实际上,只要是出现quantities of就一定要用复数的.提问者说的应是对的.

与 quantity 的形式一致.
可以修饰不可数名词,He lost a great quantity of blood.他失了大量的血.
也可以修饰可数名词.Quantities of books were on the desk.在桌上有很多很多书.

有很大争议的关于"a quantity of" 和"quantities of"的主谓一致的问题,关于 a quantity of /quantities of + n.+谓语 中的谓语的单复数形式说法有三：
A.a quantity of /quantities of + n.+谓语,其中谓语的单复数形式与quantity的单复数形式保持一致,eg:
Quantities of nuts were on the table.
A quantity of nuts was on the table.
B.对于a quantity of + n.+谓语 中的谓语的单复数形式与a lot of 相同,即遵循意义一致原则；
而对于quantities of + n.+谓语 中的谓语一定用复数形式,eg:

a lot of 、lots of、plenty of、quantities of、a large quantity of 的意思都是大量、许多,所以它们加可数名词的话只加复数,谓语动词用复数,例：A lot of students like playing computer.
如果后接不可数名词的话,谓语动词用单数,例：A lot of water is poured into the large bowl.
PS：因为这几个词组用法差不多,所以我只用了a lot of举例,其它几个皆是此用法.
