London, Reuters---What could annoy teenagers enough to make
London, Reuters---What could annoy teenagers enough to make them stop hanging out with friends and go home?
No, it’s not a visit from their mothers, and not a threat to take away their cellphones or pocket money.
It’s high-frequency noise. The UK police recently agreed to use a device (装置) called the Sonic Teenager Deterrent. It sends out a sound that makes teenagers become so impatient and angry that they have to cover their ears tightly and walk away.
The sound is at extreme high-pitch that can be heard by those under 20. The body’s natural ability to detect some wave bands (波段) decreases almost entirely after 20, so few adults can hear the sounds. The black-box device, nicknamed the Mosquito because of its sound, can be fixed to the outside walls of shops, offices and homes. It sounds to youngsters like a crazy insect or a badly played violin. But it causes no physical damage.
A number of police forces and councils have given permission to use the system and want to install it at trouble spots.
Staffordshire Police Inspector Amanda Davies, who has given the device to shopkeepers in the Moorlands area, said," It is controlled by the shopkeepers--if they can see through their window that there is a problem, they turn the device on for a while until the group has run away."

A.young people often suffer from pains in ears
B.shopkeepers are troubled by noisy insects
C.high-frequency noise is beyond the listening ability of people over 20
D.the police invented a new device to deal with teenagers
小题3: The purpose of the writer to write the passage is ________.
A.to advertise a new hi-tech device
B.to tell the reader a piece of news
C.to sell the device to shopkeepers
D.to inform the public as the spokesman of the police
小题4:Who will welcome the device most?
A.Shopkeepers. B.The police. C.Young people. D.The producer.

GUATEMALA CITY (Reuters) – A fish that lives in mangrove swa

GUATEMALA CITY (Reuters) – A fish that lives in mangrove swamps(红树沼泽) across the Americas can live out of water for months at a time, similar to how animals adapted(适应) to land millions of years ago, a new study shows.
The Magrove Rivulus, a type of small killifish, lives in small pools of water in a certain type of empty nut or even old beer cans in the mangrove swamps of Belize, the United States and Brazil. When their living place dries up, they live on the land in logs(圆木), said Scott Taylor, a researcher at the Brevard Endangered Lands Program in Florida.
The fish, whose scientific name is Rivulus marmoratus, can grow as large as three inches. They group together in logs and breathe air through their skin until they can find water again.
The new scientific discovery came after a trip to Belize.
“We kicked over a log and the fish just came crowding out,” Taylor told Reuters in neighboring Guatgemala by telephone. He said he will make his study on the fish known to the public in an American magazine early next year.
In lab tests, Taylor said he found the fish can live up to 66 days out of water without eating.
Some other fish can live out of water for a short period of time. The walking catfish found in Southeast Asia can stay on land for hours at time, while lungfish found in Australia, Africa and South America can live out of water, but only in an inactive state. But no other known fish can be out of water as long as the Mangrove Rivulus and remain active, according to Patricia Wright, a biologist at Canada’s University of Guelph.
Further studies of the fish may tell how animals changed over time.
“These animals live in conditions similar to those that existed millions of years ago, when animals began making the transition(过渡) from water onto land,” Wright said.
1. The Mangrove Rivulus is a type of fish that _______.
A. likes eating nuts
B. prefers living in dry places
C. is the longest living fish on earth
D. can stay alive for two months out of water
2. Who will write up a report on Mangrove Rivulus?
A. Patricia Wright.
B. Scott Taylor.
C. Scientists from Belize.
D. Researchers in Guatemala.
3. According to the text, lungfish can ________.
A. breathe through its skin
B. move freely on dry land
C. remain alive out of water
D. be as active on land as in water
4. What can we say about the discovery of Mangrove Rivulus?
A. It was made quite by accident.
B. It was helped by Patricia Wright.
C. It was based on a lab test of sea life.
D. It was supported by an American magazine.

