Next week in Atlantic city,New Jersey,fifty-one beautiful women will step out onto a stage.They will be in long dresses and in swimsuit s.They will sing,or play a musical instrument,or tell jokes.And they will talk a little about themselves.Then one will be named “Miss America”
“Beauty Contests”--like the competitions--come in all shapes and sizes.Some competitions are organized by nationwide companies that do nothing else.Others are organized by businesses in small towns,or by industries in big cities.
Some competitions seek only beautiful women.Others say they seek women who are intelligent and talented,as well.
Every year in the United States,women of all ages compete in more than seven-hundred-thousand of these so-called beauty contests.They compete for money,which some use for a university education and for other prizes.
