为－70～－40℃；位于东南极的前苏联东方站在1983年6月记录到的最低温度为－88.3℃。气温随纬度和海拔的增高而下降，东南极比西南极低。南极虽然贮存了全球 75％ 的淡水 ，但因其以永久固态方式存在，故南极异常干燥，有白色沙漠之称。沿海地区年降雪量相当于900毫米，而内陆仅为50毫米。在南纬 50°～70°南大洋水域，低压气旋不断，有时环南极水域中的低压气旋可同时有6个之多，并自西向东运动，风速可达85千米／小时。南极大陆的冷空气自海拔高的极点地区向地势较低的沿海区运动，形成强烈的下降风，风速最大可达300千米／小时。 3000万年前南极是个气候温和、草丰林茂、动物成群的大陆。到了2800万年前，冰盖逐渐形成，绝大多数动植物便绝迹了，已不存在高等动物和开花植物，仅有 340余种植物，其中包括200多种地衣、85种苔藓、28 种伞状菌和25种欧龙牙草。沿海有两种显花植物和近千种海藻。南极陆地上仅有一些微生物和少数无脊椎动物生存于植物丛、地衣、泥沼中。在南极发现的无脊椎动物有 387种 。与南极大陆贫乏的生物种类相比较，南大洋生物资源异常丰富，其生态系中有个稳定的食物链即浮游植物→浮游动物→磷虾→乌贼、鱼类→企鹅、鸟类→海豹→鲸 ； 磷虾是南大洋食物链中关键的一环，其总贮量为6.5亿吨；除此 ，乌贼贮量为 1亿吨和近2万种鱼类。南极共有21种企鹅 ， 大都生活在南纬 45°～55°地区。 矿物 根据近 30 多年在南极进行地球物 理调查所获得的资料和依据板块构造理论对有亲缘板块拼接的结果证实，南极洲存在着丰富的煤、铁、石油与天然气。煤资源主要存在于南极横断山脉，为二叠纪煤，贮相较浅，煤块呈凹凸状。铁矿贮存于东南极的因德比地到威尔科斯地之间的地区，但是最大的铁矿在查尔斯王子山脉 ， 其范围绵延数十千米 ， 此外，南极洲还有金、银、铂、铬、锡、铅等多种金属矿藏。 地质 南极洲原是古冈瓦那大陆的核心部分。大约在1.85亿年前古冈瓦那大陆先后分裂为非洲南美洲板块、印度板块、澳洲板块并相继与之脱离。大约在1.35亿年前非洲南美板块一分为二，形成了非洲板块与南美板块。大约在5500万年前澳洲板块最后从古冈瓦那大陆上断裂下来飘然北上，于是只剩下了南极洲。东南极与西南极在地质上截然不同。东南极是一个古老的地盾，距今约30亿年。而西南极是由若干板块组成，在地质年龄上远比东南极年轻。 探索 发现经过 18 世纪起，探险家们纷纷南下去寻找传说中的南方大陆。1772～1775 年英国J.库克船长历时 3年8个月，航行97000千米、环南极航行一周，几次进入极圈 ，但他最终未发现陆地。 1819年沙俄派别林斯高晋率东方号与和平号两船，历时两年零21天分别在南纬69°53′、西经82°19′和南纬 68°43′、西经73°10′发现了两个岛。1823年2月英国人J.威德尔南下到南纬 74° 15′ ， 创造了当时南下的最高纬度。1837年9月～1840年11月法国 D.迪尔维尔曾力图超过威德尔创造高纬度纪录未成，但他以夫人的名字命名他于 1840年1月19日发现的岛屿为阿德雷地，并命名其沿海水域为迪尔维尔海，后人还以其夫人的名字命名了一种企鹅，即阿德雷企鹅。随后，英国的J.罗斯于1841年驶入后来以他的名字命名的罗斯湾，，但他为冰障所阻无法到达他预测的南磁极——南纬75°30′、东经154°。1908年英国的 E.沙克尔顿挺进到南纬88°23′，离南极点仅差180千米 ，但由于食品耗尽而折回。1909年 D.莫森 、E.戴维斯和 A.麦凯首次到达当时为南纬72°24′，东经155°18′的南磁极。1911年12月14日和1912年1月17日挪威的L.阿蒙森和英国的R.斯科特率领的探险队先后到达南极点。 从1772年库克扬帆南下到19世纪末，先后有很多探险家驾帆船去寻 找南方大陆 ， 历史上把这一时 期称为帆船时代。20世纪初到第一次世界大战前，尽管时间短暂，但人类先后征服了南磁 极和南极点 ， 涌现了不少可 歌可泣的探险英雄。历史上称这一时期为英雄时代。第一次世界大战后至50年代中期 ， 人类在 南极探 险逐 渐用 机械设 备取代了 狗拉雪橇。