This essay will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of students living at home with families and studying at school on weekdays with reference to lost families, sociality, peer pressure and no flexibility.
The most important advantage of pupils living at home and studying at school on weekdays is that they will not miss their families. Family is an essential part of children’s life, and they need to communicate with their parents. In boarding schools, for example, separation from parents may result in emotional turmoil among sensitive pupils. Even though their teachers can take good care of them, most pupils prefer their parents’ care.
Another argument about pupils living at home and going to school on weekdays is that parents can teach their children how to socialise. In fact, education for pupuls is not only about learning fact and figures, but also about learning how to survive socially. At home, for example, parents provide their children with plenty of chances to learn social skills that they cannot learn from classroom. In boarding schools, the chance will be even less for them.
These arguments show the strong advantages of pupils attending conventional schools, but there are still some disadvantages. And the stronger argument is that peer pressure. In conventional schools students may have some social pressure from classmates, and this type of pressure may lead to negative behaviour such as smoking, drinking alcohol and fighting. If parents choose home schooling for their children, the possibility of peer pressure and its consequence is nearly zero.
Another argument about pupils attending conventional schools is that it lacks of flexibility. In conventional schools, adolescents need to set aside some time for class every day. If parents choose distance education for their children, high school children can use modern media to study at home, and arrange their time for homework at their convenience.
To sum up, the advantages of pupils attending conventional schools outweigh the disadvantages of it. Conventional schools make teenagers have more time to enjoy their friendship and family love, and learn more social skills, although they also make students feel pressure and not enough time.
