Life is a journey. At the end of every worldly journey, death awaits. That is a certainty. The ending will be the same for everyone who walks this earth. What matters is the course chosen on the voyage through life. The vast sea represents life"s journey, with its ebbs, flows, and storms that must be navigated. In Hemingway"s portrait of the world, death is inevitable, but the finest men will nonetheless refuse to give in to its power. In both the sea and in life, there are a number of possibilities that lie hidden from the common eye; some are gifts to be treasured and some are problems to be defeated. Neither will be found unless man embarks upon the journey. If man is lucky enough to discover a treasure he must fight until death to retain it; if man is unlucky enough to discover an evil lurking underneath the surface of the sea, he must fight it bravely and nobly until the end. In either case, it is the struggle that is all- important, and a man obtains the status of hero if he battles the sea (life) with grace under pressure. The only way to obtain the status of hero is to set sail on the uncertain sea of life.

纵式结构　　海明威生活阅历很广，他晚年长期居住在古巴海滨，非常热爱海，热爱捕鱼，热爱那里的渔民，因而非常熟悉职业渔夫的生活。他为了让充分表达这份感情，在创作这篇小说的时候进行了精心的剪裁。他曾这样说：“《老人与海》本来可以写成一部一千多页的巨著，可以将渔村的每一个人都写进去，把他们如何谋生、出生、受教育和养儿育女的过程全部都写进去。”① 但他没有这样写，他采取了纵式结构的方式，即在众多渔夫中老人作为他小说中的主人公桑提亚哥，选择了非常可爱的孩子曼诺林做老人的伙伴，选择了辽阔深远的大海作为老人捕鱼的典型环境，选择了一生中难得遇见的大马林鱼作为老人的对手，把这一系列情节的发展按自然的时空顺序安排在两天时间内进行，这样剪裁实际上有许多东西并没有被真正剪裁掉，而是让读者自己去完成，达到“一石多鸟”的艺术效果，寓意深厚。一方面集中体现了他作品的主题：“人并不是生来要给打败的，你尽可以把它消灭掉，可就是打不败他。”这是他笔下“硬汉子”形象所反映的“重压下的优雅风度”。另一方面，很好的体现了他创作的冰山原则，让读者领会到八分之一的故事描绘所暗示的潜台词原来海明威所歌颂的桑提亚哥的精神是一种人类精神，人为之人，其意义就在于具有顽强的意志力，勇于拚杀，蔑视痛苦和死亡。“人们处处都在为幸福，为值得人们追求的生活而斗争。他们不一定能够胜利，他们必须经历不幸和挫折，但是正象这个老人一样：一个有能力取得日常功绩和知道如何夺取胜利的人，在遭到最严重的挫折之后是不会失望的，他不悲观失望，而是继续斗争。”②　　2、 轮辐式的布局　　小说的全部时间非常紧凑，前后只有四天：出海的前一天，一老人从海上归来为引子，让周围的人物一个个出场，交代了他们与老人之间的关系：一个热爱他，跟他在一起学习钓鱼的孩子曼诺林；一对非常自私的父母；一群尊敬他，但永远不能理解他的打渔人；一个关心他的酒店老板。老人就生活在这样的人物群体中，相比之下，他与众人有着明显的不同，他很乐观，心胸开阔，是个经验丰富、充满信心、勤劳勇敢、富于冒险、热爱生活的纯朴的古巴渔民。整个布局就是这样，围绕老人展开了一幅广阔的生活图画――这里有陆地也有海洋、有蓝天也有白天、有老人也有小孩、有孤独也有欢聚、有斗争也有和平、有穷有富、有爱有恨。从这样的布局中，我们不仅看到了老人的生活环境，而且充分把握了老人的性格特征。因为每次联系、交锋和冲突，都是性格特征的重要表现和充分展示，这就为塑造老人这一真实的、感人的、鲜活的形象起了巨大的作用，同时，这种轮辐式结构还能产生线索清晰明了、中心集中突出、故事简洁明快的效果。　　3、 缓急相间的节奏感　　海明威在论述节奏时曾这样说：“书启动时比较慢，可是逐渐加快节奏，快得让人受不了，我总是让情绪高涨到让读者难以忍受，然后稳定下来，免得还要给他们准备氧气棚”③　　这篇小说给人的节奏感就是这样，故事开始给我们交代老人与周围人的关系时，娓娓道来，速度比较缓慢，随着老人航海的进程，速度也逐渐加快着，当老人与马林鱼、鲨鱼正面交锋时，速度之快达到了极点。特别是鱼在不断的挣扎，起伏波动，鲨鱼在猛烈的进攻，老人很疲惫的情况下，读者情绪高涨，紧紧的替老人捏一把汗。等到鱼略有平静，老人就趁机喘几口气放松一下，搏斗再一开始，又紧张起来，直到鱼彻底被赶走，老人空舟而归时，一切才又慢慢恢复了平静。这种起伏式的节奏，突出了主人公的艰难境遇，增强了作品的艺术感染力，起到了渲染气氛的作用。　　二、 艺术手法　　海明威在评价他的《老人与海》时说：“……这不是一篇短篇小说，也不是一篇中篇小说。”④ 言下之意是一部长篇小说,是一部巨著,这就是说它的内容是很丰富的.为了充分的表达作品的内容,海明威在做《老人与海》的艺术处理时,除了做到准确、鲜明、生动外, 还特别讲求丰富，他用那繁丰的艺术手法建造了一座美丽的百花园，栽种着各种名花异葩，让我们尽情饱览这一切。　　1、 完美的照应。《老人与海》非常讲究照应的完美。