新专辑的命名也沿用了Michael Jackson以往专辑的做法——天王喜欢用专辑里的一首歌曲名来命名该张专辑，而且名字往往是一个单词，短小精悍且不失前卫性，这种做法从《Thriller》就开始，而“XSCAPE”正是新专辑中收录的一首歌曲。

　Taylor Swift和她号称正式踏入流行界的新专辑《1989》在这个秋冬之际不断地曝光在全世界的视野之下。她的销量一路飘红差点破了小甜甜第二张专辑的女歌手专辑首周销量记录，她第二周的销量比排行榜前15名加起来都高，她退出了Spotify引起了乐坛盈利模式的大讨论，她被Diplo讽刺，她似乎又和前男友复合了……这一切的一切也几乎让我们忘记了，如何来审视她这一张音乐作品？音乐评论自然是件公说公有理婆说婆有理的事，但从国外媒体的音乐评论上，我们自然也能看出乐评界对她这一张转型之作的评价究竟如何。在国外评论综合网站Metacritic上，目前统计了28家媒体给《1989》的打分，目前这张专辑的媒体综评是76分，有20家媒体打出了70分以上的 积极分数。对比前作《Red》和《Speak Now》 的77分，这个成绩还算是稳健。毕竟，总是给Taylor打出A-（计为91分）高分的欧美乐评泰斗Robert Christgau 还没来得及为这篇文章给出评价呢。在可预见的将来，这张专辑很有可能成为Taylor Swift媒体综评最高的音乐作品。而连续三张专辑都得到75以上的高分，这对于一位欧美年轻女歌手来说是相当罕有的。毕竟，无论是Katy Perry 、Rihanna还是Lady Gaga，她们的最新音乐作品都只得到了61分的综合评价，差一点就要掉下及格线。那么接下来，让我们看看这些媒体都是怎么说的吧。首先是给出了四颗星高分评价的《滚石》杂志。《滚石》大力赞赏了Taylor Swift此次风格的转变，认为她玩起80年代的synth-pop的成果令人百听不厌。而曲风的转变之下，依然保存着那些听起来依旧是Taylor Swift风格的炽热情感与热烈狂野。有趣的是，《滚石》在这篇评论中总是将Taylor Swift与Prince（流行天王，一度和Michael Jackson齐名）进行比较。《滚石》认为，Taylor Swift上一张专辑——《Red》包罗万象，宛如史诗，是一张堪比《Purple Rain》 （Prince最经典专辑之一）的作品，而在《1989》中，她专注地展现自己音色的一面的做法更是非常Prince作风。总而言之，《滚石》高度评价了Taylor Swift此次风格的转变，既肯定了其音乐中标志性的感人特质依旧鲜活，又认为此次风格的转变虽然极端，但也将会带她进入新的阶段。而《Entertainment Weekly》（以下简称EW）的态度则要保守一些，B的评价不能算高也不能算低。EW认为，Taylor Swift在此次向流行迈进的奥林匹克中剑指金牌，而她的最终成绩至少也有银牌的表现。EW顺便也探讨了一下Taylor Swift的流行属性。毕竟流行音乐是一个用其所非是来定义的东西，我们可以说流行不是乡村，不是说唱，不是摇滚，却也很难界定流行究竟是什么。一方面，Taylor Swift做的音乐不是以上的任何一种，另一方面，她做的也不是百分之百的流行音乐，她太独特了。令人出乎意料的是，一向下手仁慈的All Music Guide（以下简称AMG）则仅仅给了60分。AMG谴责Taylor Swift的这张唱片只是对短暂而透明的当代流行的隔靴搔痒，似乎她的个人魅力和对流行旋律与抒情歌曲的掌控力在此只是为了给梦想的生活方式来上一段闪闪发光的配乐。但大体而言，目前为止，媒体们对这张专辑的反应大多还是积极的。对她音乐上的负面评价主要也源于对她流行化的不适应。例如Los Angeles Times认为她这张抓耳、平顺的流行唱片苍白而无营养，例如New York Daily News受不了她在这张专辑中没完没了的重复旋律。但许多媒体则认为她在流行的外表下，依旧是我们的时代中最生动最有特点的词曲作者。笔者乱弹实际上，笔者认为，Taylor Swift此次“进军流行”并不是一件突然的事情。甚至在音乐元素的尝试上还不及上一张专辑《Red》中尝试Dubstep（《I Knew You Were Trouble》）大胆。而比起当今大多数流行专辑的做法，这张《1989》没有说唱歌手助阵，没有舞池金曲，有的只是她用创作撑起来的一张致敬80年代流行乐的唱片。而她这样的宣称毋宁说也是在向那些坚守门户之见的乐迷划清界限——“老娘就是要做些不一样的东西出来”。而在这所谓的转变中，不变的是她赖以立身的细腻歌词与流行旋律。虽然《1989》中的曲子大多有太多重复的段落，不及《Red》中的主打歌们那样令人一听难忘，但包裹在Synth-pop的外壳中依旧绚丽 多彩。而诸如“the rest of the world was black and white, but we were in screaming color”，“The drought was the very worst, when the flowers that we"d grown together died of thirst”这样细腻而美丽的歌词更是令人陶醉在她讲的一个个动人故事当中。说来有趣，Taylor Swift首专中唱着《Tim Mcgraw》走红，当大家满心以为她的目标是成为Loretta Lynn这样的乡村传奇，或是Joni Mitchell这样的唱作神话，可她近年来艺术人格的逐渐丰满、音乐版图的逐渐扩大却让她逐渐拥有了成为一位流行天后的气魄。甚至有人怀疑她说不定能接下Madonna的班。是啊，眼看着Lady Gaga唱着逼格满满的Artpop而销量下滑走上了Rock（or jazz?）Queen的道路，Katy Perry在流水线流行乐中越陷越深，Britney驻唱上瘾誓做舞曲界的Celine Dion，年轻女歌手中我们似乎只剩下制作人最爱的Rihanna可以指望了。但她近年来作品的声势比起Taylor Swift那可是远远不及。除了歌唱技巧还有待提高，音色处理稍显单调，其余作为一个流行歌手，真没什么好黑的了。
