有两点：1.they thought是插入语,去掉不影响句子结构正确.
2.whichever way 与whoever,whatever (+名词）一样,可以引导【名词性】从句,=（任一）名词+that-定语从句.
我觉得这个句子应该是 in whichever way(that) they thought would be most attractive to audiences.
这是一个常见的错误.就象很多同学认为：I give it to whoever I think arrives first.
中,whoever应用whomever 一样,认为whoever是作I think 的宾语的,该用whomever.
上面的省略的that你认为是they thought的宾语,那would be ...的主语呢,不会还是that吧?那不是不可以省略了吗?
只有将they thought当插入语,划掉,你才能理解.
当然,这里,如果不是whichever way 而是the way的话,后面是定语从句,则从句缺乏主语,这个that是不可以省略的：in the way that would be most attractive to audiences.