老人独自一人住在海边一座简陋的茅棚里，第85天的黎明他从这里扛着工具由孩子送他出海；两天后的黎明，他独自驾着小船又回到了海边。扛着工具又进了小茅屋，孩子第一个来看他，整个故事就是这样，在时间、地点、人物及道具方面形成了照应关系，有头有尾，产生一种完满的美感。这种首尾完全相呼应的照应并不是简单的重复，他引导人们去思考：一去一回都是黎明，地点依然是小茅棚，人物依旧是老人和孩子，用具还是那些捕鱼的工具，看起来似乎没有什么惊奇的变化，但这里已经蕴藏了不同的内容：出海前老人精神抖擞，充满信心；孩子为老人担心、祈祷、祝福；老人的工具是完好的；小茅棚在老人的心目中并不是至关重要的。归来后，老人已经疲惫不堪，面临着精神和肉体上的全面崩溃；孩子为老人的受伤而哭泣，为老人的归来而欢乐，为将来能继续跟老人学习本领而庆幸；老人用作战斗武器的捕鱼工具已残缺不全；小茅屋此时成了老人衷心向往的处所。可见前后已发生了本质上的巨大变化。使用这样的照应头绪清晰，有助于对作品进行全面集中的把握，整体感很强。　　2、 引人的悬念。海明威在《老人与海》中一开始就设了两个悬念：老人一连84天一条鱼也没捉到，他准备第85天继续捕鱼，他很背运（孩子的父母这样看他），那么，他能否捕倒一条大鱼？老人在感到他的力气可能不支的情况下，认为自己有信心有诀窍，认为像他这样一个“古怪”的老头子会做好一切的，那么，他有什么样的信心和诀窍？他的“古怪”又表现在哪里呢？这是读者迫切想要知道的，这股巨大的吸引力牢牢牵着你去寻找你所想知道的一切，最后读完作品就会得到比较圆满的答案：老人第85天捕到了一条特大鱼，不过最后又失去了；他的信心就是战胜一切困难，取得最后的胜利；他的诀窍就是对付鱼的一切有利办法；他的“古怪”表现在他那坚毅不可战胜的倔强性格上，悬念随着情节的发展消失了，我们对作品的总体精神也得以了解，这就使悬念设置的艺术效果。　　3、 巧妙的暗示。在展现老人的形象时，作者就用了极为简练的白描手法，对老人的外形作了大致勾勒：“老头儿后颈上凝聚了深刻的皱纹，显得又瘦又憔悴。两边脸上长着褐色的疙瘩，那是太阳在热带海面上的反光晒成的肉瘤。疙瘩顺着脸的两边蔓延下去。因为老在用绳拉大鱼的缘故，两只手都留下了皱痕很深的伤疤，但是没有一块疤是新的, 那些疤痕年深日久,变得象没有鱼的沙漠里腐蚀的地方一样了。”“他身上的每一部分都显得老迈，除了那一双眼睛。那双眼啊，跟海水一样蓝，是愉快的，毫不沮丧的。”这就是老人的青春之貌。书中虽然没有写出老件轻时的快乐生活，但我们依然可以想象得出，这在描绘老人屋内陈设时已作暗示“……在用带有硬纤维质的‘海鸟类"的叶子按平了交叠着砌成的褐色的墙上，有一幅彩色的圣心节图，还有一幅柯布雷圣母图，这都是他老婆的遣物。过去墙上曾经悬挂一幅他老婆的彩色照像，他看见了就觉得凄凉，因此他把它拿下了，放在屋角架上他的一件干净衬衫下面。”这就暗示给我们老人过去的一切：他曾有一个有美丽漂亮的妻子，他的妻子信仰宗教，他们彼此相亲相爱，那样幸福和美满，也许生活还很浪漫。但不幸的是他的妻子过早地离开了他，什么原因呢？书中写到老人的日常用品时说：除了一张订，一张饭桌，一把椅子外，就剩一条旧军毯了。旧军毯是战争的产物，这就使人想到在那残酷的战争岁月，老人年轻时可能去打过仗，参加过战争，这也许是战争给他的纪念品，他的幸福生活也许是因为战争而被葬送了。尽管书中没有正面描写爱情、战争，但我们可以想到这些，这不有不说是暗示的作用。　　4、 At one level it is the tale of a man and a fish, at another, a story of man versus nature, at yet another, the story of the culture of manhood, courage, bravery in the face of existence, and at yet another a history of what life was like when individuals were more the central actors on the human stage and not groups or organizations. At the most basic level the very elderly fisherman, Santiago, goes out in his small fishing boat after 84 days without hooking a decent fish. He goes far out, and hooks a gigantic 18 foot long sword fish. The battle then begins, and the fish drags the small boat and Santiago far out to sea. For two days they battle, and Santiago wins that battle, but then loses the great fish on the way home to the scavenger sharks who find him easy prey. Hemingway celebrates the courage and raw guts of this old man, even recounting a time in Casablanca when he had spent an entire day in an arm wrestling match with a much larger man in a seaside tavern. Hemingway celebrates a concept of humans as beings who go it alone, fierce, brave, courageous without even thinking about it, oozing strength from the nature of the best of the species. Sometimes I think about making an "okay-so-does-this-mean-i"m-stupid-or-something?" shelf, but my ideological opposition to the idea has overridden that impulse every time.... so far.
