达林顿晶体管是由两个n-p-n晶体管组合而成的一种复合晶体管（见图1）；其中第一个BJT（T1）是CC组态（射极跟随器），第二个BJT（T2）是CE组态。从功能上来说，该达林顿晶体管实际上它也就等效于一个CE组态的n-p-n晶体管（极性与T2管相同）。因为作为射极跟随器的T1和发射极接地的T2这两个晶体管都具有很大的电流增益，因此达林顿晶体管的总电流增益也就更大（总增益等于T1和T2的电流增益的乘积）。达林顿晶体管的输入电阻是由较高的T1的输入电阻与其后面的折合电阻串联而成的，故达林顿晶体管的输入电阻也很高。正因为达林顿晶体管具有很大的电流增益和很高的输入电阻，所以它在IC中得到了广泛的应用。但是，达林顿晶体管也有若干不足之处。其一是输出电阻很低（因为射极跟随器T1的输出电阻很低，故复合管的输出电阻比单个晶体管的还要低）；其二是跨导很小，这是由于其输入电阻很高，以致输入电压的变化难以引起输出电流发生较大变化的缘故；其三是达林顿晶体管的频率特性较差，因为其中T1的集电结势垒电容是一个Miller电容的缘故。其四是多采用了一个晶体管（两个晶体管起着一个晶体管的作用），这在IC中即增加了所占用芯片的面积；然而，构成达林顿管的两个晶体管可以放置在一个隔离区中（因为它们的集电极是连接在一起的，电位相同），这对于集成又是有利的。