1928年英国的H.威尔金驾机飞越南极半岛，1929年美国人R.伯德驾机飞越南极点，同年另一美国人L.艾尔斯沃斯驾机从南极半岛顶端飞至罗斯冰架。飞机在南极探险方面为人类宏观正确地认识南极大陆提供了可靠的手段，历史上称这一时期为机械化时代。从1957～1958年的国际地球物理年起至今，众多的科学家涌往南极，他们在那里建立常年考察站，进行多学科的科学考察，人们称这一时期为科学考察时代。 领土问题 对南极的领土要求 从 1908～1941年，共有7个国家先后对南极洲提出了领土要求 。1908 年英国首先宣布对西经20°～50°、南纬50°以南和西经 50°～ 80°、南纬 58°以南包括福克兰群岛（马尔维纳斯群岛）和南极半岛在内的扇形地块及其水域拥有主权 ；1923 年英国又对从东经 160°到西经150°、南纬 60° 以南的罗斯扇形地区提出领土要求并委托新西兰总督管理，这也是新西兰所要求的那块扇形大陆。实际上英国当时的真正企图是要将整个南极大陆纳入其版图。1929～1931年由澳大利亚人莫森率领的英-澳-新西兰联合考察队对上述地区进行了考察。接着，英国在1933年代表澳大利 亚对 南纬 60°以 南 、东经45°～ 136° 和东经142°～160°相当于南极大陆40％的650 万平方千米的陆地和水域提出了领土要求。 法国以他们的探险者最早发现阿德雷沿岸为由于1924年对东经136°～142°、南纬67°以南的一块狭长地域提出领土要求，1938年又重申并将这块地域延伸到极点和南纬60°。 1938年德国派测绘船对毛德皇后地一带进行闪电式考察，在6天半时间内用飞机对毛德皇后地 60 万平方千米的地区进行了航空调查与拍照，并每隔25千米空投一颗曲十字金属标记物。挪威在 1939 年1月也声明对东经 45°至西经 20°之间的地域拥有主权，但既没向南延伸到极点，也没有规定其北部边界的纬度 。 第二次世界大战期间 ， 德国舰艇以凯尔盖朗岛为基地在西南极水域时常出没拦劫商船和捕鲸船，从而突出了南美大陆与南极半 岛之间德 雷克海 峡的军事意义。为此，智利在1940年宣布对西经53°～90°之间、南纬60°以南的地域拥有主权。阿根廷于1941年宣布对西经25°～74°、南纬60°以南的地域拥有主权；他们的依据是南美大陆与南极半岛地质上的亲缘关系、有效占领理论以及西班牙原来所宣称的对南极领土要求的继承。英国、智利、阿根廷3国对南极提出领土要求的大部分地区相重叠，致使3国之间发生争论。英国于1947年和1955年为此上诉国际法院，但智利、阿根廷认为南极半岛是他们的领土，拒绝由国际法院审理。美国自30年代末开始，为对南极提出领土要求作准备 。1939年罗斯福总统即明确指示美国当时进行南极考察的人员在南极多设置一些美国标记物。伯德在其第三次考察时在无人要求的伯德地（玛丽·伯德地）两侧各建了一个站。美国在 1945～1947年间进行了代号为跃进的大规模考察，并在1948年邀请英、法、挪威、澳大利亚、智利、新西兰、阿根廷7国共同商讨南极问题，提出由 8 国共管或由联合国托管。但与会国中有6国坚持其对南极的领土要求 ，会议无任何结果。 上述8国的活动引起了苏联的关注。1950年6月8日苏联照会上述8国政府，表示不承认任何国家以任何方式对南极提出的领土要求，不承认在没有苏联参加的情况下做出有关南极的任何决定。前苏的坚决立场以及俄早期探险者（如别林斯高晋）在南极考察史中所占有的地位，使美、英等8国不得不重新考虑解决南极领土纷争的途径。 到20世纪40年代，英国、法国、挪威、澳大利亚、智利、阿根廷、新西兰 7 国已对83％的南极大陆提出了领土要求。其中澳大利亚、法国、新西兰、挪威4国互相承认各自的领土要求，阿根廷、智利、英国3国要求的领土互相重叠，各方坚持各自的主权要求，互不承认他方的主权要求；美、苏不承认任何国家对南极的领土要求，同时保留他们自己对南极提出领土要求的权利。由于对领土要求的纷争，致使南极大陆成了多种矛盾的焦点。这些矛盾的存在与发展，在客观上需要制定一个多边条约以缓解各种矛盾与纷争。