 三效催化剂是指内燃机的燃料在燃烧过程中,因多方面原因,造成燃烧不完全,其排气成份有二氧化碳(CO2)、水蒸汽(H2O)、一氧化碳(CO)、碳氢化合物(HC)、氮氧化合物(NOX)、铅化合物、硫化合物等.其中一氧化碳(CO)、碳氢化合物(HC)、氮氧化合物(NOX)是造成环境污染的三种主要气态污染物.
为了消除上述污染物对环境和人体的危害,目前最有效的治理方法是在发动机排气系统中加装催化转化器,对汽车尾气在排放前进行催化转化,其基本原理是通过催化剂的作用,把CO、HC、NOX 分别氧化、还原为对人体健康无害的二氧化碳(CO2)、氮气(N2)和水蒸气(H2O),在转化过程中,如果催化剂能同时对CO、HC、NOx三种有害物起催化净化作用,这种催化剂就称为三效催化剂(TWC),而把只能转化CO、HC 的催化剂称为二效催化剂(或称氧化型催化剂).三效催化剂也称作三元催化剂,二效催化剂也称作二元催化剂.
