D

When Thomas Edison was sixteen,he became a telegraph operator. He worked at night; during the day he read books and made experiments. The result was that he got very tired.Sometimes he slept at night, and so the other operators got angry. When they sent a message,Edison did not answer. He was asleep. They soon found a way to make sure that he was awake. They told him to telegraph them the letter A every hour; and in order to do this,he had to stay awake.
Edison did not like this at all,he needed more sleep. So he invented a gadget which sent the letter A very hour by itself. It never failed. The other operators received the letter every hour.
They could not believe that Edison had changed his habits. One night they went quietly to his room and looked in.he was sleeping deeply, and his gadget was sending the letter

In the nineteenth century, the invention of the telegraph
In the nineteenth century, the invention of the telegraph made it possible to send noises, signals, and even music over wires from one place to another. However, the human voice had never traveled this way. Many inventors tried to find a way to send a voice over wires, and in 1876 some of their efforts were crowned with success. Two American inventors,Alexander Graham Bell and Elisha Gray, succeeded at almost the same time. The United States Supreme Court finally had to decide which of the two was the first inventor of the telephone. The Court decided in Bell's favor.
Born in Edinburg,Scotland,Bell grew up in a family that was very interested in teaching people to speak. His grandfather had been an actor who left the theatre to teach elocution; his father was a teacher who helped deaf-mutes learn how to speak.
However, probably none of the later inventions gave Bell the same feeling of triumph as he had on the day when he spilled some acid from his batteries. It was after he had worked for months to find ways to send something more than metallic twangs over the wires.Thinking Watson, his helper, was in the next room,Bell called,"Mr.Watson, come here.I want you." Watson was not in the next room.He was down in his laboratory, next to the receiver.

Telephone, television, radio, and telegraph all help people communicate with each other. Because of these devices, ideas and news of events spread quickly all over the world. For example, within seconds, people can know the results of an election in another country. An international football match comes into the homes of everyone with a television set.News of a disaster such as an earthquake or a flood can bring help from distant countries within hours, help is on the way. Because of modern technology like the satellites that travel around the world, information travels fast.
How has this speed of communication changed the world? To many people, the world has become smaller. Of course this does not mean that the world is actually physically smaller. It means that the world seems smaller.
Two hundred years ago, communication between the continents took a long time. All news was carried on ships that took weeks or even months to cross the ocean. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries,it took six weeks for news from Europe to reach America. This time difference influenced people's actions. For example, one battle, or fight, in the War of 1812 between England and the United States could have been avoided. A peace agreement had already been signed. Peace was made in England, but the news of peace took six weeks to reach America. During these six weeks, the large and serious Battle of New Orleans was fought. Many people lost their lives after a peace treaty had been signed. They would not have died if news had come in time.In the past, communication took much time than it does now.?
