Xu Xiake (1586-1641), whose given name was "Hongzu" and who styled himself as "Zhenzhi", "Xiake" and "Xiayi", was a Chinese writer, geographer, explorer and traveller. Born into a scholarly family in Jiangyin city, Jiangsu province, Xu was influenced by his father, who loved to travel and disdained contact with influential people. Instead, he just liked to travel everywhere, to enjoy the beautiful landscape and natural splendour. Influenced by his father, Xu Xiake loved to read history, geography and books about adventure, travelling and so on. These books made him early love for the motherland"s magnificent rivers and mountains, and made him determined to travel over mountains and rivers.In the case of no government funding, Xu Xiake went to sixteen provinces and traveled more than half a China. He went to places as far east as Putuo Mountain in Zhejiang province, as far west as Tengchong in Yunnan province, as far south as Nanning in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and as far north as Pan Mountain in Hebei province.