MONTREAL (Reuters) -Crossing the US-Canada border (边界) to go to church on a Sunday cost
a US citizen $10,000 for breaking Washington's strict new security (安全) rules.
The expensive trip to church was a surprise for Richard Albert, who lives right on the Canadian border. Like the other half-dozen people of Township 15, crossing the border is a daily occurrence for Albert.
The nearby Quebec village of St. Pamphile is where they shop, eat and go to church.
There are many such situations in these areas along the largely unguarded 5, 530-mile border between Canada and the US, which in some cases actually runs down the middle of streets or through buildings.
As a result, Albert says he did not expect any problems three weeks ago when he returned home to
the US after attending church in Canada, as usual. The US customs(海关) station in this area is closed
on Sundays, so he just drove around the locked gate, as he had done every weekend since the gate
appeared last May, following a tightening of border security. Two days later, Albert was told to go to the
customs office, where an officer told him he had been caught on camera crossing the border illegally.
Ottawa has given out special passes to some 300 US citizens in that area so they can enter the country when Canadian customs stations are closed, but the US stopped a similar program last May. That forces
the people to a 200-mile detour along hilly roads to get home through another border checkpoint.
Albert has requested that the customs office change their decisions on the fine, but he has not attended a Sunday church since. "I feel like I'm living in a prison," he said.
1. We learn from the text that Richard Albert is .
A. an American living in Township 15
B. a Canadian living in a Quebec village
C. a Canadian working in a customs station
D. an American working in a Canadian church
2. Albert was fined because he .
A. failed to obey traffic rules
B. broke the American security rules
C. worked in St. Pamphile without a pass
D. damaged the gate of the customs office
3. The underlined word "detour" in Paragraph 5 means .
A. a drive through the town
B. a race across the fields
C. a roundabout way of traveling
D. a journey in the mountain area
4. What would be the best title for the text?
A. A Cross-country Trip
B. A Special Border Pass
C. An Unguarded Border
D. An Expensive Church Visit

New York (Reuters) --- Television can act like a painkiller when it comes to children and is more effective than a mother’s comforting, according to a small Italian study.
The University of Siena study, published in Archives of Disease in Childhood, was based on 69 children aged 7 to 12 who were divided into three groups to have blood taken.
One group was given no distraction while the blood was being taken. Meantime mothers of children in the second group attempted to distract the youngsters by talking to them, soothing(安慰), and/or caressing them.
In the third group, the children were allowed to watch television cartoons while the procedure was being carried out.
After the samples were taken, the children and their mothers rated their pain scores.
The children recording the highest pain scores were in the group getting no distraction. These scores were about three times as high as those recorded by children allowed to watch the cartoons.
Children comforted by their mothers recorded middling scores.
On average, the mothers rated pain scores higher than the children but they also recorded the lowest pain scores for children who had been allowed to watch television.
“The higher pain level reported by children during mothers’ efforts at distraction shows the difficulty mothers have in interacting positively at a difficult moment in their children’s life,” the researchers said in their report.
They added that watching television also seemed to increase children’s pain tolerance(容忍力).

(Reuters)—A Malaysia Airlines flight carrying 227
(Reuters)—A Malaysia Airlines flight carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew was presumed to have crashed off the Vietnamese coast on Saturday, and European officials said two people on board were using false identities.
There were no reports of bad weather and no sign of why the Boeing 777-200ER would have vanished from radar screens about an hour after it took off from Kuala Lumpur for Beijing.
“We are not ruling out any possibilities,” Malaysia Airlines CEO Ahmad Jauhari Yahya told a news conference.
By the early hours of Sunday, there were no confirmed signs of the plane or any wreckage, well over 24 hours after it went missing. Operations will continue through the night, officials said.
There were no indications of sabotage (蓄意破坏) nor claims of an attack. But the passenger list issued by the airline included the names of two Europeans—Austrian Christian Kozel and Italian Luigi Maraldi—who, according to their foreign ministries, were not in fact on the plane.
A foreign ministry spokesman in Vienna said: “Our embassy got the information that there was an Austrian on board. That was the passenger list from Malaysia Airlines. Our system came back with a note that this is a stolen passport.”
Austrian police had found the man safe at home. The passport was stolen two years ago while he was travelling in Thailand, the spokesman said.
The foreign ministry in Rome said no Italian was on the plane either, despite the inclusion of Maraldi’s name on the list. His mother, Renata Lucchi, told Reuters his passport was lost, presumed stolen, in Thailand in 2013.
U.S. and European security officials said that there was no proof of any terrorist link and there could be other explanations for the use of stolen passports.

