Speech act of request has all the time been one of the most important research fields of pragmatics and sociolinguistics.Scholars at home and abroad have made great achievements in this research field.Speech act refers to the act performed by means of utterances.Speech acts are the basic units of human verbal communication. However,as people from different cultural back grounds and use different languages, communication will undoubtedly be affected, and misunderstanding or conflicts could be caused, especially when people make requests. So the study of speech act of request strategy is necessary.Based on the theories of the speech act and some traditional views of request, this paper elaborates the structure and the classification of request. On the basis of analyzing the request strategy and affecting factor, contrast is made in the speech act of request in Chinese and English.
From what we mentioned above,we can find that cross-cultural communication is more frequent and wider in the range than anytime in the past in the human’s history. So the study of the cross-cultural communication will doubtlessly be helpful to improve mutual understanding between people from different cultures. And as one of the most effective ways to study human beings’ communication behavior, speech act theory got more and more attention from the scholars both at home and abroad.Among the speech acts, the speech act of request is employed most frequently.
Requests in many languages are made in consideration of cultural factors.Chinese culture differs with English culture in a wide range since culture is influenced by environmental adaptations and history factors.Geert Hofstede identified four dimensions of national culture that result from collectively held assumptions about the way of life, behavior, social interaction, description. They are respectively power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualistic and masculine.
As English and Chinese are two different languages in different cultures. The close relationship between communication and culture, between language and culture shows us the importance of culture. The main cultural patterns have strong influences on how people conduct the speech act of request in English and Chinese. The differences from the power-orientated social relationship of culture also have a strong influence on the selecting strategies of speech act of request.
Through the comparative study of speech act if request in Chinese and in English,we can find out that although there are many requests in common, there exists significant differences. When making a request,Chinese people pay much attention to the social status of both the requester and the hearer as well as the relationship between these two interlocutors. They choose different addressing terms to different addresees while native English speakers use very few ones. What’s more,Chinese thought pattern is different from western thought pattern. The former is a circular one while the latter is a linear one.Consequently,Chinese people use different organizations from western people in making requests.

It’s really true what people say about English politeness: i
It’s really true what people say about English politeness: it’s everywhere. When squeezing past someone in a narrow aisle, people say “sorry”. When getting off a bus, English passengers say “thank you” rather than the driver. In Germany, people would never dream of doing these things. After all, squeezing past others is sometimes unavoidable, and the bus driver is only doing his job. I used to think the same way, without questioning it, until I started travelling to the British Isles and came to appreciate some more polite ways of interacting (交往) with people.
People thank each other everywhere in England, all the time. When people buy something in a shop, customer and retail assistant in most cases thank each other twice or more. In Germany, it would be exceptional to hear more than one thank you in such a conversation. British students thank their lecturers when leaving the room. English employers thank their employees for doing their jobs, as opposite to Germans, who would normally think that paying their workers money is already enough.
Another thing I observed during my stay was that English people rarely criticize others. Even when I was working and mistakes were pointed out to me, my employers emphasized (强调) several times but none of their explanations were intended as criticism. It has been my impression that by avoiding criticism, English people are making an effort to make others feel comfortable. This also is showed in other ways. British men still open doors for women, and British men are more likely to treat women to a meal than German men. However, I do need to point out here that this applies to English men a bit more than it would to Scottish men! Yes, the latter (后者) are a bit tightfisted.

Passage TwoNot only politeness but an attitude
Passage Two
Not only politeness but an attitude of reverence is demanded in church. If one is not familiar with the service,he may maintain a respectful silence, standing when others stand, sitting when they sit,and bowing during prayer. On entering a church an usher will probably show you to a seat and it is polite to take the one indicated by him, though it is quite proper to whisper a suggestion that one does not want to sit too far to the front,or that one is a little deaf and would like to sit well forward.
It is usual for anyone attending church to take some money along for the offering,as it is a regular part of every church service and is used for the work of the church.Good clothes, but never evening clothes, are worn to a church service. In some churches it is improper for a lady not to wear a hat.It is impolite and disrespectful to talk or whisper,to eat or chew anything,or to enter or leave during the service. One must come on time and stay till the service is over. When the service is over, one passes quietly out of the church with the other worshippers. In many churches it is considered irreverent to talk before one has reached the entrance hall.
Sometimes the “Lord’s Supper” or “Communion” is observed at the end of the service. This is a special service for the fellowship of Christians, and one is not supposed to participate unless he is a Christian. He may sit quietly and observe the service if he wishes.
6.If you don’t know the procedures quite well, you’d better ___________.
A.sit there silently all the time B.stand by and observe the others
C.do as the others do D.sit in the front seats
7.On entering a church,you ___________.
A.can speak loudly to your friends
B.may whisper to the usher where you prefer to be seated
C.must follow the usher’s direction
D.should always try to sit near to the front
8.It is desirable to go to a church wearing ___________.
A.your best clothes B.your evening clothes
C.clothes neat and formal D.a hat
9.Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A.You’d take some money with you to the church.
B.Women are allowed to wear a hat in some churches.
C.You cannot be late for the service.
D.You may start talking when the service is over.
10.At the end of the service,__________ can take part in the “Communion” .
A.only Christians B.all the people present
C.only Americans D.all the natives

Politeness(礼貌) nowadays in some big cities seems to disappear. It is nothing for a big, strong schoolboy to push an elderly woman aside in the rush for the empty seat on the bus, much less stand up and offer his seat to her.
This question of giving up seats in buses is much argued(争论) by young men,who say that, since women have demanded equality(平等),they no longer need to be treated with politeness and that those who go out to work should take their turn in daily life like anyone else.Women have never said to be as strong as men.Even if it is not agreed, however, that young men should stand up for young women, the fact remains(保持) that politeness should be shown to the old and the sick. Are you really so lost to all ideals(理想) of unselfishness that we can sit there reading the paper or a book, saying to ourselves “First come, first served”,while a grey – haired woman,a mother with a young child stands?Yet this is all too often seen.
If cities are to remain pleasant places to live in at all, however,it seems necessary, not only that communications(沟通) in transport should be improved, but also that communication between people should be kept polite. All over cities,it seems that people are too tired and too rushed to be polite.Shop assistants won’t trouble to assist, taxi drivers shout at each other as they drive dangerously round corners, minibuses often suddenly stop at any places at any time, and so on and so on.It seems to us that it is up to the young to do our small part to stop such behaviors(行为).
49.The word “they” in paragraph 2 refers to _____.
A.schoolboys x05x05B.women x05x05C.young men x05x05D.elderly people
50.The main idea of the passage is that _____.
A.politeness is more important in big cities for they are good places to live in
B.the young should take care of the old when they get on buses
C.to build a polite world, the young should do something to help
D.the communications between people is as important as that in transport
51.The writer thinks _____.
A.politeness in some places has been improved
B.men and women should not be equal in daily life
C.the bad behaviors happen between the young and old
D.“First come, first served” is not a good idea on buses

However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous.Typical examples are the driver who waves a child crossing the street at a wrong place into the path of oncoming cars that may not be able to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to dross the road wherever and whenever they want to.It always amazes me that the highways are not covered with the dead bodies of these grannies.
An experienced driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if drivers learnt to correctly join in traffic stream without causing total blockages that give rise to unpleasant feelings.Unfortunately, modern drivers can’t even learn to drive, let along master the roadmanship.Years ago, experts warned us that the fast increase of the car ownership would demand more give – and – take from all road users. It is high time for all of us to take this message to heart.
