首先不知道这个单词是不是楼主新学的。如果是,那么概率不算太低。以前读到一个认知语言学的论文,专门讨论“在学习某个新单词后突然会发现这个词会在短期内反复出现”这一现象。原因比较复杂,等我找到原文再给详细答复。如果是很久以前学到的,概率其实也也没有想象中的低。在特定的某个领域里,某些在整体语言里的低频词反而会成为高频词。据我初步分析,copycat作为常见的用作翻译中国文化里“山寨”的单词,在中国外语媒体和一些门户英文媒体的使用频率还算挺高的,另外在欧美影视剧尤其是美国影视剧里出现频率也不低,不仅仅指中国的山寨,还泛指模仿者,在犯罪剧里对特定作案手段的模仿者往往称之为copycat。