LONDON(Reuters)-Organic fruit, delivered right to the doorst

LONDON(Reuters)-Organic fruit, delivered right to the doorstep. That is what Gabriel Gold prefers, and he is willing to pay for it. If this is not possible, the 26-year-old computer technician will spend the extra money at the supermarket to buy organic food.
"Organic produce is always better," Gold said. "The food is free of pesticides(农药), and you are generally supporting family farms instead of large farms. And more often than not it is locally(本地)grown and seasonal, so it is more tasty. "Gold is one of a growing number of shoppers buying into the organic trend, and supermarkets across Britain are counting on more like him as they grow their organic food business. But how many shoppers really know what they are getting, and why are they willing to pay a higher price for organic produce? Market research shows that Gold and others who buy organic food can generally give clear reasons for their preferences-but their knowledge of organic food is far from complete. For example, small amounts of pesticides can be used on organic products. And about three quarters of organic food in Britain is not local but imported(进口)to meet growing demand. "The demand for organic food is increasing by about one third every year, so it is a very fast-growing market," said Sue Flock, a specialist in this line of business.
60. More and more people in Britain are buying organic food because ____.
  A. they are getting richer
  B. they can get the food anywhere
  C. they consider the food free of pollution
  D. they like home-grown fruit
61.Which of the following statements is true to the facts about most organic produce sold in Britain?
  A. It grows indoors all year round.
  B. It is produced outside Britain.
  C. It is grown on family farms.
  D. It is produced on large farms.
62.What is the meaning of "the organic trend" as the words are used in the text?
  A. growing interest in organic food
  B. better quality of organic food
  C. rising market for organic food
  D. higher prices of organic food
63.What is the best title for this news story?
  A. Organic food-healthy, or just for the wealthy?
  B. The making of organic food in Britain
  C. Organic food-to import or not?
D. Good qualities of organic food

Organic food—healthy,or just for the wealthy?
GUATEMALA CITY (Reuters) – A fish that lives in mangrove swa
GUATEMALA CITY (Reuters) – A fish that lives in mangrove swamps(红树沼泽)across the Americas can live out of water for months at a time, similar to how animals adapted(适应)to land millions of years ago, a new study shows.
The Magrove Rivulus, a type of small killifish, lives in small pools of water in a certain type of empty nut or even old beer cans in the mangrove swamps of Belize, the United States and Brazil. When their living place dries up, they live on the land in logs(圆木),said Scott Taylor, a researcher at the Brevard Endangered Lands Program in Florida.
The fish, whose scientific name is Rivulus marmoratus, can grow as large as three inches. They group together in logs and breathe air through their skin until they can find water again.
The new scientific discovery came after a trip to Belize.“We kicked over a log and the fish just came crowding out,” Taylor told Reuters in neighboring Guatgemala by telephone.
“These animals live in conditions similar to those that existed millions of years ago, when animals began making the transition(过渡)from water onto land,” Wright said.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Three Hollywood craft unions on Monday said they reached a landmark deal with Touchstone Television setting pay and working conditions for the making of mini-episodes of the hit ABC series "Lost" to be shown on mobile telephones.
The making of the new programming, known in the trade as "mobisodes," is a medium so far not covered by labor agreements.
The Directors Guild of America, the Writers Guild and the Screen Actors Guild said the agreement not only lays down conditions for producing the new programming, but lays down a framework that could cover other technological platforms.

根据the fish can live up to 66 days out of water without eating可得出答案。
根据文章倒数第三段第二行while lungfish found in Australia, Africa and South America can live out of water,可得出答案。
The new scientific discovery came after a trip to Belize等可推断答案。

ZURICH,Sept 18 (Reuters) - Orders to the Swiss industry,a
leading indicator of industrial production, rose 11.7 percent in
the second quarter from a year earlier, the Swiss Federal
Statistics Office said on Tuesday.
Industrial production rose 9.8 percent against the previous
year, while orders on hand increased 22.3 percent.
ECONOMISTS' COMMENTS:
HOLGER SCHMIEDING - BANK OF AMERICA
"Industrial output (is) very strong at 9.8 percent year over
year and Swiss orders also very, very strong. That was the time
when the Swiss economy and the euro zone economy were really on
fire and it shows. It will have not impact however on the SNB
deliberations who now focus on very different things."
"What we can see from the orders is that it is likely the
economy will still have a lot of momentum in the third quarter,
working off these orders, but what comes after that is anybody's
guess at the moment."
"The next rate decision is likely to be there is no further
change in the rate for at least quite a while now."