1959年12月1日，阿根廷、澳大利亚、比利时、智利、法国、日本、新西兰、挪威、南非、英国、美国、苏联12国的代表在华盛顿签署了《南极条约》。 《南极条约》 南极条约体系 《南极条约》的主要内容为：禁止在条约区从事任何带有军事性质的活动 ， 南极只用于和平目的；冻结对南极任何形式的领土要求；鼓励在南极科学考察中的国际合作；各协商国都有权到其他协商国的南极考察站上视察；协商国决策重大事务的实施主要靠每年一次的南极条约的例会和各协商国对南极的自由视察权。中国于1985年5月9日加入南极条约组织，同年10月被接纳为协商国。《南极条约》有40个成员国，其中26国为协商国，14国为非协商国。 继《南极条约》之后，协商国又于1964、1972、1980年先后签订了《保护南极动植物议定措施》、《南极海豹保护公约》和《南极生物资源保护公约》 ；1988年6月通过了《南极矿物资源活动管理公约》；1991年10月在马德里通过了《南极环境保护议定书》。《南极条约》和上述公约以及历次协商国通过140余项建议措施，统称为南极条约体系。1991年在马德里通过的《南极条约环境保护议定书》中第25条规定，自议定书生效之日起50年内禁止在南极进行矿物资源活动，从而确保了南极大陆未来50年的和平与安宁，为全面保护南极、科学地认识南极奠定了基石。 1991年10月在波恩举行的第十六届南极条约协商国会议通过了13项建议备忘录并发表了南极条约30周年宣言，重申《南极条约》的宗旨与原则：“为了全人类的利益，南极应永远专用于和平目的，不应成为国际纷争的场所与目标。”宣言建议1991～2000年为国际南极合作10年。 南极条约组织非联合国机构。在1983年的联合国大会上马来西亚等国提出将南极问题列入联大议程，主张南极是全人类的共同遗产应由联合国管理，但遭到南极条约协商国的一致抵制，因此尽管南极问题自1983年以后一直列在联大议程内，但未取得进展。 南极研究科学委员会简称SCAR，隶属国际科联，是专门组织、协调南极科学研究的国际性学术组织。SCAR每两年召开一次会议，以促进南极条约协商国成员国之间及其他国际学术组织的交流与合作。大会期间还举行生物、地质、冰川、气象、高空大气物理、大地测量与制图、人体生理医学等学科的分组学术讨论会和南大洋生态与生物资源、海豹等方面的专家组会议。SCAR 自1958年成立至今召开过21次会议。1991年SCAR在德国不来梅举行大规模的南极科学大会，回顾、总结了30年来在南极研究方面各重大学科取得的进展。SCAR最重大的研究课题是“南极在全球地圈-生物圈计划中的作用”。SCAR 现有21个正式成员国和7个非正式成员国。中国在1986 年6月举行的第十九届会议上被接纳为正式成员，并参加了第十九届以后的各届会议。中国也成立了与 国际SCAR相对应的中国南极研究科学委员会，统一协调全国的南极科学研究工作。中国科学院院士孙鸿烈为该委员会主任。中国极地研究所所长董兆乾在第二十一届SCAR会议上当选为副主席。 中国从1980年起派科学家到外国南极考察站同外国科学家一起开展南极科学研究，并于1985年2月20日在南设得兰群岛的乔治王岛上（南纬62°13′、西经58°58′）建成了中国第一个南极考察站——长城站；后又在1988年底选定南极大陆另一端的达拉斯曼地区南纬69°22′、东经 76°22′处建立了中国第二个南极考察站——中山站。从 1984年起，中国已多次派出了考察队 。自第五次起 ，考察队兵分两路，一路奔向长城站，一路奔向中山站。中国在两个站上进行的主要考察项目有：地球物理、生物、地质、冰川、环境、气象、高空大气物理、人体生理医学等。1989年7月27日，由中、法、美、苏、英、日6国各1名队员组成的1990年国际横穿南极探险队从南极半岛出发，沿着过南极点、东方站最后到达和平站的最长路线，开始了仅靠狗拉雪橇和滑雪板横穿南极大陆的征途，历时219天，行程5986千米，1989年12月11日经过南极点时曾发表《南极宣言》，1990年3月3日国际横穿南极探险队胜利到达终点冰天雪地
